Nike’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) strategy is one part of a two-channel model: Nike sells through its own stores and digital platforms as well as through wholesale accounts. The company is now rebalancing those channels, repositioning Nike Brand Digital as a full-price platform while reinvesting in wholesale and improving how Nike appears in physical retail. Recent results show why execution matters: Direct revenue fell in fiscal 2026 and again in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, while wholesale revenue rose in fiscal 2026.
What Nike means by direct-to-consumer
Nike defines NIKE Direct as sales through company-owned retail stores and its digital platforms, which it also calls Nike Brand Digital. Wholesale is the other main distribution channel and includes independent distributors, licensees, sales representatives, and retailers. Nike also offers interactive consumer services and experiences. Nike’s fiscal year ends May 31. NIKE, Inc. channel definitions.

The distinction is about how products reach consumers, not a disclosed comparison of channel profitability. Nike’s stated broader aim is long-term profitable growth through sport-led innovation, stronger consumer connections, and compelling experiences online and in stores. Those are company objectives, not evidence that either channel produces more profit. NIKE, Inc. strategy.

Nike says its approach is intended to deepen consumer connections, tailor products to individual needs, and create long-term growth opportunities. Its stated priorities include leading with sport, accelerating product innovation, building demand around key launches and sports moments, and elevating the marketplace. These describe what Nike is trying to accomplish; the filings do not quantify a Direct-specific customer lifetime value, first-party data advantage, or profit margin. - Solid rubber sole is durable and provides traction over various surfaces.
Company-owned stores and digital platforms give Nike direct points of contact with shoppers, while wholesale extends its reach through outside accounts. The trade-off is practical: Nike must attract traffic to its own platforms and stores, whereas wholesale partners provide another route to consumers. Nike’s published channel revenue does not establish which route is more profitable.
What Nike’s channel results show
The figures below are Nike-reported revenue, not a channel-level profit comparison. Currency-neutral changes adjust for foreign-exchange effects; reported changes reflect the figures as reported. Fiscal 2026 ended May 31, 2026, and the first quarter of fiscal 2027 ended August 31, 2026.

| Period | NIKE Direct | Nike Brand wholesale | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2025 | $18.8 billion; down 13% reported and 12% currency-neutral. Nike Brand Digital fell 20%; owned-store sales were flat. | $25.9 billion; down 7% reported and 6% currency-neutral. | Nike attributed the Direct decline to lower Nike Brand Digital revenue. NIKE, Inc., fiscal 2025 results. |
| Fiscal 2026 | $17.7 billion; down 6% reported and 8% currency-neutral. Digital fell 12%, and Nike-owned store revenue fell 4%. | $27.5 billion; up 6% reported and 4% currency-neutral. | NIKE, Inc. revenue was $46.4 billion, flat reported and down 2% currency-neutral. Nike attributed lower Direct revenue primarily to lower traffic. NIKE, Inc., fiscal 2026 results. |
| First quarter fiscal 2027 | $4.1 billion, versus $4.5 billion in the prior-year quarter; down 9% currency-neutral. Digital fell 13%, and Nike store sales fell 5%. | $6.8 billion; flat reported and down 1% currency-neutral. | The decline continued across both Direct components, with a larger drop in digital. NIKE, Inc., first-quarter fiscal 2027 results. |
The pattern is a reset, not a simple verdict that DTC is inherently better or worse. Direct revenue declined in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026, while wholesale rebounded in fiscal 2026; Direct weakness continued into the first quarter of fiscal 2027. These results do not show that a shift toward Direct alone caused Nike’s broader performance.
Why Nike is rebalancing its marketplace
Nike says it is repositioning Nike Brand Digital as a full-price platform and reinvesting in wholesale distribution. It is also investing in how its brands appear in physical retail. The company describes product management, marketplace management, and brand management as connected priorities: adjust the product mix, improve the marketplace, and support launches and sports moments with demand creation. Inventory actions are part of that work. Nike says it has used increased markdowns across Direct and higher discounts and sales returns with wholesale partners to reduce inventory and make room for new products. That approach may help clear stock, but the disclosures do not establish whether it will produce sustained demand or stronger channel economics.
Risks and limits of the DTC approach
Demand and product fit
Nike says demand changes with the popularity and availability of sports, seasons, geography, and consumer preferences. If products and categories do not adjust to those shifts, sales and profitability could be materially affected. NIKE, Inc. disclosed risks.

Marketplace balance
A greater reliance on owned stores and digital platforms requires Nike to generate traffic through those channels. Wholesale adds outside distribution, but it also involves partners and the discounts or returns Nike identifies as part of its inventory actions. The recent channel results help explain the renewed emphasis on balance; they do not prove that wholesale or Direct is inherently more profitable. - Direct and wholesale growth: See whether Direct stabilizes and whether wholesale growth continues. Compare reported and currency-neutral changes rather than relying on only one measure.
- Digital versus stores: Nike reports these separately. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, both declined, with digital falling more. NIKE, Inc., first-quarter fiscal 2027 results.
- Discounting and gross margin: Nike identifies discounts and channel mix as factors affecting margins. Fiscal 2026 gross margin was 42.9%, up 20 basis points, but that company-wide figure is not a Direct profitability measure. Nike said fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter gross margin included a large expected tariff-recovery benefit, making that quarter an unusual comparison. NIKE, Inc. marketplace priorities; NIKE, Inc., fiscal 2026 results.
- Inventory and product mix: Nike reported $7.5 billion in inventory at fiscal 2026 year-end, flat year over year. Watch whether inventory health improves without persistent markdowns as the company rebalances its product portfolio. NIKE, Inc., fiscal 2026 results; NIKE, Inc. marketplace priorities.
- Demand across regions: Nike pointed to weakness in Greater China and EMEA in fiscal 2026. A broad-based improvement would be more informative than strength in only one territory. NIKE, Inc., fiscal 2026 results.
What the results cannot tell you
The figures establish how revenue changed by channel, but not the causal effect of Nike’s DTC strategy on profitability, loyalty, or market share. Nike does not disclose a channel-level profit comparison in the cited results, so the company-wide gross margin cannot be used to claim that Direct or wholesale has the higher margin.
Nike CEO Elliott Hill described the company’s actions this way: “In fiscal 2026, we took decisive actions to strengthen the foundation of NIKE, Inc. and reposition our business for long-term growth,” NIKE, Inc. executive statement.
