What Nothing OS 4.0 beta added: optional lock screen ads
In Nothing OS 4.0 beta, the lock screen can display ad content through an optional setting. The key word is optional: the goal is to give you a control point rather than forcing ads to show unconditionally.

Where you’ll see it
Lock screen ads typically appear when your device is idle and the screen is on (e.g., when you lift to wake or when the display turns on at a scheduled time). Depending on your settings, it may show alongside existing lock screen elements such as weather, notifications, or personalization widgets.

What optional typically means in practice
On Android-based skins, “optional” usually means one of the following:
- A dedicated toggle in Settings that switches ad display on or off.
- Ads may be enabled by default for some users or regions, with a visible opt-out afterward.
- Ads appear only when other advertising-related permissions or personalization controls are allowed.
Because beta rollouts can be staged, the setting may show up at different times—or even under different wording—depending on your exact build and region.
Why this matters (privacy, battery, and UX)
Lock screen ads aren’t just a cosmetic change. They can influence how often your device refreshes lock screen content, and they can also increase the amount of advertising-related data flowing through the system.

Prerequisites before you change anything
Confirm you’re actually on Nothing OS 4.0 beta
Open Settings → scroll to About phone (or Device) and check your Software version. Verify it says Nothing OS 4.0 and that you’re enrolled in the beta track.
Backup and sanity checks
Before you toggle advertising or lock screen options, it’s smart to ensure your device is stable:
- Charge to at least 30% to avoid interrupted settings changes.
- Make sure you can still access Settings normally.
- If you’ve recently modified notification permissions, note which apps you changed.
How to check whether lock screen ads are enabled
Nothing UI variants and beta builds can move settings around. The fastest way to locate the correct switch is to use Settings search.

Use Settings search (works across UI variants)
- Open Settings.
- Tap the Search bar at the top.
- Type one of these queries (try multiple):
lock screen ads, ads, advertising, personalized ads, lock screen. - Select the result that matches lock screen content or advertising display.
- Check whether the switch is On or Off.
If the query returns no results, that doesn’t always mean the feature isn’t present—beta builds may use slightly different wording.
Manually check common locations
If search doesn’t work, check these typical areas in order:
- Open Settings → Personalization or Home & Lock screen.
- Look for Lock screen options.
- Scan for any items labeled Ads, Promotions, Sponsored content, or Recommendations.
- If you see Notifications or Lock screen notifications, check whether ads are grouped there instead of in lock screen display.
How to turn off lock screen ads (or minimize them)
Once you’ve found the correct toggle, disabling it should stop ad content from appearing on the lock screen.
Disable the ads toggle
- Go to Settings.
- Search for
lock screen ads(or your closest match). - Open the setting page.
- Flip the switch to Off.
- Wait a few seconds for the UI to apply changes.
- Lock the phone (press the power button) and check the next lock screen.
If the toggle immediately changes state but you still see ads, keep reading—rollout timing and caching can make it look like the setting didn’t apply.

Some betas offer partial controls, such as reducing the frequency or limiting personalization. If you see options like these, choose the most privacy-friendly ones available:
- Turn off Personalized or Interest-based advertising (if present).
- Disable any option labeled Promotional suggestions or Recommendations.
- If there’s a “show on lock screen” control for specific content sources, turn those off individually.
Even if you can’t find a single “lock screen ads” toggle, these related switches often reduce or eliminate sponsored content.
Verify the result immediately
After disabling:
- Lock the phone and view the lock screen without unlocking.
- If you use lift-to-wake, test both lift to wake and screen-on-from-button.
- If ads appear only after some time, leave the device idle for 5–15 minutes and re-check.
If you can’t find the toggle: troubleshooting
Beta software can be inconsistent across devices, and rollout behavior can change overnight. When the setting isn’t visible, use these checks in order.

