Notification History is a feature (or feature-like behavior) that lets you review notifications you missed or cleared earlier, without having to wait for them to reappear. Depending on your device, it may be a true log you can browse, or it may simply mean your notifications remain accessible in Notification Center for a limited time.
Because the wording differs across operating systems, the real question is: how your platform stores recent notifications and how you can control what gets recorded. This guide covers the practical “how” on Windows, Samsung Android, macOS, and iPhone/iPad—plus what to do when nothing shows up.

What Notification History actually is
Notification History is the place where your system keeps a record of notifications from apps. In Windows 10/11, it’s a dedicated setting that stores a list of past notifications. On Samsung phones running One UI, “Notification history” similarly keeps a list. On macOS and iOS/iPadOS, you generally rely on Notification Center behavior (recent notifications you haven’t fully dismissed, and summary modes), which can feel similar but isn’t always a searchable log.

Where you can find Notification History (by device)
Use the section that matches your device. The menu names and exact paths vary by OS version and manufacturer.
Windows 11
Windows 11 stores notifications in a history list when the setting is enabled.
- Open Settings (press Win + I).
- Go to System → Notifications.
- Find Notification history and turn it On.
- To view it, click the Action Center / notification icon on the taskbar (or press Win + A), then open the notifications list.
- To clear, use the Clear all option (wording may vary) inside the notification panel.
Windows 10
Windows 10 also supports notification history via its Notifications & actions settings.
- Open Settings (press Win + I).
- Go to System → Notifications & actions.
- Under Notifications, find Show notification history and set it to On.
- Open the notification panel from the taskbar and scroll to review recent items.
- Use Clear all notifications to wipe the current list.
Samsung Android (One UI)
Samsung typically offers a dedicated toggle for Notification history in One UI, which you can browse and clear.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Look for Notification history and toggle it On.
- To view it, open Notification shade, then access the history option (some builds show a history link; others put it in Settings).
- To clear, use the Clear action in the history view.
Version note: menu labels can shift between One UI versions, but the path is usually Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings.
Android on Pixel/stock Android
On many Pixel devices and stock Android builds, there isn’t a universal, system-level “notification history log” toggle like Windows. What you can do depends on your Android version:
- Use the built-in notification shade and notification dots to revisit recent notifications.
- Rely on app-specific logs (for example, Gmail for email, WhatsApp for chat history, Microsoft Teams for missed calls/messages).
- If you need a true history, consider manufacturer-specific options (Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi models vary) or an accessibility-based notification logging tool that’s transparent about permissions.
Gotcha: third-party “notification history” apps can request broad accessibility access. Only install tools with clear reputations, and test with non-sensitive apps first.

macOS
macOS doesn’t always label a dedicated “Notification History” switch, but Notification Center acts like a review panel for recent notifications.
- Open Notification Center (click the date/time in the top-right menu bar).
- Review recent notifications by app.
- Control what appears via System Settings → Notifications.
- Use Focus rules (also in System Settings) to reduce noisy alerts when you don’t want them shown.
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
iOS/iPadOS generally uses Notification Center rather than a persistent history log. If you clear notifications, you typically can’t always reconstruct a full timeline.
- Open Notification Center by swiping down from the top of the screen (or right edge on models without a home button).
- Review recent notifications listed by app.
- For delayed grouping, enable Notification Summary at Settings → Notifications → Scheduled Summary.
- Set per-app options under Settings → Notifications → select the app and adjust how notifications appear.
History limit: iOS may not retain a long “log” the way Windows does, especially after you dismiss items.
How to use Notification History day-to-day
Once it’s enabled (where supported), the best way to use notification history is to turn it into a quick retrieval tool—not a junk drawer.

When something important doesn’t land (a meeting invite, a delivery update, a login alert), open the history panel and scan the app entries. On Windows, notification history is directly connected to the notifications list you normally see; on Samsung, it’s a dedicated history view; on macOS/iOS it’s Notification Center.
If your platform supports it, use search in the app itself too. Notification history tells you that an event happened; the app itself is where the full details usually live.
Adjust which apps appear in the history
Even when the history feature exists, you control what’s eligible via notification permissions per app.

- macOS: System Settings → Notifications is per app and can change styles (banners, alerts, sounds).

