In the NHL, Injured Reserve (IR) is for a player who is injured, ill or disabled and cannot perform hockey duties under the club’s medical standards. A Non-Roster Player, as described in the available older collective bargaining agreement (CBA), is unavailable for a reason other than injury, illness or disability and requires Commissioner approval. These labels affect roster accounting, but they are not interchangeable—and “Injured and/or Non-Roster” on a report may be only a combined heading.
What does Injured Reserve mean in the NHL?
The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines describe IR as a designation for a player who is injured, disabled or ill and unable to perform as a hockey player. The club’s medical staff determines whether the player’s condition warrants IR under the club’s medical standards; the guidelines specify that this follows the player’s initial physical examination for that season.

IR changes how the player is counted on the roster. Under the guidelines, an IR player does not count against the regular-season 23-player playing-roster limit, and the club may replace that player on its NHL roster. That 23-player limit applies during the regular season through the trade deadline, as described on the guidelines page.

A player placed on IR cannot compete in an NHL game for at least seven days. The rule concerns game eligibility, not isolation from the team: the guidelines say IR players may attend club meetings and meals, travel with the club and practice.

What does Non-Roster Player mean?
The available CBA text defines a Non-Roster Player as someone unavailable to play for reasons other than injury, illness or disability. Its examples include the birth of a child and attending a funeral. Under that text, designation requires Commissioner approval; the player does not count against the Active Roster limit, and the club may replace the player.
This definition and its approval and roster rules come from an older CBA PDF, not a verified 2026–27 operative agreement. The exact current CBA wording is therefore not established here. The PDF is available from the NHL Players’ Association’s CBA page.

How to read “Injured and/or Non-Roster” on a roster report
A combined heading does not establish that every player beneath it shares one status. In the Flyers’ 2026–27 opening-night announcement, Denver Barkey is listed as Injured Reserve while Helge Grans is listed as Injured Non-Roster. Detroit’s September 2026 announcement also distinguishes Injured Reserve, injured non-roster and immigration non-roster. Read the individual transaction label in the team announcement rather than treating the umbrella heading as a precise designation.
