NotebookLM notebooks can now be shared publicly via links. That means anyone with the URL can view the notebook content, without needing a direct invite flow.
This guide explains what the feature likely changes in practice, how to turn it on, what public links allow (and what they don’t), and how to avoid accidentally sharing sensitive notes.

A public share link is a URL that grants access based on possession of the link, not on a specific user account permission. In NotebookLM, that typically maps to a viewer experience for your notebook’s contents.
#1 Best Overall
- A classroom classic: this 6-pack of 1-subject spiral notebooks helps you identify your subjects at a glance with color-coding efficiency; color assortment may vary
- The right ruling: these 8" x 10-1/2", college-ruled notebooks fit more writing per page than wide-ruled sheets; each notebook provides 70 double-sided sheets with red margin lines
- Perect perforation: Dependable micro-perforated sheets retain your must-have notes but still detach cleanly when you’re ready to revise
- Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
- 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker
Think of it as “publish for anyone with the link,” not “share with specific people.” If your notebook includes private material, this distinction matters.
Prerequisites and what you should check first
Before you share publicly, confirm three things: you’re signed into the correct account, you’re editing the right notebook, and the content is safe to expose.
Check your account state
- Sign in to the same Google account (or provider account) you use for NotebookLM.
- Verify you have permission to modify the notebook (or at least to access sharing controls).
Confirm the sharing control is available
The feature may roll out gradually. If you don’t see the public link option, it can be rollout timing, account eligibility, or an interface difference.
Recommended Free Tools
- Try a hard refresh and re-open the notebook.
- Switch browsers (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) or update to the latest version.
Review the notebook content
Public links are unforgiving: once you’ve shared, the URL may circulate. Remove or sanitize sensitive sections before publishing.
How to share a NotebookLM notebook publicly via a link (web)
The exact UI can vary slightly, but the workflow is generally the same: open the notebook, open the share menu, choose public link, then copy the URL.
Rank #2
- VERSATILE USE: 5-pack of wide ruled spiral notebooks for school, home and office use; ideal for note-taking, journaling, keeping records, and more
- WIDE RULED PAPER: 70 sheets per notebook with wide ruled lines and perforation for easy removal
- SMOOTH WRITING: Smooth paper helps reduce ink smearing for cleaner notes and assignments
- DURABLE DESIGN: Paper cover provides protection and durability
- CONVENIENT SIZE: Measures 8" x 10.5", for backpacks and desk storage
Step-by-step: generate a public link
- Open NotebookLM in your browser and sign in.
- Select the notebook you want to share.
- Look for a Share button or a Share / Permissions option (often in the header or notebook menu).
- Choose Public link or Anyone with the link.
- Set the access level to Public (or the equivalent option that enables public viewing via URL).
- Click Copy link or Copy URL.
- Paste the link into an incognito window (logged out) to confirm what viewers will see.
If you see multiple share modes
Some interfaces provide “specific people” and “link-based access” as separate modes. Choose the one explicitly labeled public or anyone-with-link.
How public links behave: viewing, editing, and privacy boundaries
Public link sharing is about access to view the notebook content. Editing is a separate permission surface.
Viewer access vs editor access
- Viewer access: Anyone with the URL can open the notebook in view-only mode in most setups.
- Editor access: Usually requires being signed in and having explicit permissions. Public links typically don’t grant write access.
Propagation and caching
If you change or disable sharing later, some viewers may still load cached versions briefly. Plan to verify after updates by testing in a fresh incognito session.
Revocation expectations
Disabling a public link should invalidate the URL, but the speed can vary. Treat revocation as “remove future access,” then verify the link immediately after you revoke.
Security and compliance checklist before you publish
Public links are convenient, but they raise real data exposure risk. Use this checklist to reduce accidental leaks.
Rank #3
- 1 subject notebook comes with 70 wide ruled, double-sided sheets. Wide ruling is ideal for the younger student who needs more space between lines.
- Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
- Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder. Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover.
- Includes 6 notebooks in randomly selected colors: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple or Black. Colors will vary with each purchase.
- Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts
Sanitize sensitive content
- Remove personal data: emails, phone numbers, addresses, student IDs.
- Remove secrets: API keys, tokens, passwords, private URLs, session IDs.
- Scrub internal information: confidential project names, customer identifiers, unreleased roadmaps.
Watch for indirect leakage
Even if you think a snippet is harmless, references can disclose context. For example, a prompt that includes an internal hostname or a document title might be enough to identify a dataset.
Limit link distribution
- Don’t paste public links into places you don’t control (public comments, open issue trackers, or social posts).
- If you must share broadly, share a trimmed “public-safe” notebook and keep the working version private.
Troubleshooting: when public link sharing doesn’t work
If the option is missing, the link won’t copy, or the URL doesn’t open, start with the fastest checks: rollout availability, account permissions, and browser behavior.
Problem: I don’t see the public link option
- Check rollout timing: features can appear gradually. Try again later.
- Confirm you’re using the latest interface: update browser and refresh the page.
- Permission mismatch: if you don’t have rights over the notebook, sharing controls may be hidden.
Problem: Copy link fails or the URL is blank
- Disable aggressive browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy toolbars) temporarily.
- Try copying via keyboard: highlight the link field and press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (macOS).
- Hard refresh the notebook page, then re-open Share.
Problem: The link opens to an error or login page
- Test the link in an incognito window to confirm whether access is truly public.
- Verify the share mode is set to Public or Anyone with the link (not just “restricted”).
- If you recently revoked access, wait for any permission propagation and re-test.
Problem: Viewers can open the link but can’t see content
That can happen if the notebook has content states that require loading permissions (or if the notebook contains missing attachments). Ask viewers to test on the same device/browser, then compare what you see while logged in vs logged out.
Alternatives: safer sharing options when you don’t want public access
If you’re sharing drafts, internal notes, or anything that includes sensitive material, prefer controlled access methods.
Share with specific people (recommended for work content)
This mode limits access to invited accounts. It’s the right choice when you need collaboration or review with known stakeholders.