Then re-run the Settings search queries above.
Region or account-based availability
Some features appear only in certain regions or for certain cohorts. If your device shows the lock screen ad content but you can’t find a toggle, check whether other ad-related settings exist:
- Search Settings for
adsandpersonalization. - Look for controls under Privacy or Ad preferences (if present).
If nothing appears, it may mean the toggle is being rolled out later for your device.
Software version mismatch
If your device is on the right major version but not the exact beta build expected, you may be missing the UI changes. Confirm:
- Settings → About phone → Build number and Version.
- Compare against the beta release notes (from your beta channel/app if available).
After updating to the newest beta build, the toggle is often added immediately.
Settings reset or default permissions
If you previously reset settings or changed privacy controls, the lock screen ad feature may depend on permissions or default ad IDs. Try:
- Go to Settings → Privacy (or Security & privacy).
- Search for
advertising,ad personalization, ortracking. - Ensure advertising-related personalization isn’t set to maximize tracking, where possible.
What data lock screen ads could involve (and what to check)
Exact mechanisms vary by implementation, but Android advertising systems commonly use device identifiers and user preference signals to tailor content. Your goal is to restrict personalization where you can.
Advertising ID and ad personalization
Check for these types of controls:
- A switch to disable ad personalization.
- Options to limit ads based on interests.
- Advertising ID (often under Privacy or Google-related settings, depending on your device build).
If you see ad personalization controls, setting them to “off” is usually the closest equivalent to “fewer targeted ads,” even if lock screen ads don’t have a dedicated toggle.

Notification and lock screen permissions

- Look for any category related to system promotions or a “lock screen” grouping.
- Disable notifications that you don’t recognize or that clearly map to sponsored content.
Even if the ad toggle is missing, notification controls can reduce what shows up on the lock screen.
Network controls (Wi‑Fi vs mobile)
If ads only appear when you’re online, you can reduce refresh frequency:
- Disable mobile data for system components if you know which one is responsible.
- Prefer Wi‑Fi for updates and keep mobile data restricted for background activities.
Be cautious: restricting background data can also slow notifications for legitimate apps.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the setting updates immediately. Some lock screen elements can be cached for a short window after you change toggles.
- Only checking one lock screen method. Test both button wake and lift-to-wake.
- Turning off notifications broadly. Doing so can hide important alerts. Target sponsored or unknown categories instead.
- Forgetting beta updates can revert toggles. Some beta builds reset preferences during major changes. Re-check after installing.
Alternatives if you still want better control
If the toggle isn’t present in your current beta build (or you want a more controlled lock screen), there are a few workable paths—each with trade-offs.
Use lock screen settings to hide extra content
Many Nothing OS lock screen screens let you control what shows besides the time/date. Look for options like:
- Lock screen widgets
- Lock screen notification style
- Weather or personalization modules
Even if ads persist somewhere, reducing visible widgets can keep the ad from competing visually.
Third-party lock screen apps (with caution)
Third-party lock screen tools may offer customization, but they can introduce their own privacy risks, battery drain, and notification conflicts. If you go this route:

FAQs about Nothing OS 4.0 lock screen ads
Is Nothing OS 4.0 lock screen ads really optional?
“Optional” should mean you can disable it via a dedicated toggle or related ad personalization controls. In beta rollouts, the exact control may appear at different times, which is why searching Settings for “ads” is the best first step.
Why do I still see ads after turning the toggle off?
Common causes are lock screen caching, staged rollout behavior, or you disabling a related control (like personalization) rather than the exact lock screen ads switch. Re-check Settings search results and test after a short idle period.
Will disabling lock screen ads affect app notifications?
Usually not. If you only change the lock screen ads toggle, notifications from apps should remain intact. Problems typically happen when users globally disable notifications or background permissions for system components.
Does changing region or language settings help?
Sometimes. If the feature is cohort-based or region-dependent, your ad toggle may appear only after the system recognizes your locale/account region. However, changing region just to find a toggle isn’t reliable and can create other issues.
How do I confirm the setting is applied correctly?
Lock the phone, wait for the next lock screen refresh, and observe. If possible, test both wake behaviors (power button and lift-to-wake). Then verify again after you install any new Nothing OS 4.0 beta updates.
Bottom Line
Nothing OS 4.0 beta’s optional lock screen ads are a small but noticeable change that’s worth controlling. Use Settings search for “lock screen ads” (and related terms) to find the exact toggle and disable it.
Quick Recap
If the toggle doesn’t show up, don’t assume your device won’t ever get it—verify your beta build, check for staged updates, and review ad personalization and lock screen-related permissions so you can reduce sponsored content immediately.
