Nintendo Switch 2 Game: Preorder or Wait for Reviews?

Unsure whether to preorder a Switch 2 game? Weigh the value of reviews against day-one access, and check Nintendo’s U.S. digital and physical purchase terms.

Wait for reviews if you are unsure about a game’s quality, performance, or fit. Consider preordering if you have already decided to play it at launch—or a confirmed bonus is worth accepting the uncertainty. Review timing varies by game, so check the specific title rather than assuming reviews will arrive before release.

Which choice fits your situation?

Your priority Better fit Reason
You are unsure about quality, technical performance, or whether the game suits you Wait for reviews Independent coverage can give you more information before you spend. Review dates vary by title.
You have already decided to play on release day Preorder may fit A digital preorder can preload before launch, subject to storage space and a release-time update.
A preorder bonus is your main reason Verify the listing first Only some games offer bonuses; on Nintendo eShop, bonus download content becomes available after payment is processed.
You might change your mind Check the seller’s terms Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases have different payment and cancellation rules in the U.S.

What you gain by waiting for reviews

Waiting gives you a chance to assess whether a game is worth buying for you, including its quality and technical performance. Reviews are input for your decision, not a directive to buy or skip a game. If you are considering waiting, look for coverage of the specific game and check when it is scheduled to appear; there is no universal Switch 2 review timetable.

What a Nintendo eShop preorder means in the U.S.

Nintendo of America says selected unreleased Switch and Switch 2 games can be preordered digitally through eShop. For an eligible preorder, payment is processed seven days before release, and the game preloads then if you have enough storage. A small update is needed at release to unlock play. Nintendo says you can cancel before payment is processed; after that point, the eShop cancellation window has closed. If the payment method fails, the preorder is canceled. Nintendo’s eShop preorder instructions explain the process.

Not every game can be preordered. If a game releases within seven days or is already out, the eShop may show “Proceed to Purchase” instead. Check the current listing for the game you want. If its eShop preorder includes bonus download content, Nintendo says the bonus code is available only after payment is processed, no sooner than seven days before release.

Physical pre-purchases have different terms

Nintendo of America says physical game pre-purchases from Nintendo Store are charged immediately and ship 1–3 business days after release. Nintendo says cancellation requires contacting support. These terms apply to Nintendo Store, not every seller: another retailer may set different payment, shipping, cancellation, and return rules. Check that retailer’s listing and policies before ordering. Nintendo’s guidance on pre-orders and pre-purchases describes its U.S. store terms.

Why the Switch 2 launch is not a rule for every game

When the Switch 2 launched in 2025, Nintendo did not provide pre-launch review units for the console or launch software. Video Games Chronicle reported this on June 3, 2025, noting Nintendo’s explanation that important features and updates would be available through a launch-day system update. VGC’s report describes that specific launch situation; it does not establish when reviews will appear for another Switch 2 game.

Star Fox™ - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
  • Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way
  • A cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, featuring fully voiced dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
  • Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
  • Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls

Review-copy access and embargo timing differ among publishers, and coverage may sometimes appear only after a game is live. Forbes also reported on June 3, 2025 that Switch 2 reviews would not appear before the hardware launch and discussed variation in review access. That report is useful context, not a forecast for a particular game. Check current coverage or announcements for the title you are weighing.

A quick decision checklist

  • Wait if reviews could change your decision or you want to judge performance before paying.
  • Consider preordering if you are already committed to playing at launch and early access matters to you.
  • Verify a bonus on the actual game listing; do not assume every preorder includes one.
  • Check the seller’s terms for payment timing, cancellation, shipping, and returns—especially for a physical copy.
  • Check review timing title by title. The Switch 2 hardware launch delay does not predict the review schedule for later games.
