Nostalgex Makes a Jellyfin Library Feel Like Old-School Cable TV

Nostalgex makes a Jellyfin library feel more like cable TV with automatically scheduled channels, a guide, an Apple TV app, and a free browser tuner.

Nostalgex turns a compatible personal media library into automatically scheduled, themed channels with a TV-style guide. It is not a Jellyfin server plugin: it is a client experience available as an Apple TV app and a browser-based tuner. It can make browsing feel more like channel surfing, but it plays media from your own server rather than adding a streaming catalog.

What Nostalgex does with a Jellyfin library

Nostalgex connects to an existing media server and builds channels from its library. Its site lists Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby as supported servers, and describes channels as being generated automatically from the media collection. The product’s tagline is “Your library. Now it’s cable.” That captures the interface idea, not a promise of live broadcast television or new content. Nostalgex

Instead of choosing a specific film or episode from a library list, you can open a guide, choose a channel, and let its schedule determine what plays. The source article reports that channel scheduling uses genre, studio, release year, rating, and watch history. Available channel packages can be enabled in settings, and the selected Jellyfin user affects the content presented.

How to use it with Jellyfin

On Apple TV

  1. Install the Nostalgex app from the Apple TV App Store. The listing describes it as free and Apple TV-only, and says it requires a Plex or Jellyfin server on the local network. Nostalgex on the App Store
  2. Connect the Apple TV and Jellyfin server to the same local network, then open Nostalgex.
  3. Enter the Jellyfin server’s IP address and port, and sign in with the relevant account.
  4. Choose the available channel packages and browse the guide. If you use different Jellyfin accounts, select the one whose library and watch history should shape the experience.

In a browser

Nostalgex also offers a free web tuner. It is the alternative if you do not want to use the Apple TV app; for remote viewing, your Jellyfin server must already be reachable remotely. The source article reports that the web and Apple TV versions may show different schedules, so do not assume their guides will match exactly. Start at the Nostalgex website for the browser option.

Why the quality of your Jellyfin library matters

Automatic channel building depends on the app being able to read the library and its metadata. If titles are missing, misclassified, or appear in the wrong places, check the underlying Jellyfin collection before troubleshooting the guide. In the source article, the author found that rearranging disorganized files and rescanning the library was needed before items appeared correctly.

  • Make sure the media files are in the folders Jellyfin scans.
  • Check that the library scan has completed and that the titles appear correctly in Jellyfin.
  • Review metadata such as genre, studio, release year, and rating, since those are among the factors the article says Nostalgex uses to schedule channels.
  • Confirm that the selected Jellyfin user has access to the library you expect.

What setup and playback are like

The source article’s author reports that Nostalgex initially created four channels, with more channel packages available in settings. The author also reports playing some 1080p and 4K HDR Blu-ray-ripped MKV files, while noting that some titles took time to load and showed a static screen during loading. Those are observations from one article, not controlled compatibility tests or a guarantee that every file, codec, or device will work.

Playback support has changed in recent releases. Nostalgex’s September 2026 release notes identify version 1.0.14, with a premieres channel and seven additional channels; earlier September notes describe a fix for HEVC playback on Apple TV HD and uninterrupted playback for multipart Jellyfin and Emby movies. Check the official site and release notes for current behavior rather than assuming a particular format or device is supported.

Nostalgex, Tunarr, and ErsatzTV: convenience versus control

The key distinction is how much programming you want to configure yourself. The source article characterizes Tunarr and ErsatzTV as more customizable, while Nostalgex automatically assembles themed schedules from a library. The evidence here does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison, but these practical differences can guide the choice.

ErsatzTV More configurable approach, according to the source article More control over channels and programming than Nostalgex, according to the source article Not stated in the cited sources

Choose Nostalgex if your priority is getting a guide and themed channels with little manual scheduling. If you want to specify exactly what airs on each channel, the article points toward Tunarr or ErsatzTV instead. In either case, a properly organized and scanned Jellyfin library is important.

Privacy and device requirements

Nostalgex says the app connects directly from your device to your media server and that credentials and library data do not pass through Nostalgex servers. That is the vendor’s privacy statement, not an independently audited finding. Nostalgex privacy and product information

Is Nostalgex the right way to make Jellyfin feel like cable?

Nostalgex suits Jellyfin users who want a ready-made channel guide and less time deciding what to watch. It reorganizes access to media already in your library; the trade-off for automatic scheduling is less control over the exact contents of each channel than a more configurable tool can offer. Its Apple TV app and browser tuner provide two ways to access the guide, while the usefulness of the result depends on a reachable server and a library whose files and metadata are in good shape.
