Nintendo Switch 2 Storage Guide: How Much Space Minecraft and Its Updates Need

Nintendo estimates Minecraft for Switch 2 at 1.2 GB, but that pre-release figure does not include a confirmed update total. Here’s how to check space and expand it.

Nintendo’s US listing estimates Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 at 1.2 GB. That is a listing estimate, not a confirmed installed size including updates: the page shows an October 27, 2026 release date, which is still in the future as of October 9, 2026. Nintendo has not published a Minecraft-specific update-size schedule or an updated total footprint.

How much storage does Minecraft need on Switch 2?

Nintendo’s US product listing estimates the game file at 1.2 GB. Because the listing displays an October 27, 2026 release date, that figure should be treated as a pre-release estimate rather than a verified download or installed-size measurement. It does not establish how much space the game will occupy after updates.

How much space will Minecraft updates need?

Nintendo’s official pages do not provide a Minecraft update-size history, a schedule of future update sizes, or a cumulative post-update storage figure. Updates can change the amount of storage the game uses, so the 1.2 GB estimate is not a reliable promise of the final space requirement. Check the live eShop listing and the console’s Data Management screen for the current information; Nintendo explains the latter in its data-management guidance.

Is Switch 2’s built-in storage enough?

Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use. That is the console’s stated capacity, not the free space available for games on every device. The amount left depends on system use and the software and other content already stored on that console.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo’s data-management FAQ says no individual games currently require additional storage space to play. An expansion card is therefore optional for playing Minecraft; it can be useful if you want more room for other downloaded games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, or video.

Check the free space on your console

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management to review storage use and available space.

Nintendo’s Data Management instructions provide further details. System update version 23.0.0, released September 9, 2026, added a breakdown of capacity by data type for system memory and microSD Express storage.

Which expansion card works with Switch 2?

For game storage, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards. Nintendo states that ordinary microSD cards cannot save or load digital games on the console. Its compatibility guidance is explicit: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Read Nintendo’s card compatibility information before using a card from an earlier Switch.

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. They can store downloaded software, updates, and DLC, while game save data remains in system memory. Nintendo recommends using one card with the console: software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card. See Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ for its capacity and storage guidance.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Choosing whether to expand

  • Stay with internal storage if the space shown in Data Management is enough for Minecraft and the rest of your library.
  • Add a card if you want more room for downloaded software, updates, DLC, or media.
  • Check the format carefully: the card must explicitly be microSD Express; a standard microSD card is not a substitute for storing or loading digital games on Switch 2.

Nintendo’s cited guidance does not compare individual card brands, prices, or performance, so choose capacity based on your broader library and storage needs rather than the Minecraft estimate alone.

What to rely on before downloading

The 1.2 GB figure is Nintendo’s estimate on a pre-release listing, and the final post-update footprint is not established by Nintendo’s cited pages. Before downloading or expanding storage, check the current Minecraft listing and your console’s free space in System Settings > Data Management. If you need more room for games, use microSD Express, not ordinary microSD.
