Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

That is a workflow distinction—not evidence that Goodnotes cannot search handwriting or annotate PDFs. Both apps advertise those capabilities, while Goodnotes separates its typing-focused Text Documents from handwriting-oriented notebooks.
What Notely does differently
Notely describes itself as an open-source alternative to Goodnotes. Its product page advertises handwritten notes, PDF annotation, on-device handwriting search, an infinite canvas, and exports to Markdown, PDF, PNG, and SVG. These are product claims, not independently tested results. Notely’s product page

The most distinctive combination in that list is the canvas and export workflow: write or arrange content across a canvas that is not presented as a sequence of fixed notebook pages, then export notes in formats that include Markdown as well as visual and document formats. The page does not establish how Markdown export handles handwriting or canvas layout, so check the resulting file with your own note before relying on it for a particular workflow.

| Sync and hosting | Self-hosted sync is labeled “Coming Soon,” not presented as a currently available feature. Notely | Not established by the cited Goodnotes pages. |
Where Goodnotes’ format distinction matters
Goodnotes’ Text Documents are described as pageless and focused on typing. Its support page says that format does not include drawing elements, the highlighter, ruler, tape, or freeform annotation tools, and directs users to notebooks for handwriting, drawing, and freeform annotation. #1 Best Overall
- Creative Paper Tool: Huion Note is an app-based paper product that consists of a digital pen, regular A5 notepad, and software application. It gives you digital copies of your handwritten work while still allowing the tactile aesthetic of pen to real paper.
- From Page To Screen: Everything you write is simultaneously captured with vector lines and seamlessly transferred to your device via the free Huion Note app (available for mobile devices on iOS and Android).
- Never Miss A Word: Record audio to sync with your notes, and click play to relive your handwriting process and ensure nothing gets lost.
- Share Your Ideas: Easily access your notes, inspiration, drawings, and doodles from the mobile device and one-click share as images, PDF, or MP4 files with your classmates, teammates & and colleagues.
- Organize Your Notes: Keep all your notes in one place and you can merge, split, or move the pages into different groups as you want in the Huion Note app. It also provides various editing tools such as highlighter to help you re-edit your notes and highlight key ideas.
That is a specific limitation of the Text Document format, not a general limitation of Goodnotes. Goodnotes separately documents handwriting and PDF annotation, and says sticky notes can be moved or collapsed. Avoid treating Notely’s broad canvas as proof that Goodnotes cannot support freeform work in its notebook format. Goodnotes sticky notes
What to check before choosing Notely
- Try the canvas with a real note. Notely advertises an infinite canvas, but the product page does not establish how it behaves on your device or how well it suits page-based tasks such as printing and handouts.
- Test the export you need. Markdown, PDF, PNG, and SVG are listed, but the page does not explain what each export preserves from handwritten or spatially arranged content.
- Confirm platform fit. The listed platforms are iPad, macOS, Windows, and Linux; exact hardware requirements, version numbers, and feature parity across them are not stated.
- Do not plan around self-hosted sync yet. Notely marks it “Coming Soon.”
- Treat performance language as a claim. Notely advertises “120Hz inking with pressure & tilt”; that figure is not an independently verified benchmark here.
Who should consider it
Notely is worth investigating if you want to explore handwriting on an open-ended canvas and value having Markdown among the advertised export options. Goodnotes remains a relevant fit if your workflow centers on its documented PDF annotation, handwriting search, or notebook format. The available product information supports comparing these workflows, but not a hands-on verdict about writing feel, reliability, or overall quality.
