Nkuzi Turns Lecture Slides Into an Offline Active-Recall Partner

Nkuzi is described as an offline study aid that tracks spoken explanations against lecture slides. Here is how its recall and self-check features work—and what its creator says they cannot yet guarantee.

Nkuzi is described by its creator as an offline study tool that turns lecture slides into a checklist, listens while a student explains the material aloud, and shows which points were missed. It also offers a “Check me” feature that compares the spoken explanation with slide text. The concept is useful for active recall, but the available account is the creator’s project write-up—not an independent evaluation—so its performance and compatibility claims should be treated as reported observations.

How Nkuzi is meant to help you study

The workflow is built around explaining a lecture with the slides closed. Rather than rereading notes, a student loads slides in PowerPoint, PDF, or Word format and talks through the topic. Nkuzi creates a checklist from the material and marks points as the student covers them.

The creator says the name “Nkuzi” means teaching in Igbo. The central idea is to help answer a practical question after an explanation: what did I leave out?

“What did I miss?”

Unticked checklist points make it easier to spot slide topics that were not mentioned. This indicates coverage, not mastery: a point can be discussed without being explained accurately.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

“Check me”

For a closer self-check, the app compares a spoken explanation with the wording on the slides. According to the creator, it can show relevant slide text beside a possible contradiction. That offers evidence to inspect rather than a guarantee that every explanation or correction is right.

Sharing a recap

The creator says a session recap can be pasted into WhatsApp. Although the project is discussed as a study aid that could support group discussion, the microphone input is intended to capture the explainer, not other people on a group call; only one explainer can use the system at a time.

What is reported to run locally

The creator describes Nkuzi as an all-local application, with no internet connection required for the setup they used. Their account names Gemma 4 E2B through Ollama for reasoning over slide content, Whisper base.en through faster-whisper for speech-to-text, bge-small embeddings through fastembed for matching checklist points, and a FastAPI backend with a React frontend. These are the components reported in the project article; their versions and current status have not been independently verified.

The creator also says, “Students’ recordings and lecture slides never leave the laptop.” That is a statement about the implementation they describe, not an independently audited privacy guarantee. The same article says the app ran on the author’s 2014 Intel Core i5-4310U laptop with 8 GB of RAM, integrated graphics, no GPU, and no internet. This is one reported setup, not a verified minimum specification or promise that it will work on every older laptop.

Reported speed—and what it means in practice

The project article describes two paths: checklist matching as the student speaks, and slower, on-demand work to create the checklist or check a possible contradiction. On the creator’s laptop, matching a chunk reportedly took about 0.3 seconds and speech transcription about 3–5 seconds. “Check me” reportedly took one to two minutes on that same machine.

Those timings are specific to the author’s setup and report. They are not benchmarks for other devices, and the longer wait for “Check me” matters if a student expects an immediate response during a live discussion.

Known limitations to consider

  • Accent and terminology: The creator reports that speech recognition struggled with Nigerian-accented English and medical vocabulary. Since the workflow depends on transcription, recognition errors can affect what the app thinks was said.
  • Coverage is not correctness: Checklist ticks reflect whether a point was discussed, not whether it was explained correctly. Use the slide text and your own subject knowledge to verify the substance.
  • One speaker at a time: The described system is for a single explainer, not simultaneous transcription of a whole group.
  • Some files need conversion: The creator says old .ppt files and scanned PDFs must be resaved in supported formats. Scanned documents may not provide the usable text the checklist workflow needs.
  • Speech clarity affects results: The creator recommends earphones with a microphone for clearer speech. This is a general setup suggestion, not a tested hardware recommendation.

How much evidence is there for its accuracy?

The creator reports adding safeguards after early model failures: checklist wording grounded in lines from the slides, validation that quoted correction text exists on a slide, a second yes-or-no check, a warning when speech is too garbled, and manual override controls. These measures address plausible failure modes, but they do not establish a general accuracy or safety guarantee.

The same account reports a four-out-of-four result on one contradiction test using Gemma 4 E2B. That is a small, author-run test rather than broad validation across topics, speakers, accents, or devices.

The only user trial described is a friend named Nnia explaining a COPD lecture on a phone connected over Wi-Fi to the creator’s laptop. Nnia reportedly praised the tool for active recall and studying alone, while suggesting it needed more work. This single reported trial is encouraging feedback, not evidence of performance across a larger student group.

Availability and planned features

The creator’s article links to a GitHub project and says it is MIT licensed. It does not establish whether there is a current release package, a simple installer, a supported operating-system list, or verified minimum hardware requirements. Readers should check the project’s current instructions before assuming setup will be straightforward.

Features the creator lists as future work include speech-recognition fine-tuning for African-accented clinical speech, topic history for study groups, possible Pidgin or Igbo explanations, and a one-click installer. AfriSpeech-200 is mentioned as a possible resource for future improvement. These are plans, not features established as available.

Who might find Nkuzi useful?

Nkuzi’s described approach may suit a student who wants to rehearse lecture material aloud, use their own slides, and review missed points without relying on a cloud-based tutor. It is less suited to someone who needs dependable transcription of a particular accent or technical vocabulary, immediate contradiction checks, or simultaneous group transcription. The project account provides a promising example of an offline study workflow, but the described tests are too limited to settle those questions for every learner.
