Choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S by prioritizing the games you want, your TV and performance expectations, whether you use discs, and the full cost of the console and storage. There is no reliable overall winner based on specifications alone.
Start with where and how you want to play
Switch 2 is the only hybrid in this comparison: it works as a handheld, can be set up for tabletop play, and can connect to a TV through its dock. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are living-room consoles; their comparison is mainly about games, display goals, disc options, storage and ownership cost.

Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, and released it on June 5, 2025. Its 7.9-inch LCD has a 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 and variable refresh rate (VRR) support up to 120 Hz. In handheld and tabletop modes, maximum resolution is 1080p. On a TV, output can reach 4K at 60 fps, or 1080p and 1440p at up to 120 fps. Those are system output capabilities, not a promise that every game renders at those resolutions or frame rates; the game and display matter. (Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications.)

If you always play on a TV, Switch 2’s hybrid feature may not be valuable enough to outweigh your preferences for the PlayStation or Xbox game libraries. If you often travel, share a screen, or want to switch between handheld and TV play, that flexibility is a substantive difference rather than a small spec advantage.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Choose by the games you want to play
Make a short list of specific games you expect to play, then confirm that they are available on the console you are considering. A console’s technical specifications cannot tell you whether its game library suits you. Check current catalogs and release details directly, since availability changes over time.
Existing Nintendo Switch owners should also check compatibility for their must-keep games before moving to Switch 2. Nintendo cautions that some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible on Switch 2 and provides title-specific compatibility information. (Nintendo’s Switch 2 game compatibility guidance.)
What the TV and performance specifications mean
| Console | Officially stated display or graphics information | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Up to 4K/60 fps TV output; up to 1080p or 1440p output at 120 fps. Built-in screen is 1080p with VRR support up to 120 Hz. (Nintendo) | Not every game reaches these output resolutions or frame rates; the title and display constrain results. |
| Xbox Series X | Microsoft describes it as supporting native 4K; the comparison page lists 12 teraflops. Some models include a UHD Blu-ray drive. (Microsoft Xbox) | Specifications do not establish how a particular game performs on your display. |
| Xbox Series S | Microsoft describes it as disc-free, designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling; the comparison page lists 4 teraflops. (Microsoft Xbox) | Upscaling is not the same as native 4K. Supported content and display affect frame-rate capabilities. |
| PlayStation 5 | Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists a Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA-based graphics engine, 16 GB GDDR6 memory and a 10-teraflop GPU specification. (Sony’s PS5 manual) | These are specifications, not a cross-platform benchmark or a tested result for a specific game. |
Xbox Series X and Series S are not interchangeable choices: the X is Microsoft’s option for native 4K and an available disc drive, while the S is disc-free and aimed at 1440p with 4K upscaling. Microsoft says both support up to 120 fps where the content and display permit it. On Switch 2, 120-fps output is likewise conditional. Sony’s cited manual lists PS5 hardware specifications but does not provide a comparable real-world result here, so teraflops or component labels should not be treated as a definitive ranking across platforms.

Consider discs, storage and your existing library
Physical games and movies
If you buy used games, trade or lend discs, or want a UHD Blu-ray player, verify the exact model before buying. Microsoft says some Series X models have a UHD Blu-ray drive, while Series S is disc-free. Do not assume every PS5 configuration has the same drive arrangement; check the exact model and bundle available in your market.
Storage expansion
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal UFS storage and accepts compatible microSD Express cards for expansion. A generic microSD card is not an equivalent recommendation: Nintendo specifies microSD Express compatibility. (Nintendo’s storage details.)
Microsoft lists a separately sold Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that matches the consoles’ custom SSD performance, and also mentions USB external HDD support. Check the model, capacity and supported use before buying storage; an external hard drive is not the same option as the expansion card. (Microsoft’s Xbox comparison.)

For any console, compare the usable space you need with the included storage and the cost of compatible expansion in your country. The listed internal capacity alone does not establish how many games will fit.
Compare total cost in your country
There is no dependable three-way current price comparison in the official specifications cited here. Nintendo’s cited announcement is a Japan launch release, and launch pricing should not be presented as today’s price elsewhere. Xbox pricing and options vary by model, market and retailer; a comparable current PS5 retail price is not established here.
Before deciding, compare the exact console model, disc drive, bundle contents, compatible storage and any online subscription you expect to use at local retailers. Subscription catalogs, terms and availability can change, so check the current offer in your region rather than treating a subscription as a fixed part of the hardware price.
A practical decision guide
- Choose Switch 2 if handheld, tabletop and TV play in one system is important, and the Nintendo games you want are available. Confirm compatibility for original Switch games you rely on.
- Choose Xbox Series X if the games you want are on Xbox and native 4K or an available UHD Blu-ray drive matters to you. Check the exact configuration and price.
- Choose Xbox Series S if you want a disc-free Xbox and are comfortable with Microsoft’s 1440p-with-4K-upscaling positioning rather than Series X’s native-4K focus.
- Choose PS5 if its available games and your preferences make it the better living-room fit. Compare the exact model and its disc arrangement rather than deciding from hardware specifications alone.
If you are torn between PS5 and Xbox, first eliminate any console that lacks a game you consider essential. Then compare the exact local models on disc use, display needs, storage costs and bundle price. If you are choosing between either home console and Switch 2, decide whether portable play is valuable enough to change how you will use the system.
