For Switch 2 RPGs, choose digital if you want instant access and a library without card swapping; choose a full-data physical game card if you value a tangible copy you can hand to someone else. Check boxed releases carefully: a Game-Key Card is physical, but it holds an activation key rather than the full game, so it still needs a download and storage space.
How to choose a format for a Switch 2 RPG
There is no format that is best for every RPG buyer. The practical choice depends on the specific release and what matters most to you: account-based convenience, offline access, passing a copy to another person, or having a physical card.

- Check the physical release. Confirm whether its packaging describes a full-data game card or a Game-Key Card. “Physical” alone does not tell you whether the game data is on the card.
- Check the download and storage requirement. Nintendo says to look under “Required Storage Space” on the game’s official software page or on the front of its packaging. Downloads need free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo’s storage guidance
- Compare the current price in your country. Physical and digital prices, availability, and release formats can vary. Compare the same RPG and edition rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.
- Choose based on how you use games. Prefer a library with no card swapping? Digital may suit you. Want a tangible game card you can lend or potentially resell? Full-data physical may be a better fit, though resale value is never guaranteed.
What each Switch 2 format actually provides
| Format | What you receive | Download and storage | Offline play and sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase | A downloadable game tied to the Nintendo Account used to buy it. | The game must be downloaded and needs free system or microSD Express storage. Check its listed size. | Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card feature lets loaded games be played offline and by other users on that console. Eligible games can be lent to family-group members under Nintendo’s rules. |
| Physical full-data game card | A game card; confirm the particular title’s package details. | Check the title for updates or additional downloads and their storage needs. | You can physically hand the card to another person. Check title-specific requirements; having a card does not establish that every part of a game works offline. |
| Physical Game-Key Card | A physical card containing an activation key, not the full game data. | Requires an internet connection for the initial game-data download and enough storage for that data. | Nintendo says subsequent gameplay does not require internet, but the Game-Key Card must be inserted to play. |
What is a Switch 2 Game-Key Card?
A Game-Key Card is a physical card that activates a game whose full data must be downloaded. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained in Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder Q&A that the card “does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software.”
The distinction matters when buying an RPG for a console with limited free space or when expecting the card itself to contain the game. Nintendo says the first play requires an internet connection to download the data. After that, the game can be played without a continuing internet connection as long as the card is inserted. Do digital Switch 2 games work offline?
Nintendo treats eShop games and DLC as Virtual Game Cards. A loaded Virtual Game Card can be played offline, and other users on that console can play it. Nintendo allows a digital library to be loaded across up to two linked consoles; the consoles need to be online for initial linking and for moving a Virtual Game Card. For other consoles outside that arrangement, Nintendo says an internet connection is required for digital play, and other users cannot play the account’s games under that setup. Can you lend or resell a Switch 2 RPG?
A physical card can be handed to another person, subject to the game’s own requirements. A digital game cannot be passed around as a card; Nintendo instead offers a limited lending feature for eligible games. A digital game may be lent to a Nintendo Account family-group member, with proximity required for the lending step and a 14-day loan period. Eligibility and Nintendo’s other restrictions apply.

- Choose digital if you prioritize instant access, keeping a large library together, and avoiding card swaps. Remember that purchases are account-linked and downloaded games occupy storage.
- Choose a full-data physical card if you want a tangible card and value being able to hand it to another person or retain the option of resale. Verify the title’s packaging and any extra download requirements.
- Consider a Game-Key Card separately if you want a boxed copy but are comfortable downloading the full game. It still requires storage and the card for play, while offering no full game data on the card.
Expansion storage is optional, not a universal requirement. Nintendo identifies microSD Express cards as the supported expansion-storage type for Switch 2; whether you need one depends on the games installed and free space available. Check each RPG’s required storage before buying. Nintendo’s storage guidance
