What are the hardware differences?
The biggest practical differences are screen type and size, storage, battery estimate, and whether the system supports TV play. Nintendo’s battery figures are estimates that vary by game, not guaranteed runtimes or independent test results.

Which model should you buy?
Buy Switch 2 for the current generation
Pick Switch 2 if access to Switch 2 games and newer hardware matters most. It has the largest built-in display and the most internal storage in this comparison, but it carries the highest listed system MSRP and Nintendo’s shortest stated battery estimate range.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Buy Switch Lite only if handheld-only fits
Lite is the least expensive listed system and the most compact option, but its handheld-only design is a real constraint. Before choosing it, confirm that the games you care about support handheld mode; some games may require separate compatible controllers, which may also need a charging solution.

Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the hardware differs. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for any game that is central to the purchase rather than assuming the entire original library works without qualification. Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information
Some older accessories also have limits. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console; charging them requires a Switch console or compatible charging accessory. The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and charge through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. Verify compatibility for a specific accessory and use case.
How does storage expansion work?
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion, up to 2 TB. A conventional microSD card cannot expand Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo says conventional cards can be used to view or copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. The older Switch models have different storage arrangements, so do not buy an expansion card for Switch 2 without checking that it is microSD Express. What else should you budget for?
Nintendo says online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership sold separately, subject to terms and availability. That membership is separate from the console’s hardware price; whether you need it depends on the online features you plan to use. Nintendo Switch family comparison
