1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor TV gaming, PS5 is a home console built to connect to a television or monitor, while most Nintendo Switch models can move between TV and portable play. The details depend on which Switch you mean: Switch Lite cannot connect to a TV, the original Switch and Switch OLED have lower TV-output capabilities than Switch 2, and Switch 2 needs its own dock. Your best fit depends more on the games you want, portability, physical discs and your TV than on headline output numbers alone.
Can you play a Nintendo Switch on a TV?
Yes, if you have an original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED or Switch 2. These models support TV play through a dock. Nintendo’s TV-mode guidance describes placing the console in its dock to show the game on a television. Switch Lite is different: it is handheld-only and does not support TV mode, as Nintendo explains in its Switch Lite information.

Switch 2 also supports handheld and tabletop play, but it uses a different dock from the first-generation Switch. Nintendo says the original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2; check its compatibility information before reusing accessories.
How Switch and PS5 TV output compare
Output specifications describe what a system can send to a display; they do not guarantee that every game renders at the highest resolution or frame rate. The television and, in some cases, the game must support the feature too.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

| System | TV use | Published TV output or display support | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED | Docked TV play; also portable play | Not stated in the cited Switch 2 specifications; those figures do not apply to these models. | Switch Lite has no TV mode. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | TV, tabletop and handheld modes | Up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, or 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440, according to Nintendo’s 2025 technical specifications. | These are output ceilings, not guarantees for every game; compatible game and TV support are needed. |
| PlayStation 5 | Connects to a TV or monitor by HDMI | Sony lists support for 4K 120 Hz TVs, 8K TVs and VRR in its hardware specifications. | 120 Hz and VRR use depend on the connected display and game; actual rendering varies by game. |
Switch 2 is not the original Switch at higher resolution
Nintendo’s Switch 2 figures separate resolution and refresh rate: the listed maximum 4K output is 60 fps, while 120 fps is listed for 1080p and 1440p. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement says the dock can output up to 4K and play games at up to 120 fps; read that alongside the more specific resolution-and-frame-rate table, not as a promise of 4K at 120 fps. Neither figure should be attributed to the original Switch or Switch OLED.
PS5 features require a compatible setup
Sony documents settings for 4K, 120 Hz, HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) in its PS5 video output guide. A feature only helps if the television supports it, and 120 Hz or VRR also depends on the game. A PS5’s supported output modes are not a statement that every game renders at 4K or runs at 120 frames per second.

Which console fits your TV gaming?
Choose around where you play
- Choose a dockable Switch model if you want to play on a TV and also take the same system into handheld or tabletop use. Switch Lite is not an option for TV play.
- Choose PS5 if the console will stay connected to a television or monitor and portable play is not a requirement.
Start with the games and library you care about
Make a shortlist of specific games before comparing platforms. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, although some may have errors or lose functionality; see its PS4 game compatibility guidance. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible; consult its Switch 2 compatibility information. Neither platform’s library is wholly interchangeable with the other’s.
Match display features to your current TV
A basic HDMI television can be used for TV play. Higher resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR only matter if both the console setup and the game support them. If you are choosing between systems, compare their capabilities with the TV you already own; these specifications alone are not a reason to buy a new TV.

Check physical media before buying a PS5
Sony’s cited PS5 specifications list an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for the disc-drive configuration. Its Digital Edition has no optical disc support in the cited launch guidance. That distinction matters if you want to use physical PS4 or PS5 games or watch UHD Blu-ray discs. Confirm the exact current model and whether a drive is included or attached before purchase, because retail configurations can differ.

Official output and compatibility information can help you check whether a system suits your TV and library, but it is not a same-game performance comparison. It does not establish which console runs a particular game at a higher resolution or frame rate, loads it faster or presents better visuals. Those claims require reliable testing of the same game under comparable conditions.
