Basketball in Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Swing the controller vertically to dribble or move, press X to pass, and hold ZR while raising the Joy-Con and flicking forward to shoot. Defense uses an upward block gesture and a cross-body swipe for a steal attempt.
Basketball arrived in version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. The guide below explains the complete beginner control set, timing advice, practice drills, compatible hardware, online requirements, and fixes for common input problems.

What you need to play Basketball
Basketball is a mode inside Nintendo Switch Sports, not a separate free game. Nintendo added it in version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024. Install that update before expecting the mode or its Internet features to appear.
Nintendo lists Basketball in three play categories: Play Globally, Play Locally, and Play with Friends. Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership as well as the game update. Local play does not remove the controller requirements.

Supported hardware and modes
| Setup | Basketball support | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con | Supported | Nintendo supports paired or single Joy-Con arrangements depending on the sport and activity. |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Not supported | The Pro Controller cannot be used for Nintendo Switch Sports motion activities. |
| TV Mode | Supported and recommended | Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience and adequate movement space. |
| Handheld Mode | Not supported | The game does not provide a handheld control scheme for this activity. |
| Internet play | Supported after version 1.5.0 | Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features. |
An additional pair of Joy-Con controllers may help a household that needs more compatible controllers, but Nintendo does not state that every Basketball mode requires an extra pair. Use the controllers already supported by your selected activity and player count.
Basketball controls at a glance
The action mapping below follows the Game8 control guide. Nintendo’s official compatibility information confirms the supported controller context but does not publish a detailed Basketball button table. Game8 also shows occasional alternate button renderings, so treat the directional-button alternatives as guide-specific rather than a universal Nintendo layout.
| Action | Input | Beginner execution |
|---|---|---|
| Dribble or move | Swing the Joy-Con vertically | Use comfortable up-and-down swings; larger, slower swings can move at the same speed as smaller, faster ones. |
| Shoot | Hold ZR, raise the Joy-Con beside your head, then flick forward | Keep the controller steady and time the forward flick near the top of your jump. |
| Pass | Press X | Pass toward a teammate who is not screened by a defender. |
| Signal for a pass | Press A | Use the signal when a teammate has possession and you are open. |
| Block | Raise and point the Joy-Con upward | Start the motion before the shooter releases; the blocking jump takes time. |
| Steal | Swipe the Joy-Con across your body | Attempt it selectively because a miss can leave you behind the attacker. |
| Fake out | Move the Joy-Con up and down slowly while preparing to shoot | The gesture is sensitive; moving too quickly can register as a shot. |
| Three-Point mode: grab or hold the ball | Hold ZR or ZL while pointing down | This input is specific to the three-point activity described by the Game8 guide. |
Learn the controls with a short practice routine
A repeatable sequence is more useful than trying to memorize every gesture at once. Practice in a quiet area before entering an online match.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Calibrate your stance. Stand where you can extend both arms without hitting furniture, pets, or another player. Put the Joy-Con wrist strap on before starting.
- Repeat the movement gesture. Make several relaxed vertical swings and watch how much movement produces a comfortable dribble or change of direction. Avoid whipping the controller.
- Add a pass. After a few dribbles, press the pass button toward an open teammate. Focus on recognizing space before pressing rather than passing immediately after receiving the ball.
- Rehearse the shot sequence. Coordinate the ZR hold, the raise beside your head, and the forward flick as one smooth action. Begin slowly, then increase speed only when the input is reliable.
- Practice timing. Try releasing the flick around the peak of your jump. Keep the Joy-Con stable during the raise so an unintended movement does not replace the shot.
- Finish with defense. Have a partner or computer attack while you practice an early block motion and one carefully chosen steal attempt.
Beginner offense tips
Use controlled dribbling rather than large swings
Game8 notes that larger, slower vertical swings can move you at the same speed as smaller, faster ones. That makes comfort more important than exaggerated arm speed. Keep the motion compact enough to maintain balance and reserve larger movements for when you genuinely need to change direction.

