A Nintendo Switch game card is inserted into the console to play; a download card gives you a 16-digit code that you redeem in Nintendo eShop, then download the game. Nintendo says the game content is the same in physical and digital versions. The difference is how you receive, store, switch between, and share access to the game.
What does each purchase include?
Physical game card
A physical game-card purchase gives you a removable card to insert into the Switch you want to play on. Check the packaging: some games require additional downloaded data, so a card does not always mean the whole game is ready to play without a download.

Download card or code
A download card contains a 16-digit code, not a playable game card. On the console, open Nintendo eShop, choose “Redeem Code,” enter the code, and download the game. You need an internet connection to redeem it and enough console storage for the download. Nintendo’s digital-games guidance explains code redemption and storage.
Direct digital purchase
If you buy a game directly in eShop, Nintendo sends it to the console linked to the purchasing account; you do not need a retailer’s download card. Digital access is associated with the Nintendo Account that bought the game.

How do game cards and download codes compare?
| What matters | Physical game card | Download code or digital game |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | A removable game card, unless the package explicitly says otherwise. | A code to redeem, or a digital purchase delivered through eShop; either way, the game is downloaded. |
| Starting play | Insert the card. Some titles also require a download. | Redeem the code or complete the eShop purchase, then download the title. |
| Changing games | Swap cards to play another card-based title. | Launch installed games without swapping cards. |
| Using another console | Insert the card into the console you want to use. | Access follows Nintendo Account and console rules, including current virtual-game-card and online-license settings. |
| Storage | Some games need additional downloaded data. | The game is stored on the console; storage needs vary by title. |
| Save progress | Save data is generally tied to the selected user and system memory, not the card. | The same save-data rule applies when the same user plays the title digitally. |
Nintendo states that “the game content is the same no matter whether you buy the physical or digital version.” Check the listing for the specific title, since editions, bonuses, downloadable content, and platform versions can differ.
Do you have to download a physical game?
Not always, but some physical Switch games require additional data. In certain cases, only part of the game is available from the card until that data is downloaded. Nintendo says any extra-storage requirement applies to both physical and digital versions of the game; check the game packaging or eShop listing for the stated requirement.

Digital game sizes vary and may grow with updates. Nintendo says you can delete or archive digital games to free space and redownload them later; removing a digital game does not remove its save data from the console. If you need more space, check which microSD card type your console accepts before buying one. Nintendo’s UK guidance specifies that Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only, so do not assume original Switch storage advice applies to Switch 2.

Where is save data stored?
Nintendo Support says, “Save data is stored in the System Memory, and for the most part, it is associated to the individual user.” With the same user selected, progress is not affected by whether you play from a card or a download. The card itself does not hold your save. To move progress between consoles, use Nintendo’s transfer or cloud-save options where supported. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ for save-data details.

Can you share a game with another Switch?
Physical cards
You can use a physical game card on another console by inserting it there. The card is the item that provides access to the game, so you cannot play that copy on two consoles at once while the card is elsewhere.
Digital games
A redeemed code is not a transferable game card: the digital entitlement belongs to the Nintendo Account that bought it. Nintendo’s current guidance describes sharing digital games through virtual game cards with members of a Nintendo Account family group, alongside online-license and console settings. The available setup depends on the accounts and consoles involved; consult Nintendo’s multi-console instructions rather than treating a digital purchase as freely lendable.

Is a Switch 2 Game-Key Card the same thing?
No. A Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card is a separate format, not an original Switch game card and not a boxed download code. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A that the card stores a key to activate the software rather than the full game data. The first download requires internet access; later play does not, but the Game-Key Card must be inserted. This explanation applies to Switch 2 Game-Key Cards, not ordinary original Switch game cards or every boxed product containing a code.

Which format should you choose?
- Choose a physical card if you prefer a removable item you can move between consoles, or value card-based sharing.
- Choose a download code or direct digital purchase if you want to switch between installed games without swapping cards and are comfortable with downloads, storage use, and account-based access.
- Check the specific title first if avoiding downloads or managing limited storage is important; a physical version can still need extra data.
