The stock Switch operating system is a closed console interface. To get a desktop, browser, terminal, or Android apps, you need a Switch capable of booting alternative software such as Switchroot Linux or Switchroot Android.
That distinction matters. An unmodified Switch is mainly a game console with limited PC connectivity. A modified Switch can become an ARM-based Linux computer, Android tablet, media player, emulation system, or remote-desktop terminal—but it will not become a Windows laptop or a Steam Deck equivalent.

What the Switch can do without modification
On a normal Switch, Nintendo provides only a narrow PC-facing workflow. You can copy screenshots and videos to a computer over USB by opening:
HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management → Manage Screenshots and Videos → Copy to a PC via a USB connection
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
This transfers media; it does not expose the Switch as a USB storage device or let you browse its internal filesystem like a Windows or Linux computer.
You can also manage installed software and move downloadable games between internal storage and the microSD card through:
HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management → Move Data Between Console/microSD Card

The hardware is usable, but modest
The original Switch family is based on NVIDIA’s ARM-based Tegra platform. Its specifications are adequate for a lightweight Linux or Android setup, but far below those of current x86-64 handheld PCs.
| Model | Display | Internal storage | Other relevant hardware |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch | 6.2-inch, 1280×720 LCD | 32 GB, partly reserved for the system | 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB-C |
| Switch OLED | 7-inch, 1280×720 OLED | 64 GB | Same general Tegra-based platform |
| Switch Lite | 5.5-inch, 1280×720 LCD | Built-in storage varies by software configuration | USB-C connector specified by Nintendo for charging |
All models accept microSDHC or microSDXC cards up to 2 TB. Nintendo rates the original Switch for approximately 4.5 to 9 hours of battery life depending on the game and usage. Running a desktop environment, video playback, or an overclocked Android installation can reduce that considerably.

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Because the processor is ARM-based, software must have an ARM-compatible build. Ordinary Windows applications and x86-64 Linux programs do not simply install. This is a processor and platform limitation, not a driver problem.

