Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: Is It Worth It for N64 Games?

Expansion Pack can be worthwhile if you want multiple games from Nintendo’s current N64 selection or use its other bundled benefits. Check the catalog and compare the U.S. annual upgrade cost before subscribing.

Is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack worth it for N64 games? For U.S. players who want several games in Nintendo’s current N64 selection—or will also use its other classic-game libraries, select DLC, or online features—the $49.99 annual individual plan can make sense. If you only want one or two N64 titles and will leave the other additions unused, the $30 annual upgrade over standard Nintendo Switch Online is harder to justify. Check Nintendo’s current catalog for your must-play games before subscribing: the service includes a curated selection, not every N64 release.

What does Expansion Pack add for N64 players?

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack includes access to Nintendo’s selection of Nintendo 64 games, alongside the standard Nintendo Switch Online benefits. An active Expansion Pack membership is required to access the N64 collection. Nintendo does not promise a complete N64 library, and the selection can change, so verify that the games you want are listed on Nintendo’s N64 Classics page before you decide.

Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes for the collection. Its product page also lists single-system play for one to four players and online play for two to four. Nintendo notes that game behavior and presentation may differ from the original N64 versions, so do not assume every title will look or play exactly as it did on original hardware.

How much does it cost in the U.S.?

Nintendo’s current U.S. overview lists annual prices of $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack membership and $79.99 for a family membership covering up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Standard Nintendo Switch Online costs $19.99 annually for an individual or $34.99 for a family plan. That makes the annual difference $30 for an individual plan or $45 for a family plan. These are U.S. prices; Nintendo says membership pricing depends on country and duration, so check your local Nintendo Account storefront outside the U.S.

When is the N64 upgrade worth paying for?

You want several games in the current N64 selection

If multiple titles you genuinely expect to play are available, the annual membership may be worthwhile. The key is to judge the specific catalog, not the size of the historical N64 library: Nintendo offers a selection, and access depends on keeping the membership active.

You will use more than the N64 collection

Expansion Pack also adds select Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games, plus certain downloadable content. Nintendo names Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion among the included DLC. DLC access requires the base game and an active membership; if membership lapses, access pauses. These additions can improve the value if you already play those games or want the other classic libraries.

You are already paying for standard Nintendo Switch Online

If you currently have the standard individual plan, the relevant comparison is the $30 annual difference—not the full $49.99 Expansion Pack price. For a family plan, compare the $45 annual difference. Consider whether the N64 catalog and the other additions are worth that upgrade cost for the accounts using the plan.

You have a Switch 2

Switch 2 owners also receive access to select Nintendo GameCube Classics and certain Switch 2 edition upgrades through Expansion Pack. Those platform-specific benefits can matter to a Switch 2 owner, but they should not influence the decision if you only have a Switch or Switch Lite. Nintendo described the GameCube distinction in its September 2025 update announcement.

Do you need the N64 controller?

No. Nintendo lists the Nintendo 64 Controller as a supported controller option on Switch 2, but says it is optional. You can consider Expansion Pack without treating the accessory as a required extra purchase. If you want the original-style control layout, check Nintendo’s N64 Classics product page for current compatibility information.

How to make the decision

  1. Check the current N64 list. Open Nintendo’s N64 Classics page and confirm your specific must-play titles are available.
  2. Choose the right price comparison. In the U.S., compare $49.99 with $19.99 for an individual annual plan, or $79.99 with $34.99 for a family annual plan. If you already have standard service, focus on the $30 or $45 difference.
  3. Count only benefits you expect to use. Consider the other classic libraries and included DLC only if they are relevant to your games and hardware.
  4. Decide whether ongoing access suits you. The N64 collection requires an active membership; it is not a one-time purchase of individual games.

Verdict: worth it for a broader use case, not just the label

Expansion Pack is easiest to recommend when several games in the current N64 selection appeal to you, or when you will also use its other included benefits. If one or two N64 games are your sole reason to subscribe, check their availability and weigh them against the annual upgrade cost before committing.
