If the picture shows up on the TV but the sound does not, the cause is usually a mute setting, a volume setting, or the audio route, not a codec mismatch. Check both devices first. Then identify which method you are using, because whole-screen mirroring, AirPlay, Miracast, in-app casting, and wired connections each send audio differently and fail in different places.
Start with mute and volume on both devices
Work through these checks before changing any other setting. They take a minute and resolve a large share of silent-picture problems, although no official source quantifies that share.

- Turn up the volume on the source device (phone, tablet, or computer) and confirm it is not muted. Media volume and ringer volume can be separate, so raise the volume while a video is playing.
- Check the television or receiver. Make sure its volume is up and it is not muted, using the TV remote and, if you use one, the soundbar or AV receiver remote.
- Play a short clip from a different app. If that app has sound and the mirrored one does not, the problem is probably app-specific rather than a mirroring-wide failure.
- Confirm the TV is set to the input or receiver you expect. A TV can be showing the mirrored picture while its audio is routed to a speaker output you are not listening to.
Apple’s support guidance for AirPlay video puts the same test in plain terms: if audio is missing when streaming from an iOS device or Mac to an Apple TV, the volume must be up and not muted on both the iOS device and the television or receiver. Readers often call very different things “casting.” The method determines which audio path to check and which compatibility rules apply.

If you are unsure which method you are using, check the app or settings screen where you started the connection. A “Cast” or “Cast screen” option usually indicates a mirroring session, while an icon inside a single app usually indicates casting of that app’s media.
AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
For AirPlay video where the picture plays and the sound is missing, begin with the volume and mute checks above. If those are correct and the problem continues, Apple’s broader AirPlay guidance lists these items to verify:
- Power and proximity: both devices are on and close enough to connect.
- Software: both devices run current versions of their operating systems.
- Network: both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Permissions: AirPlay receiving is allowed on the TV or Apple TV.
- Restart: restart both the source device and the receiver.
These steps are Apple’s and apply to AirPlay. Other platforms use different menus and labels, so do not assume the same settings exist on an Android phone or a Windows laptop.

Miracast on Sony BRAVIA TVs
Sony describes its BRAVIA “Screen mirroring” feature as using Miracast. Its Help Guide says Wi-Fi devices such as phones and tablets must support Miracast, and it includes a caution that is worth taking seriously: “BRAVIA TV complies with the Miracast specification, but does not guarantee a successful connection with all devices.” That statement is from an older model and version guide, so confirm the wording and steps in the manual for your own TV model.
When the picture is unstable or sound drops in a Miracast session, Sony lists these as possible contributors:
- Other wireless LAN devices nearby, and microwave ovens, which can interfere with the connection.
- Distance between the devices and physical obstacles such as walls.
- Device configuration and radio conditions.
- Network congestion, including other screen-mirroring sessions running at the same time.
Practical responses are to move the phone or tablet closer to the TV, reduce obstacles, move away from microwaves or other wireless equipment, stop any other mirroring session, and try again. Results depend on the hardware, so if the connection never establishes with a particular device, the device may simply not be compatible with that TV.

Protected content and HDCP
Some paid content is protected with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). Sony states that some paid content may require the source device to meet HDCP 2.0, 2.1, or 2.2. Apple notes that films, television shows, and some streaming apps require an HDCP-compatible connection when a wired adapter is used.
Treat protection as a separate question from codec compatibility. If a single protected app shows the picture without sound while ordinary videos and other apps play normally, check that app’s supported playback route and device requirements. Do not conclude that content protection silenced the audio without an official source that describes that exact case.

Apple describes Digital AV adapters with HDMI for mirroring compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch devices to a second display. A USB-C Digital AV adapter with HDMI is the relevant option for newer devices with USB-C ports. It is not a universal fix. Apple’s guidance says VGA does not carry audio, and some protected video requires HDCP.

Before buying an adapter, match its connector to your device’s port, confirm the device model is listed in Apple’s guidance at https://support.apple.com/en-ie/108399, and check that the apps you need play protected video over the adapter. A wired connection also avoids the wireless interference and distance issues described above.
Google TV devices connected through an AV receiver or soundbar
When a Google TV streaming device sends audio through an AV receiver or soundbar, the audio chain becomes a likely cause of silence. Google’s troubleshooting article advises testing the streaming device directly connected to the TV. If that removes the problem, the audio route through the receiver or soundbar needs attention. Check that TV sound is routed back to the audio system through ARC or eARC, as appropriate for your ports, and review HDMI-CEC settings. This applies to Google TV devices in an HDMI chain with a receiver or soundbar. It does not establish that the same cause applies to every wireless mirroring failure.
Where codec mismatch fits
A codec mismatch, meaning the source sends an audio format the receiving path cannot decode, is a legitimate hypothesis. A secondary article, Robots.net’s “Why Is There No Sound When I Mirror My Phone to the TV?” at https://robots.net/tech/why-is-there-no-sound-when-i-mirror-my-phone-to-the-tv/, presents it as a frequent explanation alongside audio routing and protected content. However, the official manufacturer sources covering this topic do not state how often codec mismatch causes silent mirroring, and no reliable statistic exists to quote.
Consider a codec mismatch only after the mute, volume, method, wireless, and audio-route checks have failed, and only when a device manual or supported-format list for your exact source and TV or receiver names the format in question. A controlled comparison, such as playing the same file from the same source to the same receiver with and without the mirroring path, is the only way to test it directly. Without that evidence, changing codec settings is guesswork.
