NHRA drag racing has more than 200 vehicle classes grouped into 15 eliminators. The professional headliners are Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle; the wider program also includes Top Alcohol, Pro Mod, Comp, Stock, Super classes and fast bracket categories. What separates them is not just speed: class rules govern vehicle form, engines, weight and modifications, while the race format determines how competitors line up and win.
How NHRA classes and race formats work
A class is a rules package for eligible vehicles, not a synonym for professional status or a particular race format. NHRA says eligibility can depend on vehicle type, engine size, weight, allowable modifications and aerodynamics. Its categories use three broad formats:

- Heads-up: Competitors in the category start together. NHRA lists Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Pro Mod as heads-up categories.
- Handicap starts: Starts are adjusted so vehicles with different expected performance can compete. NHRA uses this format for Comp, Super Stock and Stock.
- Bracket-style: Each driver chooses a dial-in time, an estimate of the run, and races the opponent; running quicker than the dial-in is a breakout. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman use this format.
That distinction helps explain why two cars that look very different can compete in the same broad group, and why similar-looking cars may race under different rules.

| Category | Vehicle and power | Format and representative figures |
|---|---|---|
| Top Fuel | Long, open-wheel dragster; centered driver; supercharged, fuel-injected nitro V8. | Heads-up. NHRA’s general overview describes 500-cubic-inch engines, 2,330-pound race-ready weight, about 11,000 horsepower, runs under 3.7 seconds and speeds above 330 mph. |
| Funny Car | Shorter-wheelbase car with a lightweight carbon-fiber body resembling a production coupe or sedan; driver sits behind a powertrain similar to Top Fuel. | Heads-up. NHRA describes performance in the 3.8-second range and speeds above 330 mph. |
| Pro Stock | Production-car appearance over a purpose-built tube chassis. NHRA’s overview describes electronic fuel injection, spec gasoline and a maximum 500-cubic-inch engine. | Heads-up. NHRA lists a 2,350-pound minimum weight and more than 1,300 horsepower. |
| Pro Stock Motorcycle | Purpose-built motorcycles with specialized chassis and aerodynamic replica bodywork; entries include V-twins and inline-fours and use spec gasoline. | Professional heads-up racing. NHRA’s overview does not give a representative elapsed time or speed. |
Top Fuel versus Funny Car
Both use nitro-powered V8 concepts, but their silhouettes and driver positions differ. A Top Fuel car is an exposed, long-wheelbase dragster with the driver centered between the wheels. A Funny Car puts the driver behind the engine beneath a body styled to evoke a production car. NHRA’s figures are general category descriptions, not records or a guarantee of what every run will achieve.

What “Pro Stock” means
Pro Stock looks more like a showroom car than the other professional categories, which is why it is often nicknamed “factory hot rods.” The resemblance is chiefly in the body: beneath it is a specialized race car built to a tightly controlled specification. NHRA announced that for the 2027 rules, Pro Stock will bring back hood scoops and replace the single forward-facing throttle body with two top-mounted four-barrel-style throttle bodies; electronic fuel injection remains. Those are announced 2027 changes, not the 2026 configuration.
Major classes beyond the professional four
Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
These classes resemble their nitro counterparts but use different fuel and power combinations. NHRA’s class overview describes Top Alcohol Dragster options including supercharged methanol or injected nitromethane; its Funny Car overview describes methanol and a three-speed transmission. In November 2025, NHRA announced a supercharged nitromethane combination for both classes beginning in 2026, alongside traditional options. The same announcement scheduled 24 combined Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car events across the Mission Foods and Lucas Oil series in 2026.

Pro Mod
Pro Mod is a doorslammer category: drivers sit inside cars with doors, and entries may use late-model or classic body styles. NHRA’s 2026 series feature describes combinations using superchargers, turbochargers or nitrous oxide. Its entries can look and work quite differently while racing within the same broad category.

These are multi-class groups with handicap starts and class indexes. Comp accommodates a wide range of vehicles and engine combinations, including dragsters, altereds, roadsters, coupes, sedans, sport compacts and trucks. Super Stock permits substantial modification while retaining specified original components. Stock has tighter limits on engine and body changes and keeps more of the factory configuration. The handicap and index system helps unlike combinations race against each other.

Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street
These are heads-up index categories: competitors aim to run close to the class target without running quicker and breaking out. NHRA’s general overview gives these index values:
| Category | NHRA overview index | Typical vehicle form |
|---|---|---|
| Super Comp | 8.90 seconds | Primarily dragsters |
| Super Gas | 9.90 seconds | Mainly full-bodied cars and roadsters |
| Super Street | 10.90 seconds | Full-bodied cars |
These are the overview’s stated targets; consult the current NHRA rulebook for current eligibility and index details.

Top Dragster and Top Sportsman
These fast bracket categories use dial-ins and breakout rules. Top Dragster is for open-wheel entries; Top Sportsman is for full-bodied cars. Because the start is handicapped to account for each driver’s chosen dial-in, vehicles with different expected elapsed times can race competitively.

Top Fuel is the clearest answer if “fastest” means the headline category associated with the shortest elapsed times and highest speeds in NHRA’s general class descriptions: its overview gives under 3.7 seconds and more than 330 mph. Funny Cars are also described above 330 mph, with runs in the 3.8-second range. These are broad descriptive figures, not a claim about a current record or a direct ranking of every class on every track.

What was scheduled for the 2026 season?
NHRA announced Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock for all 20 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series events in 2026. It announced Pro Stock Motorcycle at 14 events, plus a separate Sonoma All-Star Callout. These are season schedule announcements, not a claim that every event has already taken place or that every category runs at every NHRA meet.
Class rules, indexes and schedules can change. NHRA’s class overview is a useful introduction, but it is not a complete rulebook or a substitute for event-specific regulations.
