Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor reservation jobs that must survive restarts, retry safely, or obey a rate limit shared by multiple workers, use a durable queue or job system. Use cron to trigger predictable periodic work—often a reconciliation scan that enqueues jobs—not as the authority for whether a reservation is valid or available. Keep that authority in your database, and make every handler safe to run more than once.
Queue or cron: which should you choose?
The decision depends on what the work must guarantee. A timer or cron trigger can start a periodic task; a durable queue can track individual jobs and provide lifecycle features such as retries, delayed execution, and worker concurrency. Neither replaces the transaction or constraint that protects reservation state.

| Option | Good fit | Important tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| In-process timer | A single long-running service needs a lightweight periodic trigger, a later scan can repeat missed work, and timing drift is acceptable. | Node.js does not guarantee exact callback timing or ordering; event-loop activity can delay callbacks. Process uptime and deployment topology matter, so define how a later run recovers missed periods. Node.js Timers documentation. |
| OS or platform cron | A straightforward periodic command or reconciliation scan, particularly when the hosting platform manages scheduling. | Cron starts a command; it does not by itself provide application-level per-job retries, rate limiting, or job lifecycle tracking. Specific platform cron products are not compared here. |
| Durable queue, such as BullMQ | Work needs delayed execution, retries and recovery, worker concurrency, or shared queue-level rate limiting. | Adds backend operations and requires idempotent handlers. BullMQ describes delivery as at-least-once in worst-case scenarios, so a job may need to be safe to process again. BullMQ overview. |
| BullMQ with PostgreSQL backend | The team prefers a relational database-backed option or wants to avoid operating a separate Redis service. | BullMQ’s optional PostgreSQL backend requires PostgreSQL 13 or later, with 14 or later recommended, and the pg package. BullMQ describes Redis as its more battle-tested option. BullMQ documentation. |
| Custom PostgreSQL table queue | Queue needs are modest and specific, and the team is prepared to own locking, leases, retries, cleanup, and monitoring. | SKIP LOCKED is a database primitive, not a complete job system. PostgreSQL warns that it presents an inconsistent view and is unsuitable for general-purpose reads, though it can help multiple consumers avoid lock contention on queue-like rows. What rate limiting and concurrency control mean
Rate limiting controls work over time
BullMQ’s documented rate limiter applies queue-wide across workers using that queue. Jobs that hit the limit remain waiting rather than being discarded. This suits a limit shared by workers calling the same constrained resource, but it is not automatically a per-customer limit. The older BullMQ group-key example is documented as valid only before BullMQ 3.0; do not treat it as current per-customer support. BullMQ rate limiting.
Concurrency controls simultaneous work
Concurrency sets how much work can be in progress at once; rate limiting controls how frequently work is allowed to start or be processed over time. They solve different problems and may both be needed. BullMQ documents rate limiting separately from worker concurrency. Rate limiting and worker concurrency.

Choose the limit’s scope from the constrained resource: for example, the shared API account, service, or other capacity boundary. A queue-wide limiter is useful only if workers that share that resource also share the applicable queue-level limit.
Keep reservation correctness in the database
A queued job can be stale by the time a worker handles it: a reservation may have been cancelled, expired, or changed, or capacity may have been claimed elsewhere. Treat the database as the authority for reservation status, capacity, expiry, and uniqueness—not the queue payload or a successful enqueue.

- Enqueue work with a stable identity. Use a stable job ID or domain idempotency key where the queue supports it. This can reduce duplicate enqueues, but it does not eliminate duplicates caused by retries, crashes, or external side effects.
- Re-read current state when processing. Before an irreversible action, check the reservation under a transaction or equivalent guarded update. Apply the relevant status and capacity conditions as part of the state change.
- Make the operation idempotent. Repeating the same handler should not create a second reservation, consume capacity twice, or repeat an external effect without control. Where an external service supports idempotency keys, use the same domain operation identity there.
- Recover through repeatable scans. For periodic expiration or cleanup, schedule a reconciliation scan that finds due records and triggers work. Design the scan to run again safely instead of relying on one timer firing at one exact instant.
These safeguards matter because BullMQ documents at-least-once delivery in worst-case scenarios. Queue recovery helps preserve work, but it does not establish whether a reservation remains valid or unique. BullMQ overview.
Choose a scheduling pattern for reservation work
Use cron or a scheduler to find due work
A periodic scheduler can initiate a scan for reservations that need expiration, reminders, or reconciliation. The scan should select only records still eligible for the action and enqueue or process them in a repeatable way. This hybrid—scheduler for periodic discovery, queue workers for durable job execution—is often a practical fit.

Use delayed jobs for individual deadlines
When a reservation has a specific due time, a delayed queue job can represent that deadline and provide job-level retry and recovery features. Still re-check the record when the job runs: a cancellation or extension may have made the queued instruction obsolete.
Use a timer only for best-effort single-process work
An in-process timer can be enough for lightweight periodic work when a later scan can recover omissions and occasional timing drift is harmless. Node.js explicitly makes no guarantee about the exact timing or ordering of timer callbacks. Node.js Timers documentation.

When a PostgreSQL queue is appropriate
BullMQ offers PostgreSQL as an optional backend, with PostgreSQL 13+ required and 14+ recommended; its documentation identifies Redis as the more battle-tested backend. Check the current requirements and package setup before choosing it. BullMQ documentation.

A custom table queue may be reasonable if the workload and operational requirements are deliberately small, but the team must implement and maintain claiming, leases, retry state, cleanup, and monitoring. PostgreSQL’s SKIP LOCKED can help concurrent consumers avoid waiting on already-locked queue rows; PostgreSQL cautions that skipped rows make the view inconsistent, so this is not a general-purpose query strategy. Plan operations and version-specific APIs
- Monitor queue age, retries and failures, and work that remains stuck.
- Reconcile reservation records against expected outcomes, including expired or otherwise overdue reservations.
- Check worker concurrency and rate-limit scope against the actual resource being protected.
- Account for database connection capacity if the queue backend shares PostgreSQL with application traffic.
- Verify scheduled-job APIs against the installed BullMQ major version. BullMQ’s v6 announcement says legacy repeatable-job APIs are removed in favor of Job Schedulers and describes a v5-to-v6 migration involving API replacement, schedule recreation, removal of old Redis entries, and deployment steps. Follow the current migration documentation for the exact version in use rather than copying an older example. BullMQ v6 announcement.
No cited source establishes a universal throughput or latency threshold at which a queue beats cron for reservation traffic. Choose based on required recovery, schedule semantics, rate-limit scope, operational capacity, and the correctness controls around reservation state.
