What the 2015 announcement established
The announcement described the Node.js Foundation as a new home for the project, operating with an open technical governance structure that had been examined, revised, and agreed through public review. It also announced new investment in Node.js.
This was a historical organizational announcement, not a specification of a new runtime release. The Linux Foundation presented the Foundation as a way to support technical work while allowing contributors to debate decisions openly and collaborate on code.
Why Node.js and io.js were moving together
According to the announcement, technical committee members from the Node.js and io.js communities had spent six months in meetings and debate. They had agreed that moving forward together was the best path, creating what the announcement called a unified community.

The announcement said discussions about merging the two code bases would continue in the following weeks and months. It records that plan and the agreement between the communities; it does not, by itself, establish the later technical result of that work.
What “industry- and community-wide support” meant
Open technical decision-making
The Foundation’s governance was intended to let contributors participate in technical discussions and review decisions publicly rather than placing the project under the control of a single company. The announcement expressed this approach through the observation that “the best ideas result from disagreement and smart people discussing the merits of decisions and, of course, code.” That sentence was published by the Linux Foundation without an individual speaker attribution.
