If texts arrive in Messages but your iPhone makes no sound, shows no banner, or stays blank on the Lock Screen, the cause is usually a notification setting, Silent mode, Focus, a muted conversation, message filtering, or Apple Watch routing. First check whether the message is actually in Messages: a missing alert and a message that was never delivered are different problems.
Start with the symptom: are messages arriving?
Open Messages and look for the text you expected. If it is there, troubleshoot notification delivery below. If it is not, this is a message-delivery problem rather than just a missing alert; check cellular or Wi‑Fi connectivity, iMessage and SMS/MMS service, blocked contacts, and whether the sender can reach you. A notification setting cannot restore a message that never arrived.
Also, Apple notes that when Messages is open and active, the iPhone may not provide a separate notification for each new message. To test reliably, leave Messages, lock the iPhone, and have someone send a new text.
Restore Messages notifications
On iOS 26, Apple’s current troubleshooting path is Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications. Some iOS versions or builds show the route as Settings > Notifications > Messages. If the first route is not present, try the second; menu placement can vary.
- Open the Messages notification settings using the route available on your iPhone.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where alerts should appear: enable Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners as desired.
- Open Sounds and select a tone instead of None. If the control is available, choose a haptic pattern rather than None.
These controls are separate: a notification can be permitted but lack sound, banner, or Lock Screen delivery. If an alert sounds but its message text is hidden, adjust Show Previews rather than enabling more notification types. Its choices include Always, When Unlocked, and Never.
If there is no sound or vibration
Check Silent mode and alert volume
Turn off Silent mode using the Ring/Silent switch or Action button, depending on your iPhone model. Then open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and raise Ringtone and Alerts. The media-volume buttons do not replace this alert-volume control.

Sound and vibration are independent. In Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, choose a setting that permits haptics in your desired mode, such as Always Play or Play in Silent Mode. The available choices can include Don’t Play in Silent Mode and Never Play.
Check Messages tone and haptics
In Messages notification settings, verify that Sounds is not set to None and that the haptic choice is not None. Apple notes that choosing None for Messages affects outgoing message sounds as well as incoming alerts. If sound works but vibration does not, focus on the Haptics settings; if vibration works but sound does not, check Silent mode, alert volume, and the selected tone.

Check Focus and temporary notification muting
Turn off or adjust Focus
Open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off the active mode for a test. Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Driving, and custom Focus modes can silence all notifications or permit only selected people and apps.
For a targeted fix, go to Settings > Focus, open the relevant Focus, and review People, Apps, Options, and Add Schedule. Allow Messages or the people whose texts you need instead of disabling Focus permanently. Schedules or automatic activation by time, location, or app can make the issue seem intermittent. If senders see that your notifications are silenced, check whether Focus Status is shared.
Unmute Messages from a notification
If a Messages alert is visible in Notification Center, swipe left on it and tap Options. If Messages was muted for an hour or a day, choose Unmute; View Settings opens its notification controls. Muted app alerts can go directly to Notification Center without appearing on the Lock Screen, lighting the screen, playing a sound, or showing a banner.

The conversation may have Hide Alerts enabled. In Messages, find the thread and swipe left to use its mute control, or open the conversation, tap the contact or group icon at the top, and turn off Hide Alerts. Messages can continue arriving in a muted thread even though its alerts are suppressed. This setting affects that conversation, not all Messages notifications.

Check Unknown Senders and Spam in iOS 26
Apple says Filter Spam for Messages is on by default in iOS 26. When Screen Unknown Senders is also enabled, messages from unknown senders or messages identified as spam may not produce notifications. They may appear under the Unknown Senders filter or in the Spam folder.
- Open Messages and look for the Unknown Senders filter or Spam folder.
- Review the missing message. If it is legitimate, mark the sender as known or move the message out of Spam using the available option.
- Send another test message from that sender and check whether it alerts normally.
This can affect a legitimate first text from a person, business, delivery service, appointment reminder, or short code. Filtering reduces unwanted interruptions, but it can make a notification problem look like a missing message.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether Scheduled Summary is delaying alerts
Scheduled Summary groups selected app notifications for delivery at scheduled times, so it is more likely to explain a late alert than one that never arrives. Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, then temporarily turn the summary off or remove Messages from its included apps. Keep Allow Notifications enabled for Messages if you want immediate alerts.

Check Apple Watch notification routing
If you wear an Apple Watch, the alert may be going to the watch while the iPhone stays quiet. Apple documents notifications as being delivered to either the watch or iPhone, not both; routing depends on the devices’ state and settings.
Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, tap My Watch > Notifications, and review Messages. Depending on the configuration, you may see options such as Mirror my iPhone, Allow Notifications, Send to Notification Centre, or Notifications Off. Also check whether the watch itself is in Silent mode.
Run a controlled test, then escalate if needed
- Leave or close Messages, then lock the iPhone.
- Ask someone to send a new message from another device.
- Check each result separately: sound, vibration, banner, Lock Screen, and Notification Center.
- Change one setting at a time and repeat the test so you can identify which change matters.
If settings and routing look correct, restart the iPhone and install the latest iOS update available for it. Test with another sender and note whether the issue affects all notifications or only Messages, and whether it affects iMessage, SMS/MMS, or both. If the messages themselves are absent, or a broader system problem persists after these checks, contact your carrier about message service or Apple Support about iPhone notifications.