Pass before a defender screens the lane
A teammate is a useful passing target only while the lane is clear. Look for a player who is not directly screened by a defender, then make the pass. If the defender has already stepped between you and the teammate, continue moving or wait for a better angle instead of forcing the ball.
Coordinate the entire shot motion
Successful shooting depends on the order of the actions, not just the button hold. Start holding the assigned shoulder button, raise the Joy-Con beside your head, and make a clean forward flick. Game8 recommends timing the flick near the top of the jump and keeping the controller steady. A rushed raise or a loose wrist can make the game interpret the movement inconsistently.
Use the pass signal to show availability
When a teammate has possession and you are open, signal for the pass instead of standing silently. Move into space first, then signal so the passer can identify a useful target. The signal is most valuable when your path is clear and you can immediately continue the play.
Do not overuse the fake-out gesture
The slow up-and-down fake is sensitive. If you perform it too quickly while preparing a shot, the game may register a real shot. Use a deliberately small rhythm and keep the controller under control. If the defense is already close, a genuine pass or change of direction is safer than a risky fake.

Defensive controls and decision-making
Block by anticipating the release
The upward block motion is not an instant shield. The guide warns that the jump takes time, so watch the attacker’s setup and begin the motion before the shot is released. Blocking directly in front of the shooter is more reliable than reacting after the ball is already moving.
Attempt steals selectively
The cross-body swipe can interrupt an opponent, but a failed attempt may let that player dash past you. Use it when the attacker has exposed the ball or is moving predictably. If you are the last defender, staying in position is usually less costly than making a speculative swipe.
Recover after a missed attempt
When a steal misses, immediately turn your attention to the attacker’s route and the nearest teammate. Do not repeat the swipe just because the first one failed; the guide’s warning about being dashed past makes recovery more important than a second gamble.
Three-Point mode practice
Three-Point mode changes the objective from ordinary team possessions to repeated long-range attempts. The Game8 guide reports holding ZR or ZL while pointing downward to grab or hold the ball. Because this is a mode-specific input, confirm the on-screen prompt if your layout displays a different shoulder-button label.

Use this mode to build a consistent shot rhythm: settle your stance, establish the hold, raise the Joy-Con the same way each time, and flick at a repeatable point in the jump. The recommendation to use three-point modes for long-shot practice comes from the third-party guide, not from an official Nintendo training statement.

Play Locally
Choose Play Locally when everyone is in the same room. It is useful for learning the timing because you can stop between possessions, adjust the amount of space around each player, and repeat a motion without worrying about an online connection.
Play with Friends
Use Play with Friends for a private session with people you know. Make sure each participant has a compatible Joy-Con arrangement. If someone is holding a Pro Controller or trying to use the console in handheld mode, switch to a supported setup before troubleshooting the game.

Troubleshooting common input problems
The game does not detect a shot
- Confirm that the shoulder button is held before raising the Joy-Con.
- Raise the controller beside your head rather than starting with it already in front of you.
- Make one clear forward flick instead of several short movements.
- Keep the Joy-Con steady during the raise and try timing the flick near the jump’s peak.
A fake registers as a shot
Slow the up-and-down preparation movement. The fake-out gesture is sensitive, and a fast or exaggerated motion can be interpreted as the actual shooting action.
Movement feels inconsistent
- Use the wrist strap and hold the Joy-Con securely.
- Reduce the size and speed of your swings; the guide indicates that large, slow movements can be just as effective as small, fast ones.
- Check that no one is standing close enough to restrict your arm motion.
- Pause and reconnect or re-pair the Joy-Con if other motion-controlled activities also fail to respond.
Basketball or online play is unavailable
- Verify that the console has installed version 1.5.0 or later.
- For Internet features, confirm an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Use TV Mode with a supported Joy-Con setup; Handheld Mode and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not supported by Nintendo Switch Sports.
Play safely and protect your equipment
Nintendo’s game guidance tells players to stay aware of their surroundings, wear the wrist straps, and leave adequate room. Clear the area before beginning, especially when practicing the upward block and forward shooting motions. Keep the Joy-Con attached to your wrist even during short practice sessions, and stop if another person or object enters your movement zone.
A simple match checklist
- Game updated to version 1.5.0 or later.
- Compatible Joy-Con connected and wrist strap secured.
- TV Mode selected with enough clear floor space.
- For online play, Nintendo Switch Online membership active.
- Passing target identified before you press the pass button.
- Shooting motion practiced slowly before increasing speed.
- Blocks started before the opponent releases the shot.
- Steals attempted only when the risk of being beaten is low.
Once those habits are automatic, Basketball becomes easier to read: use controlled movement to create space, pass when a teammate is genuinely open, execute the three-part shot motion with consistent timing, and defend patiently instead of swiping at every possession.
