But a 3DS is not a perfect replacement for every DS setup. Some games need an accessory inserted in the original DS’s Game Boy Advance slot, and DS games still display in 2D on a 3DS.
If you’re asking, “Can I play Nintendo DS games on my Nintendo 3DS?”, the answer is generally yes. The better choice for you depends on your specific games, how you want them to look, multiplayer needs, and the condition and price of the used system you find.

Can you play Nintendo DS games on a Nintendo 3DS?
Yes. Nintendo’s US support page says that, with a few exceptions involving the AGB (Game Boy Advance) slot, DS games are compatible with Nintendo 3DS-family systems. Nintendo UK describes compatibility as “most” DS games and identifies GBA Game Pak slot accessories as exceptions. Check the individual game’s manual if it uses a peripheral; 3DS-family systems do not have the DS’s Slot 2 for such accessories.
There is also a regional qualification for DSi games: Nintendo UK notes that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL-region 3DS. That caveat is about certain DSi games, not a blanket restriction on all DS games.

Which system is better for DS games: DS or 3DS?
| What matters | Nintendo DS-family system | Nintendo 3DS-family system |
|---|---|---|
| Playing DS game cards | Plays DS games; exact compatibility depends on the model and game. | Plays most DS games, with exceptions including games that require the GBA slot. |
| Playing 3DS game cards | Cannot play 3DS game cards. | Can play 3DS game cards. |
| DS-game display | Native DS presentation. | DS games display in 2D and are expanded by default; you can launch them at original resolution. |
| DS accessories that use the GBA slot | Compatible DS models with Slot 2 can use supported accessories. | Cannot use accessories that access the DS’s Slot 2. |
| DS online play | Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for certain DS/DSi games has been discontinued. | The same discontinued service applies; DS-game compatibility does not restore it. |
The 3DS-family system’s clearest advantage is library flexibility: it runs most DS games and can also play 3DS game cards. Nintendo says 3DS game cards play only on 3DS-family systems, not on DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL. That advantage matters if you may want 3DS software; it does not mean DS games look or behave like 3DS games.

How do DS games look on a 3DS?
DS games run in 2D on a 3DS. They do not gain stereoscopic 3D graphics. By default, the game image is expanded to fit the 3DS display, so it appears at a lower resolution than the original DS presentation.

- Nintendo 3DS offers a new way to play, 3D without the need for special glasses. The 3D Depth Slider lets your determine how much 3D you want to see.
- Play 3D games and take 3D pictures with Nintendo 3DS. One inner camera and two outer cameras. Resolutions are 640 x 480 for each camera. Lens are single focus and uses the CMOS capture element.
- Connect to a deeper wireless experience with SpotPass and StreetPass, giving you more exclusive content and connecting you with other Nintendo 3DS users.
- Complete with an adjustable stylus, 6 AR cards, and fun built-in software such as Face Raiders, Nintendo 3DS Sound, and the Mii Maker application.
- Use Parental Controls to restrict 3D mode for children 6 and under.
To launch a DS or DSi game at its original resolution, hold START or SELECT while starting the game. This changes the way the image is displayed; it does not add 3D effects. Nintendo’s Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual (UK) describes the launch method and DS-software limitations.
What 3DS features are unavailable while a DS game is running?
Some 3DS system features are unavailable during DS or DSi software. Nintendo lists the HOME Menu, StreetPass, and SpotPass as unavailable while those games are running. A DS game therefore does not gain access to those 3DS features simply because it is played on 3DS hardware. See Nintendo’s compatibility and feature notes.

Does DS multiplayer still work?
Separate local wireless play from online play. Local wireless may work when a particular DS game supports it, but the mode and compatible systems vary by title. Nintendo’s Download Play guidance also identifies software-family limits: 3DS games connect only between 3DS-family systems, while DSiWare and DSi games connect only between DSi systems. Check the game’s manual for the multiplayer modes it supports; the Nintendo Download Play overview explains the service’s limits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not buy a DS or 3DS expecting Nintendo’s original online service for DS games to work. Nintendo discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which provided online functionality for certain DS and DSi titles. Nintendo’s legacy DS-card guidance says online features require WEP or no security, not WPA, and its network instructions describe 802.11b or 802.11b/g requirements. Those legacy requirements are not a reason to weaken the security of a modern home network. Details: Nintendo’s Game Card Wireless Security Compatibility page and Nintendo’s network compatibility guidance.

Which 3DS-family system should you consider?
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance applies to the 3DS family, including systems such as the Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL. The right model is a matter of availability, price, and the particular screen and controls you prefer; compatibility documentation alone does not establish which used unit is the best value.
For a second-hand purchase, compare the specific console’s condition and price, and confirm that it reads the game cards you plan to play. If a DS title relies on a GBA-slot accessory, choose a compatible DS model with Slot 2 instead of assuming a 3DS-family console will support it.
Quick Recap
How to choose between DS and 3DS for your games
- Check your game list. Confirm each title is a DS game, and check its manual for GBA-slot accessories or other peripheral requirements.
- Decide whether you want 3DS games too. If you do, a 3DS-family system is the relevant choice; DS-family systems cannot play 3DS game cards.
- Consider how you want DS games to display. On 3DS, they remain 2D, with expanded display by default and an original-resolution launch option.
- Identify the multiplayer mode you need. Look up the game’s manual to distinguish local wireless from online service features; Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for certain DS/DSi games is discontinued.
- Inspect the actual used console. Compare condition and asking price for the units available to you rather than assuming one model is always the better purchase.