- Samsung: Settings → Notifications plus per-app settings control what gets recorded and shown.
Prevent sensitive notifications from showing
Notification history can reveal previews (names, emails, verification codes). If you share your device or leave it unattended, use privacy controls:
- On Windows, check the “hide content” style options inside Notifications settings.
- On macOS and iOS, look for “Show Previews” settings and set them to “When Unlocked” where available.
- On Samsung, review lock-screen and notification preview settings under Notifications.
Decide when to clear or archive
History isn’t meant to be indefinite. Clearing stale notifications keeps the list usable and reduces confusion when multiple apps use similar wording like “Update available.”
If you need to keep proof (for example, security alerts), take an action in the source app (export, screenshot, or open the message). The notification preview alone usually isn’t enough.
Troubleshooting: Notification History not showing
When notification history is empty or missing expected entries, the fix is almost always one of four things: history is disabled, Focus/Do Not Disturb is suppressing delivery, app notifications are blocked, or the OS is throttling the app.
Windows fixes
Enable the setting
In Windows 11: Settings → System → Notifications → Notification history = On. In Windows 10: Notifications & actions → Show notification history = On.
Check focus and Do Not Disturb
If you’re using Focus Assist (Windows 10) or Focus (Windows 11), it can suppress notifications or change how they display. Temporarily disable it to test.
Check notification permissions
Go back to Settings → Notifications and ensure the specific app is allowed. Also verify that you didn’t set “Banners” or “Show notifications” to Off for that app.
Restart the notification system
If the toggle is on but nothing appears, reboot the PC. For deeper debugging, you can sign out and back in as a quick sanity check.

Samsung Android fixes
Confirm the toggle is on
Make sure Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings → Notification history is enabled.
Verify app notification permissions
Go to Settings → Notifications and select the app. Ensure notifications are turned on, and that the app isn’t blocked by lock-screen or “Don’t show notifications” options.
Check battery optimization
Some battery modes delay background work, which delays notifications. Try temporarily setting the affected app to Unrestricted battery usage (wording varies) and test.
macOS fixes
Make sure notifications aren’t hidden
In System Settings → Notifications, verify each app is enabled. If notifications are configured as “None,” they won’t show in Notification Center.
Re-check notification delivery style
Banners/alerts can behave differently under Focus modes. If you rely on seeing items later in Notification Center, make sure Focus isn’t rerouting notifications in a way that prevents banners/alerts.

Check Notification Center behavior
If you cleared notifications, they may not reappear. Swipe down and review what’s currently listed, then confirm the app’s notification settings.
Confirm Notification Summary settings
If you enabled Scheduled Summary, you may not see notifications immediately. Check the schedule under Settings → Notifications → Scheduled Summary so you understand when items will arrive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every OS has a true “history log.” Windows and Samsung commonly provide a real history panel; iOS/macOS are more about Notification Center behavior.
- Confusing notification previews with full content. History previews are short; the app usually holds the complete record.
- Forgetting per-app settings. Enabling Notification History doesn’t override an app’s notification permission.
- Ignoring Focus/Do Not Disturb. Quiet modes can prevent notifications from arriving (or change how they’re stored).
- Using sensitive apps without privacy controls. If previews show on locked screens, switch previews to “When Unlocked.”
Notification History vs other features
If you’re trying to remember what you missed, you may not need a notification log at all—sometimes the app’s own record is better.

FAQs
Does Notification History keep notifications forever?
No. On Windows and Samsung, it’s typically a short retention list of recent notifications. On macOS/iOS, Notification Center is also time- and dismissal-dependent.
Recommended Free Tools
Why do I see some apps in history but not others?
Most often, that’s because the app’s notification permission is disabled or restricted. Check per-app settings under your OS Notifications menu.
Can Notification History capture notifications sent while the device is locked?
Often yes, but it depends on privacy and Focus/Do Not Disturb rules. If locked-screen notifications are disabled or previews are hidden, the history may show less detail or behave differently.
Will Notification History store verification codes (like 2FA)?
It may store a preview, but systems vary and privacy settings can hide the actual content. If you see partial previews, that’s usually intentional to protect sensitive data.
Is there a way to search Notification History?
Windows and Samsung generally show a list you can scroll. Deep search isn’t consistently available system-wide; if search is critical, use the source app’s logs (email, messaging, calendar) instead.
Bottom Line
Notification History is best understood as “where your device keeps a reviewable record of notifications.” Windows 10/11 and Samsung One UI commonly provide a true history panel, while macOS and iOS/iPadOS rely on Notification Center and summary modes with more limited retention.
Enable the setting (where available), confirm per-app notification permissions, and use privacy controls so missed notifications stay useful—not risky.
