Switch 2 is a larger, more capable successor that can play many original Switch games, but not every game or accessory carries over. You can transfer eligible digital purchases, save data and settings, and keep using a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Original Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can work wirelessly in compatible games, but the old dock and ordinary microSD cards do not work as Switch 2 equivalents. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility listing for the games you care about before upgrading.
What changes with Switch 2?
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as larger than the original Switch. Its Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically instead of sliding onto rails. The generations are not interchangeable: original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch.

Display output and performance depend on the game
With a compatible TV, Switch 2 can output up to 4K in supported games. Compatible games can run at up to 120 frames per second; 4K output is limited to 60 fps. These are technical maximums, not guarantees for every game. HDR depends on the game, and variable refresh rate (VRR) support also varies by game and is available only in handheld and tabletop modes. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications and features describe these limits.
Some games have Switch 2-specific versions or updates
Switch 2 has exclusive games and features. Some existing Switch games may receive free updates, while others offer paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Improvements and added features vary by title, so check the details for each game rather than assuming an upgrade is free or changes every aspect of play. Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide explains the transition and game options.

Can you play original Switch games on Switch 2?
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch. Compatibility is not universal: Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible, and says its compatibility work continues. Check the current Nintendo compatibility listing for each important game. A game’s status may change as compatibility information is updated.
For a physical game, use its original Switch game card. Digital purchases associated with your Nintendo Account can be transferred through System Transfer; digital games are redownloaded on Switch 2 rather than copied as installed files. A Switch 2 Edition upgrade, where offered, is a separate title-specific option and may cost extra.
What data, subscriptions and settings can move?
Use System Transfer for eligible account data
Nintendo’s System Transfer can move linked Nintendo Accounts, purchased digital games, certain save data, parental controls and other settings. To use it, you need an active internet connection and at least one Switch user profile linked to a Nintendo Account. After transfer, redownload digital games. GameChat settings must be adjusted separately. Consult Nintendo’s System Transfer instructions for the current steps and conditions.

Nintendo Switch Online continues
An existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can continue on Switch 2. Nintendo lists GameChat and a GameCube Classics collection among Switch 2 additions; access to GameCube Classics requires the Expansion Pack membership. Feature availability and membership requirements are distinct, so check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 service information.

Sharing features have limits
GameShare can send supported games from a Switch 2 console to either Switch 2 or original Switch consoles. An original Switch can receive locally shared games only from Switch 2. Virtual game cards can be managed across two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time, subject to Nintendo’s rules. These features do not mean every game can be shared in every direction; see Nintendo’s sharing and transfer guidance.
Parental Controls app remains usable
The existing Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app works with Switch 2, including added controls for GameChat. Nintendo’s transfer guide covers the app’s Switch 2 support.
Will original Switch controllers and accessories work?
Original Joy-Con and Pro Controller
Original Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2 in compatible games. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to the new console or charge while attached to it. The original Pro Controller can be charged through the Switch 2 dock using USB.
Older controllers do not provide features that require Joy-Con 2 controls, such as mouse controls, and an original controller’s HOME button cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. Nintendo’s controller compatibility information lists these restrictions.

Grips and other Joy-Con accessories
Do not assume an accessory made for original Joy-Con will fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo says some original accessories, including the standard Joy-Con grip and charging grip, cannot be used with Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con may still connect wirelessly for some games and uses, but that does not make every older accessory compatible. Check the specific accessory’s compatibility before relying on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you reuse the original dock, charger or microSD card?
Dock, power adapter and HDMI cable
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. The original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but Nintendo says its output is insufficient to power TV mode. Nintendo also says the HDMI cable supplied with the original Switch is not compatible with Switch 2. The new console therefore needs its compatible dock and TV-mode setup.
Storage cards
Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards. A conventional microSD card used in the original Switch cannot expand Switch 2 game storage; it can be used only to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. If you need more storage, choose a microSD Express card and verify compatibility with Nintendo’s accessory and compatibility information.
How to decide whether the upgrade makes sense
Work through the practical differences before moving consoles:
- Check your essential games. Search Nintendo’s current compatibility listing title by title, especially for games you play regularly.
- Look at upgrades separately. See whether a game has a free update or a paid Switch 2 Edition and whether its specific improvements matter to you.
- Plan your transfer. Confirm which saves and settings you need, link a user profile to a Nintendo Account, and arrange an internet connection for System Transfer and redownloading games.
- Inventory what you want to reuse. Original Joy-Con and Pro Controllers have limited wireless use; the old dock, standard microSD card for game storage, and some Joy-Con accessories are not replacements for Switch 2-compatible equipment.
- Weigh the new capabilities against your needs. Consider whether Switch 2’s larger design, supported higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate output, exclusive games and added features matter enough to you. The technical maximums apply only where games and modes support them.
Nintendo’s official transfer and compatibility guide is the best place to verify changing game and accessory details. Compatibility information, software updates and available accessories can change; Nintendo’s guide does not establish a complete price comparison between the two console generations.