Publish a cleaned version as a separate notebook
Create a second notebook that contains only the public-safe summary, then share that copy publicly. This reduces the risk of accidental exposure from ongoing edits.
Use screenshots or exports for one-way distribution
If you don’t need interactive viewing, export or share a static format. Static sharing is often easier to control and revoke (especially if you’re distributing outside NotebookLM).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Publishing the wrong notebook: verify the notebook title and content before generating the link.
- Forgetting to re-check after edits: if new sensitive content gets added later, your old public link could expose it too.
- Assuming “public link” means “view-only for the web”: confirm viewer behavior by testing in incognito.
- Sharing the link in a way you can’t control: once indexed or reposted, revoking may not fully erase copies.
Bottom Line
Public link sharing in NotebookLM is a straightforward way to let anyone view a notebook without invites. Use it only after you’ve scrubbed sensitive details and tested the experience in an incognito session.
If you don’t see the public option, treat it as rollout or permission-related and troubleshoot with browser/version changes and account checks before you assume it’s broken.

Can I stop public access after I share?
Yes—public links can usually be disabled or switched back to restricted access from the notebook’s Share/Permissions panel. Re-test the old URL in incognito after changing the setting.

Does a public link let others edit my NotebookLM notebook?
Typically, public links are for viewing. Editing usually requires signed-in permissions. If you see an edit option for a viewer, re-check the sharing mode and access level.
Will search engines index my public NotebookLM link?
That depends on NotebookLM’s indexing and robots behavior at the time you publish. Don’t assume indexing won’t happen—treat public as potentially discoverable.
Why does my link work for me but not for others?
You may be logged in with elevated permissions while viewers lack the correct access. Confirm you set the notebook to public/anyone-with-link, then verify using an incognito test.
Is this available for every account and notebook?
Availability can vary due to rollout timing and notebook permission ownership. If you don’t see public link controls, check account permissions and try again after updating your browser.
