You can change an external drive from NTFS to exFAT with Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility, but this is a format—not a data-preserving conversion. Formatting erases the target volume. Copy files you want to keep to a separate storage location, verify the copies, then format the drive and restore your files.
What changes when you format NTFS as exFAT?
Formatting replaces the volume’s file-system structure. It does not convert NTFS to exFAT while keeping the files in place. Apple lists exFAT as a Windows-compatible format for external disks used with Mac and Windows; however, compatibility with older computers, cameras, consoles, media players, routers, and other devices depends on the device. Check the intended host’s documentation if you need the drive to work with a particular device.

Apple says Disk Utility does not support formatting a drive as NTFS, and a Mac may be able to read an NTFS drive but not write to it. See Apple’s guidance on saving files to an external drive.
Before you begin
- Identify the correct drive. Check its name and capacity in the operating system before formatting. On a Mac, select the external device in Finder and choose Get Info to check its format, as described in Apple’s external-drive guidance.
- Back up wanted files elsewhere. Copy them to a separate drive or another storage location, then verify that the copies open. The backup must not be on the volume you are about to format. Apple warns that formatting erases files in Disk Utility’s Windows-format instructions; Microsoft gives the same warning for formatting a volume in Disk Management.
- Confirm the drive is connected and recognized. Do not proceed if you cannot confidently identify the target volume.
- Check for device-specific requirements. A device you plan to use may require a particular partition scheme or may not support exFAT. Consult its documentation before erasing the drive.
Choose the route that matches the computer you can use
| Route | What the documented instructions cover | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| macOS Disk Utility | Apple documents selecting a disk, choosing a partition scheme and ExFAT, naming the volume, and erasing it. | Apple recommends ExFAT for disks over 32 GB in this guide; the advice is specific to its Disk Utility instructions. The scheme choices depend on whether you select the physical disk or a volume. |
| Windows Disk Management | Microsoft documents formatting an existing volume through Disk Management and warns that formatting destroys data. | The cited Microsoft guide does not enumerate the file-system choices in the format dialog. Choose exFAT only if the dialog offers it. |
Format the drive on a Mac
- Open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the external disk you intend to format for Windows use. Confirm that it is the right device before continuing; selecting the physical disk rather than a child volume affects which scheme options appear.
- Click Erase.
- In the dialog, choose a partition scheme and select ExFAT from the Format menu. Apple’s guide recommends ExFAT for a disk over 32 GB; for a disk of 32 GB or less, it suggests MS-DOS (FAT). This is Apple’s Disk Utility guidance, not a universal rule for all devices.
- Enter a volume name, then click Erase. Wait for the operation to finish and click Done.
Apple’s general initialization instructions identify GUID Partition Map as a scheme option when the physical device is selected at the top of the hierarchy. That does not establish it as mandatory for every use. Follow the target device’s requirements if it specifies a scheme. See Apple’s external-device initialization instructions and its Windows-format guide.

Format the drive in Windows 10 or 11
- Open Disk Management. For example, right-click Start and choose Disk Management, or search for Create and format hard disk partitions.
- Locate the external drive and identify the existing volume you intend to format. Check the disk and volume carefully; formatting the wrong volume destroys its data.
- Right-click the target volume and select Format.
- If the format dialog offers exFAT, choose it and proceed only after confirming that your backup is complete and the selected volume is correct. Microsoft’s cited instructions document the existing-volume format workflow but do not list the dialog’s file-system options.
- Wait for formatting to finish, then check that the volume is available and reports exFAT.
Microsoft distinguishes quick format from normal format: a quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume, while a normal format fully erases existing data. Quick format is not a secure-erasure method. See Microsoft’s Disk Management instructions.

- After the utility finishes, confirm that the volume mounts and that the operating system reports its format as exFAT.
- Copy files back from the separate backup only after you have confirmed that the newly formatted volume is the intended destination.
- Open a few restored files to verify they are accessible.
The cited format instructions explain how to erase and format a volume; they do not promise recovery if you format without a backup. If wanted files were not backed up, avoid writing more data to the drive and seek current recovery guidance. Microsoft cautions against creating a partition after data loss in its Disk Management documentation.
