NTFS stands for New Technology File System. It is the file system Windows uses to organize files, folders, and metadata on a storage volume—not a drive or a separate consumer product. Microsoft describes NTFS as the default file system for modern Windows-based operating systems.
What NTFS does
A file system defines how an operating system stores and retrieves data on a storage device. It organizes that data into files, directories, and volumes, and tracks information such as file names, sizes, timestamps, and permissions. Windows manages NTFS volumes and uses their file-system structures to locate and manage stored files. Microsoft’s overview of local file systems explains the role file systems play in organizing storage.

NTFS is commonly used for Windows system and data volumes because it supports Windows-oriented management and protection features. These include access-control lists (ACLs) for files and folders, encryption-related support, disk quotas, compression, rich metadata, and journaling. Those are capabilities the file system makes available; choosing NTFS does not by itself encrypt a drive or guarantee that data can always be recovered. Microsoft’s NTFS overview describes its features.

How NTFS keeps track of files
The Master File Table
The Master File Table (MFT) is a central NTFS structure. Microsoft says an NTFS volume has at least one MFT entry for every file, including the MFT itself. Information such as file size, timestamps, permissions, and content is stored in those entries or in the locations the entries describe. As files are added, the MFT grows. Deleted entries may be reused, but the space allocated to the MFT does not automatically shrink. See Microsoft’s explanation of the Master File Table.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Journaling and change tracking
NTFS maintains metadata journaling and a file-change log, features Microsoft lists in its comparison with exFAT, UDF, and FAT32. Journaling helps the file system manage metadata changes; it should not be confused with a backup or a promise that every kind of data loss can be undone. Microsoft’s file-system comparison lists these capabilities.
NTFS security and encryption
NTFS supports file and folder permissions through ACLs, which let Windows control access for users and groups. It also supports encryption-related functionality. These mechanisms must be configured and used appropriately: formatting a volume as NTFS does not automatically encrypt all its contents or prevent unauthorized access.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
BitLocker is a separate drive-encryption feature that works with NTFS. The distinction matters: NTFS provides file-system capabilities, while drive encryption requires a separately configured protection feature. Microsoft’s NTFS documentation describes the file-system features.

NTFS file and volume size limits
There is no single NTFS maximum that applies in every situation. Microsoft’s figures differ by Windows version, cluster size, whether the question is about one file or an entire volume, and sometimes by the application or service using the volume.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

- Volume size on newer Windows versions: Microsoft’s NTFS overview, updated June 18, 2025, says NTFS volumes can be as large as 8 petabytes (PB) on Windows 10 version 1709 and later, and Windows Server 2019 and later. The achievable limit depends on cluster size and other constraints.
- Volume size on earlier Windows versions: The same overview gives a maximum of 256 terabytes (TB).
- Cluster-size examples in Microsoft’s 2023 comparison: It lists 16 TB for a 4 KB cluster size and 256 TB for a 64 KB cluster size.
- Individual file size: Microsoft’s 2023 comparison lists the NTFS maximum as 264−1 bytes.
These are technical limits, not a guarantee that a given application, storage configuration, or workload can use a volume or file of that size. Microsoft notes, for example, that some Previous Versions or Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) configurations without a SAN or RAID enclosure have a 64 TB limit. Check the applicable Windows version, cluster size, and software constraints before planning around a maximum. Sources: Microsoft’s NTFS overview and its 2023 file-system comparison.
NTFS compared with other Windows file systems
The right file system depends on what must use the volume and which features matter. Microsoft’s comparison covers NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32; its table lists a 4 GiB maximum file size for FAT32. NTFS’s ACLs, encryption-related support, compression, quotas, and journaling can be useful for Windows-managed storage, while portability across devices may lead to a different choice. No format is best for every situation.

| File system | Useful distinction in Microsoft’s documentation | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| NTFS | Supports ACLs, encryption-related functionality, built-in compression, quotas, metadata journaling, and a file-change log. | Often appropriate for Windows system and data volumes where Windows management features are needed. |
| FAT32 | Microsoft’s comparison lists a maximum file size of 4 GiB. | Consider the file-size limit as well as which devices and operating systems need to read the volume. |
| exFAT | Included in Microsoft’s comparison of file-system functionality. | Compare device and operating-system support with the features required for the volume. |
| UDF | Included in Microsoft’s comparison of file-system functionality. | Check whether its support matches the storage use and devices involved. |
| ReFS | Microsoft documents features that overlap with NTFS as well as capabilities specific to each file system. | Some ReFS capabilities depend on Windows Server version or storage configuration; it differs from NTFS in areas such as bootability, removable-media support, quotas, and shrinking. |
The comparison is a feature guide, not a universal ranking. For ReFS deployments, check the relevant Microsoft ReFS overview and support details for the Windows Server version and storage configuration.
How to choose a file system
- Check compatibility: Identify the operating systems, devices, and removable-media readers that must access the volume.
- List required features: Determine whether permissions, encryption, compression, quotas, or journaling are needed.
- Separate file and volume needs: Check both the largest individual file and the planned volume size, using the applicable Windows version and cluster size.
- Account for the volume’s role: A bootable Windows volume, portable storage, and a server storage deployment can have different requirements.
- Verify application constraints: Software and storage configurations can impose lower limits than the file system’s technical maximum.
Use Microsoft’s file-system comparison for NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32, and consult the ReFS overview when evaluating ReFS.
