Nikon Z5IIC Preview: Smaller, Screen-First, and Mostly Capable

The Nikon Z5IIC keeps a 24.5MP full-frame sensor but removes the EVF. Here’s what its screen-first design gives up versus the Z5II—and what remains untested.

The Nikon Z5IIC is a new full-frame camera built around a clear compromise: it keeps a 24.5MP sensor and Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, but removes the electronic viewfinder (EVF) in favor of a flatter, screen-first body. Nikon announced it on September 24, 2026, with US suggested prices starting at $1,399.95 body-only and availability planned for mid-October. This is a launch-stage preview, not a hands-on review: the cited early comparison coverage says Z5IIC testing had not yet been completed.

What the “C” changes

Nikon calls the model the Z5IIC and describes “C” as casual. It is not a spelling variant of the Z5II. The design has a flat top and no EVF, with a vari-angle touchscreen as the primary way to compose and review images. Nikon positions it for everyday, travel, candid and touchscreen-oriented shooting; its executive description of the camera as expanding access to full-frame photography is brand positioning, not an independent assessment. Nikon’s September 24, 2026 announcement sets out the design and launch details.

The smaller body comes in black or silver, according to Digital Camera World’s early comparison. Its author reports a body-only weight of 538g for the Z5IIC, versus 620g for the Z5II—a difference of 82g—and notes that the size difference is not dramatic. Those figures are from that comparison, not an independent weighing for this preview.

Does the Nikon Z5IIC have a viewfinder?

No. The Z5IIC has no electronic viewfinder; framing is done on its rear vari-angle touchscreen. This favors touch-based operation and lets the screen rotate for different angles, but it also means composing at eye level is not an option. A rear screen can be harder to see in bright outdoor light, and holding a camera away from the face provides less eye-level support than a viewfinder. Those tradeoffs matter more than the flat-top styling: if you routinely shoot in strong sun, track fast action at the eye, or simply prefer a viewfinder, the Z5II is the more appropriate model to consider.

#1 Best Overall
Nikon Z5 II | Full-Frame mirrorless Stills/Video Camera | USA Model, Black
  • Full-frame Power: 24.5MP BSI-CMOS FX-format sensor and EXPEED 7 processing engine unlock high-resolution, high-speed shooting up to 30fps.
  • Impressive Low-light Performance: Autofocus in near-total darkness with AF detection down to -10EV. Hand-hold shots confidently with up to 7.5 stops of built-in image stabilization.
  • Advanced Autofocus: Automatic detection of 9 subjects: people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, bicycles, motorcycles, trains and airplanes..
  • Bright, Immersive Electronic Viewfinder: Sharp, detailed EVF with a max brightness of 3000 nits–an upgraded shooting experience for those coming from DSLR.
  • Camera to Cloud: Supports Nikon Imaging Cloud service with access to downloadable Picture Controls, automatic image transfer to preferred storage sites and automatic firmware updates.

The display is also a notable spec compromise. Digital Camera World reports 1.04 million dots for the Z5IIC screen, compared with 2.1 million dots on the Z5II. Because the C relies on that screen for every shot, the lower stated resolution is more consequential than it would be on a camera with an EVF as another viewing option. The available coverage does not establish how bright or responsive the Z5IIC display is outdoors.

Nikon Z5IIC vs Z5II: what do you give up?

The Z5II retains the EVF and adds higher stated rear-screen resolution, two SD card slots and a rear joystick. The Z5IIC is lighter in the early comparison and omits those conveniences. Nikon’s own comparison frames the C for touchscreen and everyday use, and the Z5II for EVF preference and frequent sports, wildlife or action photography; these are suggested use cases, not limits on what either camera can shoot. Nikon’s official comparison explains that positioning.

