If you want Nintendo’s announced The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, you need a Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists the game as a Switch 2 exclusive, with a November 5, 2026 release date. If you already own an original Switch, it can still play compatible Switch games on Switch 2, including the original Tears of the Kingdom; the newer Switch 2 Editions and their added features are a separate matter.
Which console do you need for the next announced Zelda?
Nintendo’s U.S. listing and announcement identify The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and give its release date as November 5, 2026. The listing describes overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music and updated controls; those are Nintendo’s product descriptions, not independent performance findings. Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time listing also estimates a 27 GB download and lists single-system play for one player. Nintendo’s announcement likewise calls it a Switch 2 exclusive.

That is the clear deciding factor if your purchase is specifically for the announced upcoming game: an original Switch will not run it. Nintendo’s cited announcement establishes this release, not a broader slate of future Zelda games or the platforms for unannounced titles.

| Question | What Nintendo says | What it means for a Zelda player |
|---|---|---|
| Will Switch 2 play original Switch games? | It is compatible with many Switch products and features. Compatible physical and digital games work, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible; some receive free updates or paid upgrades. Nintendo Support | You can carry a compatible existing library forward, but check a specific game rather than assuming every title behaves identically. |
| Can I play the original Tears of the Kingdom? | Nintendo lists the Switch version as supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Switch. Nintendo’s game listing | You do not need the Switch 2 Edition just to play the original Switch release on Switch 2. |
| What does the Switch 2 Edition add? | The Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition lists higher resolution, improved frame rates, HDR, faster loading and ZELDA NOTES, and is playable only on Switch 2. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition page | Choose the edition if you want those enhanced and app-linked features; they are not part of the original Switch experience. |
What happens to your existing Zelda games and save data?
Nintendo says save data from the Switch versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom can be carried over to their Switch 2 Editions. Nintendo’s FAQ also says those editions support cloud save data on Switch 2. For Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo cautions that a second save file created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Switch game. See the Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ and the game’s edition details.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
There is an edition distinction when moving a game card, too: Nintendo says putting a Switch 2 Edition card into an original Switch plays the Switch version, without the Switch 2 Edition’s additional content and features. The Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition does not bundle its Expansion Pass DLC; that DLC is separate and requires the full game. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition FAQ
How to choose based on your plans
- Buy Switch 2 if you want to play the announced Ocarina of Time release, or want the Switch 2 Editions’ listed enhancements for games such as Tears of the Kingdom.
- Keep using your original Switch if you are focused on games you already own that are available for that system and do not need the announced Switch 2 exclusive. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for each title you plan to play on Switch 2.
- If you are deciding whether to upgrade, compare current local console prices, bundles and availability, then weigh that cost against the exclusive and enhancements you actually want. Prices and stock are not established here, so there is no reliable price-based winner.
What is—and is not—known about future Zelda releases
The confirmed platform distinction in Nintendo’s cited information is specific: Ocarina of Time is announced for Switch 2 only. The information does not confirm other upcoming Zelda games or say whether unannounced releases will work on the original Switch. Treat claims about a wider future lineup as speculation unless Nintendo announces those games and platforms.
