There is no universal winner. Choose the Nothing Phone (4a) if a dedicated 3.5x optical periscope camera, 50 W wired charging, the Glyph Bar design and Nothing OS matter most. Choose the Google Pixel 9a if you want Qi wireless charging, an IP68 rating and the longer stated software-support commitment. The right value depends on your country, storage version, retailer warranty and current like-for-like prices.
The specifications and policies below are manufacturer-published; camera processing, battery life, gaming performance and long-term reliability still require independent testing.

Which phone has the better camera system?
On hardware versatility, the Nothing Phone (4a) has the clear advantage. Its three-camera arrangement includes a dedicated 50 MP optical-image-stabilized periscope camera with 3.5x optical zoom. Nothing also advertises an upper limit of 70x ultra zoom, plus a 50 MP OIS main camera and a 32 MP selfie camera. See the specifications on Nothing’s official Phone (4a) product page.
The Pixel 9a uses a simpler dual rear camera: a 48 MP wide camera with OIS and a 13 MP ultrawide. Google lists Super Res Zoom up to 8x and a 13 MP front camera in its official Pixel hardware specifications.
Choose Nothing for optical reach
A real periscope module gives the Phone (4a) a dedicated focal length for distant subjects. That is useful for framing signs, stage performances, travel details or portraits without relying entirely on digital enlargement. Optical zoom does not automatically mean better pictures in every situation, but it gives the camera system a capability the Pixel’s listed hardware does not provide.

The Pixel’s listed Super Res Zoom and Google’s computational-photography approach may appeal to buyers who prefer automated processing and a straightforward point-and-shoot workflow. The specifications alone cannot establish which phone has better skin tones, night images, moving-subject capture, HDR balance, shutter speed or video quality.
What the specifications cannot answer
- Neither manufacturer’s specification proves overall photo quality.
- A 70x or 8x maximum zoom figure does not tell you how usable images remain at that setting.
- Sensor tuning, lens quality, autofocus behavior and software processing need controlled comparisons or independent reviews.
- Selfie resolution is not a guarantee of better faces, exposure or video.
Camera decision: buy the Nothing Phone (4a) when a dedicated telephoto view is central to how you shoot. Consider the Pixel 9a when you value Google’s camera processing and do not need a dedicated long-range lens. Do not treat either as the objectively “best camera” without test results for your priorities.

Battery life and charging: faster wires or wireless convenience?
Nothing lists a 5,080 mAh battery for most markets and a 5,400 mAh version for India, with 50 W wired charging. Google lists a typical 5,100 mAh battery for the Pixel 9a, fast charging and Qi-certified wireless charging. The capacities are close on paper, while the charging experiences are distinctly different.
Why the capacity numbers do not settle battery life
Battery capacity is only one input. Screen brightness, modem behavior, processor efficiency, camera use, gaming, signal strength and software settings can change endurance substantially. Nothing publishes usage-duration claims for the Phone (4a), while Google describes the Pixel 9a as providing 30-plus hours under its stated usage framing and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Those claims use different methods and should not be converted into a head-to-head runtime result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPick Nothing for the advertised wired rate
With a stated 50 W wired charging capability, the Phone (4a) is aimed at people who top up from a wall charger, power bank or car adapter and want the highest advertised wired rate between these two phones. Actual charging speed can depend on the charger, cable, temperature, battery level and regional accessory bundle; verify what is included where you buy.
Pick Pixel for Qi wireless charging
Qi support lets the Pixel 9a charge on compatible pads and stands, which can be more convenient at a desk, bedside table or in a vehicle. No directly comparable wired-wattage figure for the Pixel is stated in the specifications, so do not infer that it charges faster or slower from the battery capacities alone.
Charging decision: prioritize the Nothing Phone (4a) if fast wired top-ups are your routine. Prioritize the Pixel 9a if placing the phone on a Qi pad is worth more to you than a higher advertised wired rate.

