Then check whether the relay actually connects upstream, confirm the RTMP or RTMPS endpoint, and follow YouTube’s separate preview and Go live steps. Starting Nginx alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a feed.
1. Confirm the YouTube stream URL and key
Open the relevant broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy its current Stream URL and stream key into the upstream publishing configuration used by your encoder or Nginx relay. YouTube requires both values for an encoder to send a feed. Follow the official YouTube encoder setup guide.

Do not assume a key remembered from an earlier broadcast is still the right one. You can reset a stream key in Studio; after resetting it, update the relay configuration with the replacement. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Check the relay’s status and logs to answer two separate questions: did the local encoder or publisher connect to Nginx, and did Nginx successfully publish to YouTube? A running Nginx process or a working local ingest does not prove that the upstream connection succeeded.

- If the local publisher never reaches Nginx, investigate the local ingest address, port, and publisher configuration.
- If the publisher reaches Nginx but the upstream publish fails, inspect the configured YouTube endpoint, key, protocol, and the relay’s connection errors.
- If the available logs do not distinguish these stages, collect the relevant configuration and error output before changing directives. YouTube’s official setup documentation does not define Nginx-specific directives or log signatures, so the exact relay-side cause cannot be identified without those details.
Redact the stream key before sharing configuration or logs.
3. Check RTMP versus RTMPS
Use the protocol and endpoint actually provided in Live Control Room. An RTMP URL and an RTMPS URL are not interchangeable: if the relay is set to RTMPS, it must connect using the Studio-provided RTMPS endpoint and a compatible TLS setup.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says the connection uses TLS on port 443. Google’s developer documentation also specifies the correct hostname for SNI authentication. If the relay reports an SSL error or connection timeout, compare its URL, protocol, port, and hostname with YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting instructions and RTMPS ingestion guide. Do not switch to a guessed endpoint; copy the one Studio supplies.

For a scheduled encoder broadcast, starting the sender is not the final publishing step. YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the feed preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. If the preview appears but viewers still cannot watch, check the broadcast’s privacy setting; a private or unlisted stream is not public.

- Start the encoder or relay that publishes to YouTube.
- Open the scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room and wait for its preview.
- When the preview is present, click Go live if the event has not already been made live.
- Check the stream’s privacy setting if the broadcast is live in Studio but unavailable to the intended audience.

5. Read YouTube’s status before changing relay settings
If you use the YouTube LiveStreams API or a tool that reports its state, interpret the status as YouTube’s view of the incoming feed. In the LiveStreams API reference, active means YouTube is receiving data; inactive means it is not. States such as ready, created, and error are distinct, and health information can help narrow down the issue.

These values show whether YouTube sees data; they do not identify which Nginx directive or local network setting caused a failure. Use the status alongside relay logs rather than treating it as a diagnosis by itself.
6. If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, refresh the key
YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions for third-party encoder startup errors direct users to obtain a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Resetting the key only helps if every sender using the old key is changed to the replacement. Follow YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting steps.