The Z5II column describes the adjacent model, not proof of how the Z5IIC performs. For tested Z5II context only, DPReview’s review of the Z5II discusses its sensor readout and electronic-shutter rolling-shutter caveats, as well as its hybrid-video capabilities. It does not establish the Z5IIC’s rolling shutter, autofocus performance, image quality or battery life. DPReview’s Z5II review was published August 12, 2025, and updated July 10, 2026.

Image-making features and video formats

Nikon specifies a 24.5MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and EXPEED 7 processor. The company lists subject recognition for people, dogs, cats, birds, vehicles, aircraft and fish, five-axis vibration reduction (VR), Scene Modes and Film Grain. These are announced features; the available early coverage does not independently test their accuracy or image results.

Nikon Z5 II with Wide-Angle Zoom Lens | Full-Frame mirrorless Stills/Video Camera with 24-50mm Zoom Lens | Nikon USA Model
  • Advanced Autofocus: Automatic detection of 9 subjects: people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, bicycles, motorcycles, trains and airplanes.

  • Camera to Cloud: Supports Nikon Imaging Cloud service with access to downloadable Picture Controls, automatic image transfer to preferred storage sites and automatic firmware updates.

Nikon claims up to 7.5 stops of VR correction at the frame center and 6 stops at the periphery under its stated CIPA 2024 test setup. These are standardized manufacturer figures, not a promise that every photographer will obtain that much handheld correction; results depend on conditions and technique.

For stills, Nikon lists approximately 14 frames per second continuous shooting and high-speed modes from 15 to 30 fps. Pre-Release Capture can record up to one second before the shutter release in High-Speed Frame Capture+ mode, subject to Nikon’s JPEG and card conditions. The announcement’s footnotes define the limits; the headline rates should not be read as a guarantee of sustained shooting with every file type or card.

Nikon Z5 II Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm f/4-6.3 Lens Bundle with 128GB UHS-II SDXC Card + UV Filter + Card Reader + Card Case + Lens Cap Keeper + Cleaning Kit + Camera Bag (10 Items)
  • The Nikon Z5 II upgrades its predecessor with improved processing speed, subject recognition AF, and low-light performance
  • A large 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD screen doubles the brightness for clear and vivid image playback and live view shooting
  • Capable of recording more than just stills, the Z5 II has improved its video capture abilities as well
  • All-in-one zoom covers wide-angle to telephoto fields of view and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras
  • Two aspherical elements and one aspherical ED element is used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering

Video includes 4K UHD up to 60p, but Nikon specifies a DX-format crop at that frame rate. Full HD at 120p and in-camera slow motion are also listed. N-RAW recording to SD is supported, but Nikon notes format restrictions and recommends V90 cards for N-RAW. If 4K60 framing, rolling shutter, or long recording sessions are central to your work, the announcement alone does not answer how the camera behaves in practice.

Who should consider the Z5IIC?

Choose it if screen-first shooting suits you

  • You want a full-frame camera with a vari-angle touchscreen and do not need an EVF.
  • You value a flatter body and the reported lower weight, and mainly photograph everyday subjects, travel or candid scenes.
  • A single SD slot fits your storage and backup workflow.
  • You want the announced lower starting price and can accept that the screen, controls and card setup are less elaborate than the Z5II’s.

Lean toward the Z5II if you rely on an EVF or redundancy

  • You prefer eye-level framing, especially in bright conditions or when following action.
  • You want two SD slots for redundancy or workflow flexibility.
  • You value the higher stated screen resolution, rear joystick or third user setting (U3).
  • Your decision depends on how reliably subject detection performs, practical battery life, 4K60 crop and rolling shutter, or handling with larger lenses. Those Z5IIC behaviors are not established by the early cited coverage.

The Z5IIC’s appeal is therefore conditional: it pairs full-frame flexibility with a simpler, screen-led body, while asking buyers to give up an EVF and several higher-end conveniences. Nikon’s launch specifications make it promising on paper, but independent hands-on testing is still needed to judge the display outdoors, autofocus in real scenes, video behavior and everyday handling.