1. Keep Horizon and use the Switch as a PC accessory
This is the only completely supported option. You can transfer captures, manage storage, connect Bluetooth audio, use Wi-Fi, and attach compatible accessories through the dock’s USB ports. It is useful alongside a computer, but it does not provide a desktop, file manager, general-purpose browser, or terminal.
2. Install Switchroot Android
Switchroot Android is the more convenient choice if the goal is a tablet-like device rather than a traditional desktop. Current Switchroot Android releases include Android 14 and Android 15, based on LineageOS 21 and 22.2. The project lists support for the original V1 and V2 consoles, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED.
Android is particularly practical for:
- Web browsing and Android productivity apps
- Video streaming and media playback
- Cloud gaming
- Remote desktop access to a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer
- Bluetooth keyboards and mice
- Docked media-center use
The Switch Configuration app exposes settings for controller remapping, right-stick mouse control, and performance profiles. Android 14 and 15 also gained documented overclocking support in the April 6, 2025 update. Overclocking can improve responsiveness, but it also raises heat and power consumption and can cause instability.
Android 14 and 15 use a dynamic partition layout. A manual installation involves partitions such as boot, recovery, dtb, misc, cache, super, and userdata; the documented super partition is 5952 MiB. A standard Android phone image is not interchangeable with the Switchroot image.
3. Install Switchroot Linux
Switchroot’s L4T Linux is the closest the Switch gets to a real portable PC. Available distributions include Ubuntu Noble 24.04, Ubuntu Jammy 22.04, older Ubuntu releases, Fedora variants, and Lakka.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
The current Ubuntu Noble guide identifies version 5.1.2, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and requires Hekate 6.0.6 or newer. It offers KDE Plasma and Ubuntu Unity images; the GNOME image is delayed because of upstream bugs.
With Linux installed, the Switch can provide:
- A graphical desktop and terminal
- Firefox or a Chromium-based browser
- LibreOffice and other ARM Linux applications
- SSH, development tools, and scripting environments
- Media playback through compatible hardware-accelerated players
- Flatpak applications and emulators
- External-display support through the dock or compatible USB-C display adapters
- Joy-Con and Pro Controller input
For video, Switchroot documents hardware-accelerated support in applications such as MPV, VLC, and FFmpeg-based players. This matters because software-only decoding can make playback stutter and drain the battery quickly.
What you need before installing another operating system
The most important question is whether the console can launch custom boot software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- First-generation unpatched V1 Switch: can use the
fusee-geleebootROM vulnerability. - Patched V1, V2, OLED, and Switch Lite: generally require a hardware modchip.
Switchroot Android may support all Switch models as an operating-system build, but that does not mean every model can boot it without hardware modification.
For the unpatched V1 RCM method, the usual hardware and sequence are:
- A USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot inject a payload.
- An RCM jig placed in the right Joy-Con rail.
- Hold Volume Up + Power.
- Inject a payload such as Hekate from a computer or compatible device.
A microSD card of at least 128 GB is sensible for a multi-OS setup. An emuMMC-based configuration can consume up to 64 GB before adding Linux, Android, games, and user files. A smaller card can work with a sysCFW setup, but it provides less separation between custom firmware and the normal system environment.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Use a reputable U3/A2 card. Slow, counterfeit, or failing cards are a common cause of boot errors and corrupted filesystems.
Linux installation outline
The exact files and partition sizes change between releases, so use the current Switchroot guide rather than an old video. The broad Ubuntu Noble process is:
- Back up the microSD card’s FAT32 files, raw emuMMC data, and any Android installation.
- Boot Hekate.
- Open Hekate → Tools → Partition SD Card.
- Use Hekate → Tools → USB Tools to mount the card to the computer.
- Extract the Linux image directly to the FAT32 partition.
- Safely eject or unmount the card from the computer.
- Return to Hekate → Tools → Partition SD Card → Flash Linux.
- Dump controller data through Hekate → Nyx Options → Dump Joy-Con BT.
- Start Linux from Hekate → More Configs.
Partitioning is destructive. It can erase the existing microSD layout, including an emuMMC or Android installation. Do not begin until the backups have been checked and the card contents are no longer needed in their current form.
After Ubuntu starts, the documented update command is:
sudo apt update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can also use the desktop Software Updater or, on KDE Plasma, Discover Software Center.
Limitations you will notice quickly
It is not a Windows PC
The Switch cannot natively run Windows desktop applications. It also cannot directly run normal x86-64 Steam games. ARM-compatible Linux applications work best; x86 software would require emulation or remote access to another computer, with the expected performance penalty.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Performance is limited
The Tegra X1 platform is suitable for a lightweight desktop, browsing, coding, media playback, older games, and emulation. It is not designed for modern desktop gaming or demanding video production. The small internal storage also makes a large microSD card practically essential.
Sleep, controllers, and docking may be imperfect
Alternative operating systems are separate projects from Nintendo’s software. Controller mapping, sleep and resume, hardware acceleration, battery reporting, Wi-Fi, and dock behavior can vary by release. A Switchroot installation is best treated as an enthusiast computer rather than a polished replacement for the stock console.
Chromium may not be current
Switchroot documents that Chromium updates beyond version 126 were discontinued on its listed releases. Firefox from the Switchroot-supported Ubuntu PPA is the more current documented browser route for Jammy and Noble.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The console boots normally | Patched hardware, failed RCM entry, poor jig contact, charge-only cable, or failed payload injection | Confirm the model, RCM state, jig placement, data cable, and payload process |
| Linux or Android vanished | The SD card was repartitioned | Restore the backed-up FAT32, emuMMC, or Android data only after the new OS boots |
| Joy-Cons do not work in Linux | Pairing or calibration data was not dumped | First pair them in Horizon, then use Hekate → Nyx Options → Dump Joy-Con BT |
| Wi-Fi fails on a WPA3/WPA2 transition network | NetworkManager selects WPA3, which the Switch hardware may not handle correctly | Try nmcli dev wifi connect Wifi-Name-Here or configure the router for WPA/WPA2 Personal |
| External display is blank | HDMI hot-plug or handshake problem | Try another dock, HDMI cable, display input, or compatible USB-C display adapter |
| Video playback is slow | The player is using software decoding | Try MPV, SMPlayer, VLC, or another documented FFmpeg-based hardware-accelerated path |
| The SD card becomes corrupted | Unsafe removal, poor card quality, or filesystem failure | Unmount it properly and use a reliable U3/A2 card |
A normal reboot also deserves explanation: custom firmware is not permanently installed merely because it ran once. On an unpatched V1, a normal reboot may require injecting the payload again. Modchipped systems can reload a payload automatically during reboot.
Which setup makes sense?
| Goal | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer captures and keep everything official | Stock Horizon | No modification; USB media transfer is supported |
| Browsing, streaming, cloud gaming, or remote desktop | Switchroot Android | Android apps and tablet-style interaction are more convenient |
| Terminal work, coding, Linux apps, and a desktop | Switchroot Linux | Provides a conventional ARM Linux environment |
| Portable retro gaming | Lakka or a Linux/Android emulator setup | Focused interface and suitable older-system emulation |
| Modern PC gaming | Neither | The hardware and ARM compatibility are substantial limitations |
FAQ
Can a normal Nintendo Switch run Windows?
No. The Switch uses an ARM-based Tegra platform and does not natively run ordinary Windows desktop software. A modified console can boot Switchroot Linux or Android, but that is not the same as installing Windows.
Which Nintendo Switch models can become a portable PC?
Switchroot Android and Linux builds support the original V1 and V2 consoles, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Boot access is the separate issue: an unpatched first-generation V1 can use the RCM vulnerability, while patched units, Lite models, and OLED models generally need a modchip.
Is Linux or Android better on a Switch?
Android is usually better for browsing, streaming, cloud gaming, remote desktop, and tablet apps. Linux is better for a conventional desktop, terminal work, SSH, development tools, LibreOffice, and ARM Linux applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Will installing Linux erase my Switch games and Android installation?
Repartitioning the microSD card can erase its existing layout, including FAT32 files, emuMMC data, and Android partitions. Make verified backups before using Hekate’s partitioning tools.
The Bottom Line
The accurate description is not “a Nintendo Switch that becomes a PC.” It is a modified Switch that can boot Android or desktop Linux. Stock hardware is useful for media transfer, while Switchroot Android makes a practical streaming and tablet terminal and Switchroot Linux provides the most PC-like experience. Neither option replaces a Windows laptop or Steam Deck: ARM compatibility, limited performance, small storage, battery life, boot requirements, and occasional hardware quirks all remain part of the package.
