Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards vs. Full-Data Cartridges: What’s Actually Known

Switch 2 physical games use different formats: full-data cartridges store the game, while Game-Key Cards require a download. The “hate grifters” claim is not verified by the available reporting.

Short answer: Switch 2 “physical” games do not all work the same way. A full-data cartridge stores the game on the card; a Game-Key Card requires a download and must remain inserted to play. The evidence available here does not establish that Nintendo exposed “hate grifters” or made a statement to that effect. It does document the format dispute and what one independent publisher has said about its own releases.

What makes a Switch 2 game “true physical”?

The phrase usually refers to the difference between a full-data cartridge and a Game-Key Card. Both are cartridge-shaped products, but the game data they provide is different.

Format What is on the card What you need to play
Full-data cartridge The game data is stored on the cartridge. Updates may still need to be downloaded to the console. Insert the cartridge. Check the specific game and edition for update or other download requirements.
Game-Key Card A key that enables access to the game; it does not contain the full game. Download the game, then keep the card inserted to play. The initial download depends on access to the required online infrastructure.

That distinction matters for buyers who want a game that can be installed from the card without a full download, or who care about access years later. A Game-Key Card is still a resalable physical product, but resale does not remove the download requirement. Nintendo Everything explains the formats and names Cyberpunk 2077 and Hades 2 as third-party examples complete on cartridge; verify the precise edition and region before buying, since availability and releases can differ.

What Nintendo has—and has not—been shown to do

The headline’s claim that Nintendo “exposes hate grifters” is not established by the sources available for this article. They document criticism of Game-Key Cards and report on Switch 2 physical formats, but do not identify a group Nintendo exposed or verify an alleged Nintendo statement. No verified Nintendo quotation supporting that accusation is available here, so it should not be treated as fact.

  • STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
  • STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
  • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)

A separate, time-sensitive report from Nintendo Everything says that most Nintendo-published Switch 2 physical releases were full-data cartridges at the time of its 2026 article, with Pokémon Pokopia identified as an exception then. That report concerns Nintendo-published releases; it does not establish the format used for every third-party game, and the list may change as new editions appear.

What publishers have said about the formats

In a Nintendo Life interview published May 24, 2025, Limited Run Games CEO Josh Fairhurst said his company would use actual cartridges for standard Switch 2 games it manufactures and publishes, and had no plans to support Game-Key Cards for those titles. That is Fairhurst’s stated policy for Limited Run Games—not a Nintendo policy.

Fairhurst also explained that retail production requires games to be completed and approved three to four months before a planned launch. He said Game-Key Cards can allow publishers to prepare a retail product on that schedule when a game is completed late. This is his account of publishing lead times and the format’s tradeoff, not an official Nintendo explanation.

Why players object—and what the sales figure means

Criticism focuses on having to download the complete game, relying on online infrastructure for that initial download, and uncertainty about long-term preservation. A full-data cartridge avoids the full-game download requirement, but should not be confused with a guarantee that a game will never need updates.

One sales figure offers context about physical demand, but not about Game-Key Cards specifically. GamesRadar reported that 75.4% of Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 sales in June were physical “sell-in” copies, a figure attributed to CD Projekt Red’s financial presentation. Sell-in means copies shipped to retailers; some may still be in stores or warehouses, so this is not the share consumers bought from retailers, nor a measure of all Switch 2 games.

How to check a game before buying

Do not rely on a listing that says only “physical.” Check the exact game, edition, and region, then look for clear information from the publisher or retailer about what the card contains.

  • Does the cartridge contain the game data? Distinguish a full-data cartridge from a Game-Key Card.
  • Is a download required? For a Game-Key Card, the complete game must be downloaded.
  • Must the card stay inserted? A Game-Key Card must remain inserted to play.
  • Are updates or other downloads needed? A full-data cartridge can still receive downloadable updates.
  • Does resale matter to you? Game-Key Cards can be resold, but the next owner still needs to download the game.

For product searches, “Nintendo Switch 2 physical games” is a useful starting phrase, not proof that a specific listing contains the game on the cartridge. Confirm the format for the exact edition before purchase.
