A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack adds title-specific enhancements to an original Nintendo Switch game, while a free game update is a separate, game-specific update that may improve performance or add features. An upgrade pack is not always paid: Nintendo lists some as free or available at no extra cost to eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Check the individual game listing for its price, requirements and features.
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack?
An upgrade pack enhances a selected original Switch game for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s description says a Switch 2 Edition bundles the original game with its upgrade pack; existing owners can acquire the pack separately. The pack requires the full original game, and its Switch 2 Edition features can be played only on Nintendo Switch 2. The original game remains playable on Nintendo Switch.

Depending on the title, an upgrade pack can add visual improvements, features or modes. Nintendo makes these editions for selected games, and the contents vary by game. See Nintendo’s instructions for upgrading Switch software to a Switch 2 Edition.

Nintendo separately describes free updates for selected Switch games. An update may improve performance or add features such as GameShare support, but its contents differ by game. “Free update” describes the update’s price; it does not mean the game has become a Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo’s transfer guide explains that free updates vary by title.

How the two options compare
| Question | Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack | Free game update |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A title-specific pack that enhances an original Switch game for its Switch 2 Edition. | A free update for a selected game; it is not necessarily a Switch 2 Edition. |
| What might it add? | Visual improvements, features or modes; the exact additions depend on the game. | Performance improvements or features such as GameShare support; contents depend on the game. |
| Do you need the original game? | Yes. The upgrade pack requires the full original game. | Ownership requirements depend on the game and update; Nintendo’s general transfer guide does not establish one rule for every title. |
| Does it cost money? | It may be paid, free, or available at no additional cost to eligible members, depending on the title and terms. | Nintendo describes this category as free. |
| Which console gets the enhancement? | The Switch 2 Edition features are playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. | Check the individual game listing; the general update description does not establish that every feature is Switch 2-only. |
What Nintendo’s examples show about price and features
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Nintendo Support lists the US upgrade pack at $9.99 through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store. Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access it at no additional cost under Nintendo’s stated terms. Listed features include smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, two manual save files, and the ZELDA NOTES service. Nintendo also offers a physical Switch 2 Edition, which is the full-game route rather than a standalone upgrade pack. Check Nintendo’s physical-edition listing and Nintendo Support’s Tears of the Kingdom DLC information for current details.
Subnautica
Nintendo’s listing calls the Subnautica upgrade pack free for people who already own the Switch version. It describes up to 1440p at 60 fps docked with a compatible TV, up to 1080p at 60 fps handheld, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Those resolution and frame-rate figures apply to this game’s listing, not to Switch 2 upgrade packs generally. See Nintendo’s Subnautica upgrade-pack listing.

Which option should you look for?
- You already own the Switch game: Check whether that specific title has a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack, then confirm its price, membership terms and features. A pack is a separate route from buying the full Switch 2 Edition.
- You do not own the game: Compare the full Switch 2 Edition with the original game plus its upgrade pack. Confirm what the listing includes before buying; an upgrade pack alone requires the original game.
- You only want to know whether an update is free: Check the game’s own update or store information. A free update and an upgrade pack are different offerings, and one does not establish the other’s price or benefits.
