Nothing Ear (3a) is a feature-rich pair of budget wireless earbuds with adjustable sound, improved noise cancelling over the earlier Ear (a), and unusual call and media capture tools. Its main compromises are a bass-heavy default sound and battery life that can fall well short of Nothing’s headline 42-hour claim, especially with ANC on. It is worth considering if you want sound customization and capture features; it is less compelling if long ANC playback or the strongest noise cancelling is your priority.
What the Nothing Ear (3a) offers
Nothing lists a 12 mm driver, active noise cancellation (ANC), call and media capture, and up to 42 hours of battery life with the charging case on its US product page. Treat 42 hours as the manufacturer’s headline claim, not a guaranteed listening result: independent reviewers report lower totals in their tests.

At the time the US page was accessed, it showed $79 with $99 crossed out. TechRadar reports launch pricing of $99 in the US, £99 in the UK, and AU$179 in Australia. Those are time- and region-specific figures, so check the current local listing before buying.
How does it sound?
Out of the box, the Ear (3a) leans heavily toward bass. RTINGS and TechRadar both describe the default tuning as very bass-heavy or overly bassy. WIRED, by contrast, notes good detail, solid bass extension, and an energetic presentation, while recommending adjustment through the app’s eight-band equalizer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: the default profile may suit listeners who like prominent low end, but the companion app’s detailed EQ gives you room to change the balance. If you prefer a more neutral sound, expect to spend time tuning it rather than assuming the factory setting will suit you.
How effective is the ANC?
Noise cancelling is a meaningful improvement over the older Ear (a), though that does not make the Ear (3a) a class leader. SoundGuys measured nearly 81% average noise reduction for the Ear (3a), compared with about 57% for the Ear (a), in its 2026 test. Those are SoundGuys’ results under its test conditions, not a promise for every fit, setting, or environment; it also notes that higher-frequency chatter can still get through.

RTINGS likewise describes the ANC as substantially improved over the Ear (a), but finds the Anker Soundcore Space A40 stronger at noise cancelling. If blocking as much noise as possible matters more than customization or capture tools, that comparison is worth weighing.

Published test results differ enough that there is no single independent runtime figure to rely on. WIRED reports six hours from the earbuds with ANC on and 25 hours total with the case; with ANC off, it reports 10 hours from the earbuds and 42 hours total. TechRadar reports 4.5 hours with ANC on and 18 hours including the case, and six hours from the earbuds or 25 hours total with ANC off. These are publication-specific results, not directly interchangeable measurements, and your volume and use can affect playback time.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The practical point is that the 42-hour figure is not a realistic expectation for every use pattern. If you typically keep ANC on, plan around the lower independent results rather than the case’s advertised maximum.
What do Audio Snapshot and call capture do?
Nothing promotes capture of calls and media as a feature. WIRED describes Audio Snapshot as fun and call recording as practically useful, noting that recordings can be exported. These tools may be a genuine differentiator if you have a clear use for them.

RTINGS’ comparison with the Anker Soundcore Space A40 highlights a choice between stronger ANC and longer battery life on one side, and more detailed EQ control and a slightly more stable in-ear fit on the other. RTINGS also notes wireless charging and an auto-off timer on the Space A40.

Nothing’s own flagship Ear (3) is another option if improved microphones and wireless charging matter more; RTINGS says the Ear (3a) has longer continuous battery life in its comparison. TechRadar also names Apple AirPods 4 and Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 as alternatives, but the reviewed sources do not provide a controlled comparison across all of these models. Compare the features you will actually use—especially ANC, battery with your settings, fit, wireless charging, EQ, and call capture—rather than treating a list of alternatives as a ranking.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the Nothing Ear (3a)?
- Consider it if you want adjustable sound, bass-forward tuning, improved ANC over the Ear (a), or call and media capture.
- Look elsewhere if your priorities are the strongest ANC, longer tested battery life, or wireless charging; RTINGS’ Space A40 comparison points to advantages in those areas.
- Try to evaluate the fit if possible: RTINGS finds the Ear (3a) slightly more stable in-ear than the Space A40, but fit is personal and affects comfort and noise isolation.
