Notepad++ is a free, open-source text and source-code editor for Windows. It can replace basic Notepad tasks and help edit programming or natural-language text, but it is not a word processor for designing richly formatted documents.
What is Notepad++?
Notepad++ is a Windows application for editing plain text and source code. The project describes it as both a source-code editor and a Notepad replacement, with support for programming and natural languages. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), which makes it free and open source. See the official Notepad++ project repository for its description and license.

What is Notepad++ used for?
It is useful when you need to open, write, or change text without the page-design features of a word processor. Common tasks include editing source-code files, working with plain-text notes, and making changes to text written in a natural language. The project’s description covers programming and natural-language editing; it does not make Notepad++ a full document-layout application.

Is Notepad++ a word processor?
No. The Notepad++ community FAQ identifies it as a text editor, not a word processor. In practical terms, a text editor focuses on the text itself, while a word processor is typically chosen for rich formatting and document layout. Notepad++ is intended for editing text and code rather than preparing a formatted page. See the Notepad++ community FAQ.

Can Notepad++ use plugins or macros?
Yes. Notepad++ includes macro recording and playback, and plugins can add capabilities. Macros can automate some repeated editing actions, but not every command can be recorded: actions that require user input or otherwise fall outside the recorder’s support may need another approach. More involved automation can use plugins or external control, and plugin command IDs may be dynamic. The community automation guidance describes these options and limitations.
Which computers can run Notepad++?
Notepad++ is designed for the Microsoft Windows environment, not as a native macOS or Linux application. The project repository describes support for Windows systems that remain supported by Microsoft. Check the official project information for platform and compatibility details before installing; the repository also notes that releases have been GPG-signed since version 7.6.5, with a release key linked there.
