Most consumer ANC headphones use both approaches. ANC can help with steady low-frequency noise, but it does not make a space silent—and it is not a substitute for rated hearing protection.
How noise isolation works
Noise isolation, also called passive noise reduction, comes from the headphone’s physical design. Closed ear cups and padding block some sound from reaching the ear. Earbuds can do the same when their tips fit snugly and form a seal. How well this works depends on the design and fit.

A good seal matters for more than comfort: gaps can let sound in, reducing passive isolation. With earbuds, a different tip size may help if the supplied tips do not seal well; check that any replacement tips are compatible with the specific model.
How active noise cancellation works
Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones to pick up surrounding sound and electronics to generate an opposing signal. This reduces some of the sound reaching the listener. Consumer ANC headphones generally combine that electronic effect with the passive isolation provided by their ear cups or ear tips, rather than relying on ANC alone. Sennheiser Hearing explains how ANC and passive isolation work; Bose also describes them as complementary technologies.

Which sounds does ANC reduce best?
ANC is generally most useful against steady, low-frequency sounds, such as an engine drone or air-conditioning hum. Voices, sudden noises, and other changing sounds are harder to cancel, so they may remain audible. Performance varies by headphone and fit; no headphone can be assumed to eliminate all ambient sound. Sennheiser Hearing discusses ANC’s strengths and limits.
For voices or sharper sounds, the physical seal still matters: isolation can reduce sound entering around the ear or ear tip, but it does not guarantee that speech or abrupt noise will disappear. A practical comparison should consider the sounds you expect, how securely the headphones fit, comfort over the intended wear period, and whether you need to hear what is happening around you.

Are noise-canceling headphones better for planes?
They may be a useful choice if your main concern is a steady, low-frequency aircraft cabin hum, because that is the kind of sound ANC generally reduces more effectively. They will not silence every cabin sound, and the result depends on the headphone and its fit. A well-sealing pair of passive noise-isolating headphones can also reduce some ambient sound without ANC.
Do ANC headphones protect your hearing?
Do not treat ordinary ANC headphones or earbuds as hearing protection unless they are labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). NIOSH states that noise-canceling technology “should not be considered hearing protection unless labeled with an NRR.” Its guidance identifies earplugs, earmuffs, and canal caps as hearing-protector types. For hazardous workplace noise, use protection appropriate to the exposure rather than relying on consumer listening headphones. NIOSH guidance on providing hearing protection.

NIOSH’s occupational recommended exposure limit is 85 dBA over an eight-hour shift. This is an occupational exposure limit, not a universal safe-volume threshold for every listening situation. NIOSH’s guidance on understanding noise exposure gives the figure and its workplace scope.
For general hearing-health precautions, CDC advises turning volume down, taking breaks from noise, avoiding loud situations where possible, and using adequate hearing protection when loud noise cannot be avoided. CDC hearing-loss prevention guidance.

Which type should you choose?
| What matters most | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Steady low-frequency hum, such as an engine or ventilation | Consider ANC, while expecting some sound to remain. |
| Voices or sharper, changing sounds | Prioritize a secure physical fit and realistic expectations; ANC may not remove these sounds. |
| Comfort during extended wear | Compare ear-cup or ear-tip fit and comfort for the time you plan to wear them. |
| Need to stay aware of surroundings | Consider how much sound reduction is appropriate for the setting; neither label alone tells you how much awareness you will retain. |
| Hazardous noise exposure | Use hearing protection suited to the exposure; consumer ANC is not a substitute unless the product is labeled with an NRR. |
In short, “noise-isolating” describes a physical approach, while “noise-canceling” usually refers to ANC added to physical isolation. Choose based on the noise you need to reduce, fit and comfort, and whether the situation calls for actual hearing protection.
