It remains usable for calls, text messages, music and light browsing when the battery and carrier compatibility are good, but it is generally a poor primary smartphone in 2026. Its Snapdragon 430 platform, 16 GB of storage, 720p display, micro-USB port and Android 9-era software are now major constraints.
Any used purchase should be treated as a very low-cost backup, minimalist phone or collector item. Verify the exact TA model, LTE and VoLTE support, battery condition, IMEI status and Google-account removal before paying.

The phone was announced in February 2017 alongside the Nokia 3 and Nokia 6 and was positioned between them. Historical Indian launch prices were about ₹12,499 for a 2 GB model and ₹13,499 for a later 3 GB configuration; these are launch figures, not useful 2026 prices. How to identify the original Nokia 5
Look for the first-generation Nokia 5, commonly associated with model TA-1024. Other regional variants include TA-1027, TA-1044 and TA-1053. The phone has a 5.2-inch screen, a front fingerprint reader below the display, a single rear camera with dual-tone flash, a micro-USB port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

- Open Settings → About phone and record the TA model and IMEI.
- Compare the model with the carrier bands required in your country; TA variants are not interchangeable for network support.
- Do not confuse the handset with the Nokia 5.1 (2018), Nokia 5.3 (2020) or Nokia 5.4 (2021).

Regional differences matter. RAM, SIM layout, NFC and LTE bands can change by TA number. Sources include the Tech Advisor review, Android Authority review and PhoneArena’s specification record. Some references list microSD support to 128 GB and others to 256 GB, so check the exact firmware and card before buying a high-capacity card.
Design and display
In 2017, the Nokia 5’s aluminum-style unibody, rounded edges, 2.5D glass and restrained Android interface were compelling at budget prices. The front fingerprint sensor and dedicated capacitive navigation keys on some builds make it feel different from current all-screen phones.

The 5.2-inch 1280 × 720 IPS panel is adequate for calls, messaging, basic web pages and older video. Its pixel density and conventional 60 Hz-class refresh are clearly behind modern Full HD and high-refresh displays. On a used example, inspect for scratches, yellowing, uneven backlighting and areas where touch no longer responds.

There is no USB-C, water-resistance rating, face unlock or high-refresh display. The headphone socket remains useful, but the micro-USB connector and an aging port are practical disadvantages.
Performance in 2026
The Snapdragon 430 was entry-level hardware when new. It still handles phone calls, SMS, light browsing, music and simple messaging, especially on the 3 GB model. App launches are slow by current standards, and the 2 GB version has limited multitasking headroom.

- Expect stutter with large social-media apps, modern websites and navigation running together.
- Modern 3D games and intensive photo or video editing are poor fits.
- Storage wear, background services and battery degradation can make a surviving unit slower than launch reviews suggest.
Three gigabytes of RAM is preferable, but it does not turn the Nokia 5 into a fast modern phone.
Android history and present-day software limits
- Android 7.1.1 Nougat at launch.
- Android 8.0 Oreo.
- Android 8.1 Oreo.
- Android 9 Pie.
The phone shipped with a relatively clean, lightly customized Android installation. Historical records associate Android 9 Pie with the final major release, but that does not mean current security support. The handset is outside the normal modern-support window; do not rely on it for banking, enterprise access, payment services or other security-sensitive work without checking each app’s requirements.
Some Google Play applications may still install, while others may refuse updates or stop working. Android version and security-patch status are separate. Cameras: acceptable snapshots, obsolete system
The 13 MP autofocus rear camera and dual-tone flash can produce acceptable daylight photos for casual use. Dynamic range, fine detail, low-light performance, shutter speed and processing are weak beside current phones. The 8 MP autofocus selfie camera is functional but not a reason to buy the device. Video capability and stabilization are limited.

The original 3,000 mAh non-removable battery was reasonable for the hardware and 720p screen. Every surviving 2017 unit is now old enough for battery aging to be a central buying risk. Rapid percentage drops, heat, unexpected shutdowns or a lifted back cover indicate a failing or swollen cell. Have replacement work done by a qualified repair provider.

Nominal 16 GB storage is the other major limitation: Android, updates and preinstalled applications consume a substantial portion before personal files are added. A microSD card can hold photos, music and some app data, but it cannot create modern internal storage. Portable and adoptable-storage behavior varies by Android version and configuration; test the card and do not entrust important data to a slow or failing one. Network and connectivity checks
The Nokia 5 is 4G-only. A 4G label does not guarantee service on every current network because LTE bands, VoLTE certification and 2G/3G shutdown policies differ by carrier and country.
- Confirm the exact TA model and its LTE bands.
- Ask the carrier whether that model is approved for VoLTE and emergency calling.
- Check SIM-lock status, IMEI validity and blacklist status.
- Test mobile data, calls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS with the intended SIM.

Used-buying inspection checklist
- Identify it: Check Settings → About phone, the TA number, IMEI and Android version.
- Check account status: Require the seller to remove their Google account and complete a factory reset in your presence.
- Inspect the battery: Reject swelling, heat, rapid drain or unexplained shutdowns.
- Test the screen: Look for cracks, dead pixels, discoloration and missed touch input across the entire panel.
- Test hardware: Verify the fingerprint reader, camera focus, flash, speaker, microphone, earpiece, vibration motor and headphone jack.
- Test ports and cards: Confirm that micro-USB charges and transfers data, and that both SIM and microSD slots work.
- Test connectivity: Make a call, test VoLTE if required, send a text, use mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
- Test software: Install the essential apps before completing the purchase, especially banking, authentication, navigation and messaging apps.
- Assess total cost: Add likely battery, screen, port, charger and microSD expenses to the asking price.
A phone that merely boots can still fail modern apps, carrier registration, Bluetooth accessories or GPS-dependent services.

Later does not automatically mean good value in 2026. A newer used Samsung, Motorola, Google, OnePlus or comparable Android phone will generally be preferable when it offers USB-C, more storage, stronger LTE/VoLTE support, a newer Android release and a healthier battery. Specific model recommendations require a current local price and availability check.
Who should still consider it?
Reasonable uses
- Calls and SMS.
- A cheap emergency or backup handset.
- Music and offline files.
- Offline navigation after testing the required app.
- A minimalist device, child’s first phone or Nokia collector item.
Poor uses
- Primary banking, payments or enterprise authentication.
- Heavy social-media multitasking or gaming.
- Photography, long-term daily use or 5G.
- Any purchase priced close to a much newer used phone.
Bottom line
Buy a Nokia 5 (2017) only when it is very inexpensive, unlocked, carrier-compatible and in unusually good condition—preferably the 3 GB version with a recently replaced battery. For primary use in 2026, a newer used Android phone is the safer choice because it is more likely to provide current app compatibility, USB-C, better cameras, more storage and meaningful remaining security support.
