Before buying a Nintendo eShop gift card, check the recipient’s Nintendo Account country and match it to the card’s intended region or the same-currency rule published for that market. Then choose from the denominations actually sold by a retailer there. Nintendo’s regional rules differ, so a card that shares a currency with the recipient’s country is not automatically guaranteed to work.
How to choose a compatible Nintendo eShop card
- Find the recipient’s Nintendo Account country. On Nintendo Switch, the eShop country follows the country set on the Nintendo Account. Nintendo explains how to check or change it in its country/region guidance.
- Check the card’s intended region and currency. Nintendo says the country of use is shown on the back of the card; check the insert or listing too if buying a digital code. North American guidance describes cards as country-specific and says they can be redeemed only on systems or accounts set to that country. See Nintendo’s foreign-card support page.
- Apply the regional rule, not a broad currency assumption. Nintendo’s Spain and Germany support pages say cards can be used in countries with the same currency, giving examples such as a French card used in Germany or the Netherlands. That is guidance for those European markets, not a universal guarantee for every country. Check the relevant Nintendo page for the card’s market: Nintendo Spain and Nintendo Germany.
- Choose a locally available amount. Match the card as closely as practical to the recipient’s intended purchase, and decide whether a remaining balance is acceptable. Denominations vary by market and seller; do not assume there is a worldwide menu.
Do Nintendo eShop gift cards work in another country?
It depends on the card’s market and the regional rule that applies. Nintendo’s North American support says eShop cards are specific to a particular country and can only be redeemed on systems and/or Nintendo Accounts set to that same country. Nintendo Spain and Germany describe a same-currency allowance for their markets. Those statements should not be collapsed into a promise that every card works in any country using the same currency.

If you are buying across borders, verify the specific card marking and Nintendo support guidance before paying. A retailer listing that shows only a currency symbol may not make the intended country clear enough; ask the seller or choose a clearly labeled local card.
Which denomination should you buy?
There is no single global denomination list. Nintendo’s U.S. family guidance lists cards of $10, $20, $35, and $50; Nintendo Spain lists €15, €25, €50, €75, and €100. Nintendo does not state a publication year for those pages, and these are examples from separate markets, not a complete or interchangeable catalog. Card selection and inventory vary by retailer and region, as Nintendo Canada notes in its gift-card guidance.

Use the recipient’s local retailer listings to see what is currently available. Select the closest useful amount rather than buying more value to try to get around a region restriction.
What if you already bought a card for the wrong country?
Nintendo says it cannot exchange a card intended for one country or region for one intended for another. Contact the retailer about the purchase, or consider giving the card to someone whose account can redeem it. Changing the recipient’s account country is not a reliable workaround: Nintendo says the eShop balance does not carry over when the country on the Nintendo Account changes. See Nintendo’s country-change guidance.

How to redeem a compatible card
Nintendo’s North American instructions cover the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. On Switch, open Nintendo eShop, choose the account, select Enter Code, enter the 16-character code, and confirm to add funds. The same support page lists account-balance maximums of $800 USD, $1,100 CAD, and $5,000 MXN. These are regional limits from that guidance and may change; check the page for current details: Nintendo’s redemption instructions.
If the card gives error 2813-0054
Nintendo says error 2813-0054 means the code is intended for a different country than the Nintendo Account. Check the account country and the intended country printed on the card or insert. If they do not match, follow the retailer-contact or alternate-recipient options above; Nintendo’s regional support says it cannot exchange the card across countries. See Nintendo’s error and foreign-card guidance.

Check the terms for the card’s market
Do not assume expiration, refund, fee, or account rules are identical in every country. For example, Nintendo’s U.S. card terms say a U.S. card is valid only with U.S. Accounts; once redeemed, its balance belongs to one account and is non-transferable. Those terms also say the balance does not expire, has no fees, and is non-refundable unless required by law. These are U.S.-specific terms, not a statement of worldwide policy: Nintendo U.S. eShop card terms.
