There is no single monthly price for running an Nginx RTMP server in India for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Your bill depends chiefly on bitrate, whether the VPS only relays an already encoded feed or also encodes it, and the transfer allowance and overage rules for the server’s region. Published examples include AWS Lightsail bundles priced in US dollars and an India-based provider’s advertised starting price in rupees, but these are not equivalent plans or a confirmed tax-inclusive total.
What determines the monthly cost?
Transfer volume is often the key constraint
At a steady bitrate of B Mbps, a stream running for 30 days moves about B × 324 GB in one direction, using decimal units and excluding protocol overhead. An Nginx relay that receives a full-rate feed and sends a full-rate copy may use transfer in both directions. At 8 Mbps, that is about 2.59 TB in one direction, or about 5.18 TB combined if both legs count. These are calculations from bitrate and runtime, not a provider benchmark. Actual usage depends on the feed and the host’s traffic accounting.

AWS says both inbound and outbound instance transfer count toward a Lightsail plan’s allowance; excess outbound transfer can incur charges. Check the chosen provider’s specific accounting rules rather than assuming a transfer allowance applies only to traffic sent to YouTube.
Region changes the allowance and overage exposure
AWS lists standard Lightsail transfer allowances, but Mumbai plans receive half the general allowance. AWS states a Mumbai instance overage rate of $0.13/GB for excess outbound data. The regional allowance and overage rule can materially change the effective price of a long-running stream, so compare the actual region, not just the bundle headline.

Relaying and encoding are different workloads
A relay forwards an already encoded signal. Encoding or transcoding adds CPU work, and a server plan that handles one workload should not be presumed suitable for the other. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations describe the stream sent to ingest, not the VPS size needed to produce it; the available figures do not establish a guaranteed minimum VPS specification for either setup.
Self-managed server or managed service
With a VPS, you remain responsible for setup and ongoing server administration and monitoring. A managed cloud streaming service is a different option for someone who would rather not operate a server; compare its current features and terms separately rather than treating it as an equivalent VPS plan.

Published price examples—and what they include
The examples below are published figures captured in 2026, not a provider ranking, quote, or guarantee that a plan will sustain a particular 24/7 workload. AWS figures are US-dollar list prices; Inservers advertises a starting rupee price. They do not establish a directly comparable total after taxes, network terms, and workload are considered.

The AWS bundles list general transfer allowances, with a Mumbai reduction; the Inservers figure is a provider-advertised starting price, and the cited description does not establish equivalent transfer terms. Estimate bandwidth before choosing a VPS
Use bitrate as the starting point
YouTube Help recommends H.264 bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a claim that a specific VPS can encode at those settings.

The 8 Mbps row reflects the YouTube recommendation for H.264 720p at 30 fps; 14 Mbps is the recommendation for H.264 1080p at 30 fps. Transfer totals are arithmetic for a continuous 30-day stream, in decimal units and before overhead. The relay column assumes a full-rate input and a full-rate output and that the provider counts both legs. Confirm how your host accounts for them.

Calculate your own workload
- Choose the actual output bitrate. Use the bitrate you intend to send to YouTube, not the resolution alone.
- Estimate one-way traffic. For a 30-day month, multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 324 to estimate decimal GB in one direction.
- Account for the input path. If the VPS receives a full-rate feed and relays it, estimate another full-rate leg, then check whether the provider counts inbound transfer against the allowance.
- Compare with the region’s allowance. For AWS Lightsail, account for Mumbai’s half-size allowance and check the current overage policy for outbound traffic.
- Confirm the final bill terms. Check taxes, overage charges, throttling or suspension terms, and the selected region before committing.
What to verify before ordering
- Location: identify the actual data-center region and the allowance that applies there.
- Traffic accounting: ask whether inbound and outbound bytes both count, and whether traffic to YouTube is treated differently.
- Overage behavior: establish the price per GB and whether excess use is billed, throttled, or suspended.
- Workload: state clearly whether you need a relay only or encoding/transcoding as well; do not infer capacity from a CPU or RAM figure alone.
- Operations: decide who will configure, monitor, and recover the server if the process or connection fails.
- Total cost: verify the current plan price, taxes, payment currency, and network terms. The published examples above are not an all-in cost comparison.
Can Nginx RTMP relay a stream to YouTube?
Yes. Nginx RTMP can be used as a relay for an already encoded stream, but a VPS price by itself does not establish that a particular configuration will sustain your chosen bitrate or run without interruption. YouTube Help recommends sending streams to YouTube Live over RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. A relay setup therefore needs to account for both the incoming feed and the outgoing YouTube connection, along with server administration and recovery responsibility.

Common cost-estimation mistakes
- Looking only at the VPS fee: a low monthly bundle price may not cover the transfer generated by a continuous stream.
- Using the non-Mumbai allowance for a Mumbai instance: AWS lists half the general transfer allowance for Mumbai plans.
- Counting only the YouTube output: a relay also receives the source feed, and provider accounting may count inbound traffic too.
- Comparing unlike advertised prices: an AWS USD bundle and a vendor’s INR starting price do not establish equivalent resources, transfer terms, taxes, or total cost.
- Assuming relay capacity proves encoding capacity: forwarding an encoded feed and producing or transcoding one are distinct workloads.