Software and update support
Nothing says the Phone (4a) runs Android 16 and will receive three years of OS updates plus six years of security updates. Google’s policy promises seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 9a, counted from the date the device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. Google also says Pixel Drops may be included during that support period. Read the policy details at Google’s Pixel software-update page.
The starting date matters
Google’s seven-year period does not begin on your personal purchase date. A phone bought months after launch has fewer remaining years than a launch-day purchase. Check the first US Google Store availability date and the current support status when you buy, especially if you are purchasing old stock.
How to weigh the policies
- Long-term ownership: the Pixel’s stated seven-year OS-and-security commitment is longer than Nothing’s three OS and six security years.
- Feature updates: Pixel Drops may add features during Google’s support window, but the policy does not guarantee that every future feature will work on every model.
- Nothing’s schedule: three OS years may be sufficient if you replace phones regularly, while six security years still provides a longer security runway than the OS period.
- Regional details: support terms can interact with launch timing and market availability, so retain your purchase documentation and verify the local listing.
Support decision: the Pixel 9a is the safer choice for buyers who plan to keep one phone for many years and value the longest published update commitment.
Durability: IP68 versus IP64
Google lists an IP68 rating for the Pixel 9a. Nothing lists IP64 for the Phone (4a) and says it tested the phone under 25 cm of water for up to 20 minutes. These are not equivalent claims.
What the ratings mean for normal use
IP64 indicates protection against dust ingress and water splashes from specific directions; it is not a promise of submersion resistance. IP68 represents a higher level of tested dust protection and resistance to immersion under the conditions defined for the product. The exact laboratory depth and duration behind an IP rating are not stated here, so do not translate either rating into a guaranteed depth or time in water.

- Tiny is epic - Use Macro Focus to reveal vivid color and striking contrast in photos and videos of the smallest details – like raindrops, flowers, or sprinkles.
What neither rating covers
- Do not intentionally submerge either phone or use it underwater for photographs.
- Water resistance can decline after drops, cracks, repairs, opened seals or normal wear.
- Liquid damage may not be covered by a standard warranty.
- Salt water, pool chemicals, steam and high-pressure jets are especially poor tests of a phone’s seals.
Durability decision: the Pixel 9a has the stronger published protection rating, but it is still a phone to keep dry whenever possible.
Display and everyday viewing
Nothing advertises a 1.5K flexible AMOLED panel with adaptive refresh from 30 to 120 Hz and up to 4,500 nits peak brightness. Google lists a 6.3-inch 1080 × 2424 pOLED display with a 60–120 Hz refresh range and up to 2,700 nits peak brightness.
Refresh-rate differences
The Nothing panel’s stated 30 Hz lower point could allow it to reduce refresh activity further for suitable content, while its 120 Hz ceiling targets smooth scrolling and animation. The Pixel’s 60–120 Hz range also covers the common smooth-display modes. The specifications do not establish how often either phone reaches its maximum rate, how each manages heat or battery, or whether every app supports adaptive behavior.
Brightness numbers need context
Nothing’s 4,500-nit figure is higher than Google’s 2,700-nit figure on paper, but peak-brightness protocols can differ by test window, content and measurement method. Treat both as manufacturer claims, not a controlled outdoor-readability ranking. In bright conditions, screen coating, automatic brightness behavior and the angle of the display can matter as much as the headline number.

