Nintendo Switch Auto-Brightness automatically adjusts the console’s screen brightness in response to ambient light. It is available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED, but not Nintendo Switch Lite. You can toggle it from Quick Settings or System Settings; the screen brightness controls apply in handheld and tabletop modes.
What Auto-Brightness does
When enabled, the console uses a sensor to adjust screen brightness as surrounding light conditions change. It does not mean the Switch controls a television’s brightness. Nintendo documents this feature for the console screen, whose brightness settings are available in handheld and tabletop modes. Nintendo’s support instructions describe the adjustment based on ambient conditions.

Why the screen may change brightness by itself
If the screen brightness shifts automatically, check whether Auto-Brightness is enabled. The console uses a sensor for this feature, so keep the sensor unobstructed. Its position differs on the OLED model, so consult model-specific guidance rather than assuming one location applies to every console. Nintendo Japan notes both the sensor and the need not to cover it in its brightness support guidance.

What the feature does not establish
Nintendo’s official guidance explains automatic adjustment based on ambient conditions, but does not quantify battery savings, response time, or comfort improvements. Auto-Brightness should therefore be understood as a convenience for changing screen output—not as a guaranteed battery-life increase, eye-comfort benefit, or assurance of better visibility outdoors.
