Choose the original Nintendo 3DS if you want optional glasses-free 3D and a folding body. Choose the original Nintendo 2DS if you are happy playing in 2D and prefer its single-piece, non-folding design. Both play Nintendo DS software and Nintendo 3DS titles; the original 2DS displays 3DS games in 2D. If you want a folding 2D system that supports New Nintendo 3DS games, compare the newer New Nintendo 2DS XL instead. These systems are discontinued, so condition, game-region compatibility and the used unit’s total cost matter as much as the model name.
What is the real difference between the original 3DS and 2DS?
The original Nintendo 3DS has a folding clamshell body and a top screen capable of glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. A depth slider lets you adjust the effect or turn it off. Nintendo explains that the effect works by sending different images to the left and right eyes; it is optional, not required to play. Nintendo’s explanation of the 3DS 3D feature.

Yes. The original 2DS is compatible with Nintendo 3DS software, but it displays those games in 2D. It also plays Nintendo DS software. “2DS” describes the display and hardware form, not a separate library of 2DS-only games. The original 2DS cannot play software exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS family, according to Nintendo’s 2DS compatibility FAQ.

The original 3DS also plays Nintendo DS software. If you are buying for a particular game, check that game’s compatibility with the exact console model rather than assuming every system labelled 3DS or 2DS runs it.
When should you choose each model?
Choose the original Nintendo 3DS if 3D or a folding body matters
- You want to try the glasses-free 3D effect, with the option to reduce or disable it.
- You prefer a clamshell design that closes over the screens when carried.
- You are buying an original-system model and have confirmed the specific unit’s condition and game compatibility.
Choose the original Nintendo 2DS if you want a simple 2D system
- You do not need stereoscopic 3D and want to play compatible DS and 3DS games in 2D.
- You prefer the non-folding shape.
- You are comfortable with its simpler controls and lack of support for New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software.
Neither is universally better. For these original models, the decision is chiefly 3D versus 2D and folding versus non-folding; a particular used unit’s condition can outweigh either preference.

Is the New Nintendo 2DS XL different from the original 2DS?
Yes. The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a folding, 2D-only model with a 4.88-inch upper screen. Unlike the original 2DS, it has a C-stick, ZL/ZR buttons and NFC, and supports New Nintendo 3DS software. Nintendo’s product page lists microSD expansion and says the system includes a stylus and a 4GB microSDHC card; check a used listing to confirm those accessories are still included. Nintendo’s New Nintendo 2DS XL specifications.
The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL add New-model controls and processing capability, and their 3D feature uses face recognition for more stable viewing, according to Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS XL information. If New-model-exclusive games are important, do not assume the original 3DS or original 2DS will run them.

What to check before buying a used 3DS-family system
Nintendo no longer manufactures the 3DS family, so buyers are generally choosing among used or refurbished consoles. Compare listings for the exact model and revision, not just “3DS” or “2DS.”
- Region: Nintendo says 3DS-family systems are region locked. Confirm that the console and physical games are from compatible regions before buying. Nintendo’s region-lock information.
- Screen and controls: Ask about screen damage, dead pixels, hinge condition where applicable, button response, and whether the 3D slider works if you are considering a 3DS.
- Included items: Verify the charger, stylus, and memory card rather than assuming they come with the console. Accessories vary by listing and model.
- Seller terms: Check the return window and how the seller describes condition. A lower price may not be worthwhile if the unit cannot be returned or has undisclosed faults.
- Repair options: Nintendo’s service information lists several older models, including the original 3DS and original 2DS, as no longer serviced. Availability can change; check the current service page before relying on a Nintendo repair. Nintendo service availability information.
How discontinued online services affect the choice
Nintendo ended new Nintendo eShop purchases for the 3DS family on March 27, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time; download-code redemption ended April 3, 2023. Online play and other functionality that uses online communication ended April 8, 2024. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded and software updates received “for the foreseeable future,” without giving a guaranteed end date.
