Choose a regular Nintendo Switch 2 game card if you want the game data on a card you can swap, lend, or potentially resell. Choose digital if you prefer downloads and want to play offline after loading the virtual game card. Check the package carefully: a game-key card is physical, but it requires a full download and must be inserted to play.
What “physical” means on Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 supports regular game cards and game-key cards. They are not interchangeable in how they deliver a game: a regular card contains the game data, while a game-key card does not contain the full game data. With a game-key card, you download the game to the console or supported storage, then keep the card inserted whenever you play. Nintendo says internet access is required for the first launch; after that, the game can start offline with the card inserted. See Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview.

Because listings may call both products physical, check the exact game’s box or product description before buying. The official Nintendo pages do not provide a complete title-by-title catalogue of card types, so confirm the format for the particular game and edition.

Nintendo digital purchases have two access modes with different rules. A virtual game card is loaded onto a paired console; there, it can be played offline and used by all users on that console. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide explains loading and pairing.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Virtual game cards
A virtual game card can be loaded onto up to two paired systems. You can unpair systems and change which ones are paired. Nintendo also allows virtual game cards to be lent to members of your Nintendo Account family group, subject to its lending rules. Loading, lending, and online-license use are separate features, not unrestricted sharing.
Online licenses
If you use three or more systems, Nintendo offers an online-license setting. Starting a game this way requires a successful online check, and only the account that bought the game can play it under that setting. A game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems through either access mode. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for the current account and license rules.

Internet and storage: what each format needs
| Format or mode | Internet requirement | Storage requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Regular game card | The game data is on the card. This does not establish that updates or online features can be used without internet. | Extra storage is not established as necessary for every title; updates or other data may still use storage. |
| Game-key card | Internet is required to download the game and for the first launch. Nintendo says it can start offline afterward, with the card inserted. | Enough free system or microSD Express storage is needed for the download. |
| Digital virtual game card | After the virtual game card is loaded, it can play offline on that console. | The game is downloaded, so it uses system or microSD Express storage. |
| Digital online license | A successful online check is required to start the game. | The game is downloaded, so it uses system or microSD Express storage. |
Nintendo lists 256 GB of system storage for Switch 2, with some reserved for system use. It says no individual games currently require added storage to play. Downloadable software, update data, and DLC can be stored on a separately sold microSD Express card; regular microSD cards from the earlier Switch are not supported for Switch 2 game software. Save data remains in system memory. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ and microSD Express Card FAQ.
Save data is not tied to card versus download
Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory and is generally associated with the selected user. Playing from a card or as a download does not itself change the save. Cloud-save availability depends on whether Nintendo Switch Online supports cloud saves for that title.

Which format fits your priorities?
| If you care most about… | Better fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A physical copy with the game data on it | Regular game card | Confirm that the listing is a regular card, not a game-key card. |
| Swapping games without downloading each full game | Regular game card | Updates and online features may still require internet or storage. |
| Buying and accessing a game without handling a card | Digital | It requires a download and storage space. |
| Offline play after setup | Loaded digital virtual game card, regular game card, or a previously downloaded game-key card | Online-license launches need an online check; game-key cards need internet for download and first launch. |
| Sharing with family | Either may work, depending on what you mean by sharing | Digital lending is limited to Nintendo Account family-group members; virtual-card loading and online-license use have separate restrictions. Physical lending depends on the particular product and arrangement. |
| Potential resale | Physical copy | Resale depends on the edition, marketplace, and demand; a game-key card still has to be present to play. |
Compare the same game before paying
There is no established general price advantage for either format. The official pages reviewed do not establish a universal price difference, current discounts, retailer stock, or resale values. Compare the same title and edition in your region at the time you buy, including the total price and any storage you may need.
Quick Recap
- Is the physical listing a regular game card or a game-key card?
- Does the format require a full download, and do you have enough free storage?
- Will you need internet for the download, first launch, or every launch?
- Do you value card swapping, lending, or possible resale more than avoiding physical media?
- Will other household members use the game, and does the relevant family-group or console rule fit how you share?
