Compare the standalone package with any current local bundle, then add accessories only for needs you actually have. For extra game storage, the key requirement is a microSD Express card—not a standard microSD card.
Which Switch 2 package should you buy?
Nintendo’s cited U.S. specifications describe a Switch 2 with 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD display; they do not identify a separate core hardware configuration to choose between. The practical decision is usually whether to buy the console by itself or a bundle that includes a game.

Nintendo announced a Mario Kart World bundle at launch, as well as a Japanese-language-only system for Japan. That is launch context, not confirmation that either package is currently available where you shop. Check your local retailer’s current listing and compare the total price, the included game, and whether you want that game. A bundle is worthwhile only if its price and included game make sense for you.
Nintendo’s announced U.S. suggested retail price became $499.99 before tax on September 1, 2026. Its announcement also lists €499.99 in Europe from September 1, 2026 and ¥59,980 in Japan from May 25, 2026, for the Japanese-language-only system. Prices are regional, and Nintendo said other regions would announce revisions through local subsidiaries; check the current local price rather than treating these figures as a worldwide price list. How much storage do you need?
The console has 256 GB of internal storage, but if you want to expand space for Switch 2 games, the card must be microSD Express. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Check the card itself or its packaging for “EX” or “Express” before buying.
A standard microSD card is not an alternative for storing Switch 2 games. Nintendo says older standard microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from an original Switch. Internal storage and card capacity are separate; a card adds capacity rather than changing the console’s built-in storage. Which accessories are worth buying?
MicroSD Express card: only if you need more game space
This is the accessory with a specific Switch 2 compatibility requirement. Buy one if the internal storage is not enough for your library, and compare capacity and price while confirming the Express marking. Do not buy a standard microSD card expecting it to store Switch 2 games.
Extra controllers: for multiplayer or a different feel
Additional Joy-Con 2 controllers can suit local multiplayer, while a Switch 2 Pro Controller offers a conventional controller option. Nintendo also says the original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2. Whether you need another controller depends on who will play and on each game’s supported control modes; check the game before buying for a particular setup.

Carrying case: for taking the console with you
A case is optional, but can be useful if you regularly travel with the console. Choose one sized specifically for Switch 2. A TechRadar reviewer recommended considering a case for portable use; that is editorial advice, not a Nintendo requirement. TechRadar’s Switch 2 review is the source of that recommendation.
Screen protector: personal preference
A screen protector is not established as a requirement in the official sources cited here, and no particular product is identified as best. If you choose one, confirm that it is made to fit Switch 2.

Can you reuse original Switch accessories?
Some original Switch accessories work, but compatibility varies by item. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console; charging them requires a compatible original Joy-Con charging grip or stand. The original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly. Nintendo says the original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power it in TV mode through the original dock. Nintendo also lists the old HDMI cable as incompatible for maximizing Switch 2 performance.

Nintendo’s compatibility information marks several other original Switch accessories—including the Joy-Con strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, leg strap, Ring-Con, battery pack and two-way charging stand—as not working with Joy-Con 2. Some may still be usable with original Joy-Con wirelessly in supported games. Check the exact item in Nintendo’s compatibility table before reusing it or replacing it.

Will your games, account and settings carry over?
The Switch 2 game-card slot accepts both Switch 2 and original Nintendo Switch game cards. Nintendo Account services, eShop funds and existing Nintendo Switch Online memberships can continue on Switch 2, but compatibility may vary by game. Consult Nintendo’s compatibility information for titles or features you rely on.
Nintendo names accessibility features that include adjustable display fonts and color tone, text verbalization and button customization. If a particular feature matters to you, confirm how it works in the games you plan to play. Nintendo included those features in its Switch 2 announcement.
What to know about portable use
Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution and HDR10 support. Its estimated battery life is approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the games played; Nintendo describes these as rough estimates, not guaranteed runtime. The company lists approximately three hours to charge while the console is in Sleep mode. These figures are from Nintendo’s U.S. technical specifications.
