“No-Upload” Browser Tools and Network Traffic: How to Check What Actually Leaves Your Browser

A "no-upload" label usually describes the selected file, not every request a page makes. A Chrome Network panel walkthrough and a classification of what outside requests mean.

A “no-upload” label usually describes the file you pick, not everything the page does. The browser still downloads the tool’s code, and some features contact outside services whether or not your file leaves your machine. The only way to check a specific tool is to record the Network panel while you run that exact action, then sort the requests by destination and purpose.

This guide covers the capture method, the request types to look for, and what five browser-tool vendors say about their own behavior. Those vendor statements are not traffic captures of the sites, and this article does not independently verify them. Treat them as claims to test.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Two different claims

“Your file never leaves your browser” describes one data flow: the file you selected. “This site sends no network traffic” is a much broader claim, and most browser tools do not make it. A page that processes a PDF in JavaScript was still fetched from a server. It may also load a language pack for text recognition, an analytics script, an advertisement, or a model file. Each of those is a request. None of them, by itself, shows that your document was uploaded.

A capture therefore answers a narrow question: did any request carry the file, or its contents, to a destination during the action I recorded? It cannot show what a server does with data after it arrives, and it covers only the browser version, page, input, and settings you actually used.

Recording a capture in Chrome

Chrome’s own documentation describes the Network panel in its Network panel overview and lists request types and features in the Network features reference. The steps below use those panels.

  1. Start from a clean profile, or write down which extensions are enabled. Open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions, then Manage Extensions. Ad blockers and PDF utilities inject their own requests and can muddy the log.
  2. Open the tool page, then open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS. Select the Network tab. Open DevTools before loading the page, because Chrome logs requests only while DevTools is open, and that includes the initial document and asset requests.
  3. Turn on Preserve log in the Network toolbar. Without it, the log clears when the page navigates or reloads.
  4. Click the clear control, reload the page, and let it finish. This baseline shows what loading the tool requests before you touch it.
  5. Clear the log again, then run one action at a time: select the file, start processing, download the result. Note the time of each step so you can match requests to actions.
  6. Set the filter to All, not only Fetch/XHR. Scripts, WebAssembly files, images, and beacons can all carry or fetch data, so a file-related request is not always an XHR.
  7. Click a request. The Headers tab shows the method and full URL. The Payload tab shows form fields or the request body. The Initiator column shows which script triggered the request.
  8. Before sharing a capture, use the export control in the Network toolbar and choose Export HAR (sanitized). Chrome leaves out Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization headers by default. Still review the file, because URLs and payloads can contain private information.

Classifying what you see

Sorting requests by purpose matters more than counting them. The table below shows the categories that came up in the vendor policies, with what each one typically is and what to check.

Request Typical destination Carries the selected file? What to check
Page and app code (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) The tool’s own host No. This is code the browser downloads. Type Document or Script; initiator is the page
Model or WebAssembly file Host or CDN No. The asset is downloaded to the browser. Size, and whether it repeats on later runs
OCR language data jsDelivr (per PDFChamp’s policy) No, per that policy’s description Fires when OCR is used, not on every page load
Analytics event Google Analytics (PDFChamp, only after acceptance) Not expected; check event parameters for file names Whether it fires with analytics accepted and declined
Advertising or cookie request Ad network (Toolspace discloses possible Google AdSense cookies) Not expected Whether it fires with consent off
URL capture Microlink.io or a WordPress mshots fallback (ImgBench) Sends the typed address, not the uploaded image Present only in URL-capture mode
Peer connection setup Public STUN server (TabTasker) Not described as file content; used for network-path discovery Only during browser-to-browser sharing or video calls
Server processing Vendor server (Purffle Tools, above a stated size limit) Yes, when triggered, per the vendor’s description Appears only past the threshold

What five vendors say about their tools

Each row below is the vendor’s own description from its privacy page. None has been checked against a capture here.

Vendor (privacy page) Policy date Local-processing claim Outside requests disclosed Conditions stated
Toolspace August 25, 2026 Files are processed in the browser JavaScript, and for some tools WebAssembly or model assets; analytics; crash reports; possible Google AdSense cookies Asset downloads vary by tool
PDFChamp August 27, 2026 Local PDF processing Site hosting; OCR language data from jsDelivr; Google Analytics Google Analytics runs only after the user accepts analytics
ImgBench September 23, 2026 Normal image processing is local In website-mockup URL-capture mode, entered addresses go to Microlink.io or a WordPress mshots fallback, which may log them Applies only in URL-capture mode
Purffle Tools September 5, 2026 Describes 102 of its 182 tools as on-device Some local tools can move work to a server above a file-size limit Depends on file size; the 102 of 182 figure is the company’s own count, not an audited share
TabTasker Not stated Not stated as a single claim Public STUN server for browser-to-browser sharing and video calls; AI tools may download an open-source model on first use Sharing and calls; first use of AI tools

Conditions that change the result

A single clean capture of one page does not establish how a tool behaves across all of its uses. Four conditions are worth testing separately.

  • Filter Dimensions: Width: 11 15/16" (304 mm), Height: 7 1/2" (190 mm), Diagonal: 14.1" (358.14 mm) - SightPro Blackout Privacy Filter is engineered to be compatible with Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Samsung, and other laptop brands. Please verify your screen's width and height measurements before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size. [Not optimized for touchscreens.]

It also protects your eyes from harmful glare, UV, and blue light. [Note: It does not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of the distance.]
  • Perfect for Travel and Open Workspaces - Our computer screen privacy filter is the ideal solution for healthcare providers, mobile workers, commuters, students, and business travelers. Buy with confidence – located in the US, Sight Pro specializes in providing best-in-class privacy solutions to individuals, small businesses, corporations, government, and educational institutions. Our privacy screens are Section 889 and TAA compliant.
  • File size. Purffle says some local tools can switch to a server above a file-size limit. Run the smallest and largest files you plan to use, and note where the outside request appears or disappears.
  • Mode. ImgBench’s URL-capture mode is a different path from its ordinary image processing. Capture each mode on its own.
  • Consent. PDFChamp loads Google Analytics only after acceptance. Run the same action twice, once with analytics accepted and once declined, and compare the request lists.
  • First use. TabTasker says AI tools may download a model on first use. A first run and a later run can differ, so record which one you captured.

Troubleshooting a confusing capture

  • The log is empty after the action. Preserve log was off, or the action ran in a different tab or window. Turn on Preserve log and run it again.
  • A large POST appears, but the file is not readable. Binary bodies often do not display as text. Judge the request by its size, method, and destination rather than by readable content.
  • The request comes from an extension. The Initiator column will point to extension code rather than the tool’s own script. Repeat the run in a clean profile to confirm.
  • The host is not in the vendor’s policy. Follow the Initiator chain first. A disclosed host and an undisclosed one are different findings, and the second one is worth reporting as such.

Writing up a capture so it means something

Scope the finding to what you recorded. A sentence such as “In this capture, on Chrome [version] on [date], selecting a 2 MB PDF and running OCR produced no request whose payload contained the file” is a defensible result. “This tool never sends data” is not something one capture can support.
