Nordstrom is the full-line retailer; Nordstrom Rack is Nordstrom, Inc.’s off-price division. Rack sells both merchandise sourced from Nordstrom and goods specially purchased for Rack, so the two stores can share brands without carrying the same items. Compare the exact product, current price, return eligibility and services before choosing.
How Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack are related
Nordstrom Rack is part of Nordstrom, Inc., but it is a different retail format from the company’s full-line Nordstrom stores. Nordstrom describes Rack as a more self-service shopping experience. Nordstrom’s Rack FAQ presents it as an off-price option carrying many of the same brands as Nordstrom.

What Nordstrom Rack sells
Rack’s merchandise comes from more than one source. According to Nordstrom’s company fact sheet, it includes merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com, as well as items specially purchased from brands also carried at Nordstrom. That means Rack is not simply a destination for leftover full-line inventory.

The company says Rack’s mix is tailored to local communities and that new deliveries arrive regularly. Selection can therefore vary by store and change over time. A brand sold at both retailers does not guarantee that Rack has the same style, color or size available at Nordstrom.

Are prices lower at Nordstrom Rack?
Nordstrom describes most Rack merchandise as discounted by 30–70% in its FAQ; its fact sheet describes savings of up to 70% off regular prices. These are the retailer’s claims, not a guarantee that every item is discounted by that amount—or that Rack’s price is lower than Nordstrom’s current price for an identical item. Check the price of the specific product you want and compare like for like.
Do Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack carry the same brands?
There is substantial brand overlap, but it does not establish identical assortments. In a 2024 brand-identity announcement, Nordstrom said that 90% of its top brands are sold at Rack. That company-reported figure refers to brands, not the share of Nordstrom styles or products available at Rack. Rack’s changing, locally tailored assortment means the item you want may not be there.

Which one should you shop?
- Choose Nordstrom as your starting point if you need a particular item, want to compare a broader full-line assortment, or value services such as alterations or styling help. Confirm that the item and service are available at your location.
- Browse Nordstrom Rack if you are open to a changing off-price selection and willing to look for a suitable item at a lower price. Check live availability and the actual price rather than assuming a particular style or discount will be there.
- Compare the purchase, not just the store names: verify the exact item and size, current price, applicable services, and return terms. There is no universal winner; the better option depends on what you need and what is available for that purchase.
