They are not equivalent products: Notion provides a workspace service, while Markdown is a text markup format. A move between them can involve more than converting files, especially when databases, linked assets, or formatting are involved.
What is the difference between Notion and Markdown?
Notion is a hosted workspace service, and Notion says workspace data is stored in its cloud. Markdown is a text format used to add structure—such as headings, lists, and code blocks—to text. Software that supports Markdown can read or edit those files, but the format itself does not provide a workspace, database views, or team workflows.

So the practical choice is not between two interchangeable apps. It is whether you want to organize and work inside Notion or keep content as files in tools that support the Markdown syntax you use.

| Decision | Notion-centered workflow | Markdown-centered workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What you use | A hosted workspace service. | Text files formatted with Markdown, used in compatible tools. |
| Portability | Notion supports workspace exports as HTML or Markdown, database exports as CSV, and exports of uploaded files. An export is not an instant restoration of the workspace. Notion’s backup guidance and export instructions describe the available routes and limits. | Markdown files can be moved among tools that support the syntax they contain. Tool-specific or advanced extensions may not work everywhere. |
| Databases | Notion documents CSV export for databases. CSV can carry tabular data, but it does not by itself recreate workspace behavior or database views. | Markdown is not a substitute for a database. A migration may require keeping tabular data separately and rebuilding features in the destination tool. |
| Import into Notion | Not applicable to content already in the workspace. | Notion accepts plain text and standard Markdown, including headings, lists, and code blocks. Anchor links and advanced or nonstandard extensions may not import cleanly. See Notion’s import guidance. |
| Migration effort | Content stays in the hosted workspace unless you export it. | Files can be staged and moved, but cleanup or rebuilding may be needed depending on the content and features used. |
Can you export Notion to Markdown?
Yes. Notion documents exporting pages as Markdown or HTML, databases as CSV, and uploaded files. These formats represent different parts of a workspace: Markdown or HTML for pages, CSV for database data, and separate files for uploads. Choose the formats that match what you need to keep rather than assuming one Markdown export captures every workspace feature.
#1 Best Overall
Notion warns that an export may omit pages the exporter cannot access and that an export cannot instantly recreate the workspace. Treat it as a way to obtain portable content and a backup, not as a guaranteed one-click clone or restore.
Notion’s backup guidance describes a staged removal of workspace-level PDF export through August 31, 2026, while retaining HTML, Markdown, and CSV workspace exports and individual-page PDF export. Because that date has passed, check the current export menu and live help page for the present options; do not assume PDF is available for a whole-workspace export.

Can you import Markdown into Notion?
Yes. Notion’s import documentation says it accepts standard Markdown and plain text, including common structures such as headings, lists, and code blocks. The documentation cautions that anchor links and advanced or nonstandard Markdown extensions may not import cleanly. Compatibility therefore depends partly on the syntax in your files.

An import that succeeds is not proof of a flawless round trip. If you later export the workspace again, the resulting files may not preserve every behavior or structure from the original workspace.

How to test a move before migrating everything
A small trial helps reveal whether the formats preserve the content you care about. This is a prudent check based on Notion’s documented export and import limits, not a guarantee that every feature will survive.
- Choose a representative page with the formatting and links you use, one database, and pages that include uploaded or linked assets.
- Export those items using the relevant page, database, and file options. Notion documents the available formats and export steps in its export instructions.
- Inspect the resulting Markdown, CSV, and files. Check whether page structure, table data, links, and assets are present in forms you can use.
- Import a sample Markdown file into Notion if that is part of your intended workflow. Compare the headings, lists, code blocks, anchors, and extensions against the original.
- Decide what needs manual cleanup or reconstruction before moving the rest of your content.
Which should you choose?
Choose a Notion-centered workflow if
- You specifically want to work inside Notion’s hosted workspace.
- The workspace organization and features you use matter more than having every item operate as a standalone text file.
- You have checked that the documented export formats and limits are acceptable for your backup or portability needs.
Choose Markdown-centered files if
- Direct access to text files is a priority.
- You want to move content among tools that support the Markdown syntax you use.
- You are comfortable selecting compatible software for editing, organizing, and any database-like needs; Markdown alone does not supply those workspace features.
For either route, the right decision depends on your content and workflow—not a claim that one option wins across collaboration, performance, privacy, price, or offline use. The official documentation cited here establishes import and export behavior, not a comprehensive head-to-head assessment of those qualities.
