The free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app adds play-time schedules, gameplay activity reports and remote settings for a linked Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Some content and communication restrictions can also be set on the console, but daily time limits, activity history and Switch 2 GameChat controls require the app. The instructions and settings below reflect Nintendo’s US support information available October 7, 2026.
What can the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app do?
The app links a parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account to a console. It can show which games were played and for how long, send notifications when games are downloaded, and let caregivers set age-based restrictions or customize them. Depending on the console and settings, restrictions cover rated software, communication with others, user-generated content, and certain purchases or online features. Nintendo also allows two parents or guardians to share controls and use their own devices to view activity and set limits.
For Switch 2, the app also manages GameChat settings. These include which friends a child can chat with, video-chat restrictions, camera field-of-view options, and a history of who the child chatted with and for how long. Nintendo says children under 16 and supervised users need the linked app and additional GameChat settings configured.
Do you need the app to set parental controls?
No. Some restrictions, including content and communication controls, can be set directly on a Switch or Switch 2. The app is needed for play-time limits and gameplay activity history, and for Switch 2 GameChat controls. Nintendo describes the app as providing the most extensive set of options. On Switch, console controls also include social-media posting restrictions; Switch 2 does not support social-media posting.

How do I set a time limit on Nintendo Switch?
Use the app to set a daily play duration, or choose “Vary by Day” to use different limits on different days. Nintendo’s documented daily setting ranges from no limit to six hours. You can also extend the current day’s allowance or turn the limit off for that day.

Choose what happens when time runs out: with “Suspend Play When Time’s Up” enabled, the software stops; with it disabled, the console displays a notification but the game can remain playable. This is a parent-managed setting, not an unoverrideable lock: a parent with the PIN can add time or temporarily disable the alarms or suspension.
Can I set a bedtime on Nintendo Switch?
Yes. In the app, set a bedtime between 4:00 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. and, if desired, a morning restart time between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. If both a daily play-time limit and bedtime are active, the earlier one takes precedence. Nintendo documents these settings for Switch and Switch 2.

How do I set parental controls on Nintendo Switch?
- Prepare an account and phone. A parent or guardian aged 18 or older needs a Nintendo Account. Install the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on an iOS or Android device.
- Link the console. Follow the app’s and console’s linking prompts for the Switch or Switch 2 you want to manage. Nintendo provides separate setup guidance for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2; follow the on-screen instructions for your system rather than assuming menu labels are identical.
- Choose restrictions. In the app’s Parental Controls area, select an age-based preset or customize restrictions for content, communication and other supported features.
- Set schedules and expiry behavior. Add a daily limit or bedtime if needed, then decide whether reaching the limit suspends play or only shows a notification.
- Configure Switch 2 GameChat if relevant. Set the applicable GameChat permissions in the app, including additional settings for children under 16 and supervised users.
- Review shared-console effects. Nintendo says many Switch 2 restrictions apply system-wide rather than separately to each user. If children of different ages share the console, check the settings on that console and choose restrictions with the youngest player in mind.
What is different about Switch and Switch 2 parental controls?
Both consoles work with the smart-device app, and some controls can be set on either console itself. The clearest app-only differences are time limits, gameplay activity, bedtime and morning start time; Switch 2 adds app-managed GameChat settings. Switch supports social-media posting restrictions, while Switch 2 does not support social-media posting. For Switch 2, Nintendo warns that many restrictions are system-wide, so a setting may affect everyone using a shared console.

Yes. Nintendo Support says app version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026, added shared parental controls so two parents or guardians can monitor a child’s system using their respective devices. See Nintendo’s app download and update information for the current app details.