- Choose Nothing if you value its higher stated resolution and a broader adaptive refresh range.
- Choose Pixel if a 6.3-inch panel and Google’s familiar pOLED presentation fit your size preference.
- Before buying, check a local store or return policy if color calibration, PWM behavior or viewing comfort is important; those characteristics are not established by the listed specifications.
Performance, security and software feel
Nothing names Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and UFS 3.1 storage for the Phone (4a). Google names its Tensor G4 platform and Titan M2 security coprocessor for the Pixel 9a. These component lists indicate different design priorities, but the available specifications do not provide comparable benchmark scores, sustained-gaming tests, thermal measurements or app-loading results.
What can be concluded safely
- The phones use different chip platforms, so benchmark results from one cannot be assumed for the other.
- Titan M2 is identified as a security coprocessor in Google’s specification; that does not quantify everyday speed.
- UFS 3.1 identifies the Nothing phone’s storage technology, but capacity, free space and software optimization also affect perceived responsiveness.
- Gaming performance depends on the game, graphics settings, temperature and frame-rate target; no verified comparative result is supplied here.
Interface choice is personal
Nothing’s decision framework highlights its Nothing OS interface and Glyph Bar design as reasons to choose the Phone (4a). Pixel buyers may prefer Google’s software approach and update cadence. Because interface preference depends on your existing apps, launcher habits, notifications and accessibility needs, try both interfaces or confirm the return terms before making a subjective choice.
Price, availability and what to verify before ordering
A price verdict cannot be made from the cited listings alone. The Nothing source is a UK product page, while the Google Store listing cited here is for Ireland; displayed amounts therefore are not like-for-like market prices. Regional taxes, storage tiers, promotions, stock and warranty terms can change the result.
| Check | Why it changes the decision | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Country and currency | Retail prices and included taxes differ by market | Use the official local store or an authorized retailer |
| Storage tier | A lower headline price may apply to a different capacity | Match RAM and storage, not just the model name |
| Promotion timing | Trade-in credits, gifts and temporary discounts can reverse value | Record the offer end date and eligibility conditions |
| Warranty and seller | Grey imports may have different support or incompatible accessories | Confirm local warranty, return window and repair route |
| Battery configuration | The Phone (4a) battery is listed as 5,400 mAh in India and 5,080 mAh in most markets | Check the regional specification before purchase |
| Carrier compatibility | Imported models may lack bands or features used by your carrier | Verify the exact regional model number and network bands |
| Charger and cable | Advertised charging rates may require suitable equipment | Check whether the needed charger is included or sold separately |
Use Nothing’s regional Phone (4a) listing and the Google Store Ireland Pixel 9a listing as starting points, then verify the current local pages immediately before checkout. The Ireland page’s stock and price are volatile, and the UK Nothing page does not establish pricing in other countries.
Which phone should you buy?
Buy the Nothing Phone (4a) when these priorities match you
- You want a dedicated 3.5x optical periscope camera for distant subjects.
- You prefer a higher advertised 50 W wired-charging rate.
- You like the Glyph Bar design and Nothing OS interface.
- You are comfortable with IP64 rather than IP68 protection.
- The local price is meaningfully lower for the same storage and warranty.
Buy the Google Pixel 9a when these priorities match you
- You want Qi-certified wireless charging.
- You prefer the published IP68 rating.
- You value Google’s listed camera features and computational-photography approach.
- You plan to keep the phone for many years and want seven years of stated OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability.
- The Pixel is competitively priced in your market after taxes, promotions and warranty differences.
When neither is an obvious choice
If your main concern is sustained gaming, exact camera quality, all-day battery endurance or long-term repairability, pause before deciding. The available specifications do not answer those questions. Look for independent tests that use the same scenes, brightness settings, games, network conditions and charging equipment, and check whether the tested regional model matches the one you can buy.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down your local prices for both phones with the same storage tier, taxes and warranty.
- Decide whether you will use a telephoto camera more often than a wireless charging pad.
- Check the exact regional battery capacity and model number, particularly for an India purchase of the Phone (4a).
- Confirm your carrier’s bands and eSIM or SIM requirements before ordering an imported device.
- Read the seller’s liquid-damage, repair and return terms; an IP rating is not a warranty against water damage.
- Check the Pixel’s support start point and calculate how many years remain from your intended purchase date.
- If camera quality or gaming is decisive, compare independent tests of both phones rather than relying on megapixels, zoom limits or processor names.
Bottom line
The Nothing Phone (4a) is the more distinctive hardware choice: its dedicated periscope camera and 50 W wired charging address needs the Pixel 9a does not match on the listed specifications. The Google Pixel 9a is the more reassuring long-term and durability choice, with Qi wireless charging, IP68 and a seven-year stated update policy. Check your market’s current like-for-like price before buying; that final comparison can outweigh the specification differences.
