To stream through NGINX to YouTube, configure two separate links: your encoder publishes to an NGINX RTMP application, then an RTMPS-capable relay sends the video to YouTube using the URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A basic nginx-rtmp-module configuration creates the local RTMP listener; it does not, by itself, prove that the YouTube-facing connection is encrypted or supports YouTube’s TLS and SNI requirements.
How the NGINX-to-YouTube streaming path works
Think of this as two connections, not one:
- Encoder to NGINX: OBS or another publisher sends an RTMP stream to an NGINX server and an application configured in NGINX.
- NGINX-side relay to YouTube: A relay component forwards the stream to the RTMPS address and stream key supplied by YouTube.
The upstream nginx-rtmp-module README documents RTMP listeners and generic RTMP push/pull relay features. Its generic push examples do not establish that a given build can connect securely to YouTube. For the YouTube hop, use a component whose support for TLS, port 443, and SNI is established.

Choose a module that matches your NGINX build
The community arut/nginx-rtmp-module is a third-party module for NGINX. NGINX Plus also offers a separately packaged RTMP dynamic module. These are distinct distribution paths, and their installation steps, compatibility, update process, and capabilities should not be assumed to match.

| NGINX distribution | What to check | Installation direction |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX Plus | Use the package and instructions for the installed NGINX Plus release and operating system. The F5 NGINX RTMP module guide covers this packaged dynamic module. | Install the matching package, load ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, test the configuration, and reload NGINX. |
| NGINX Open Source | Check the exact NGINX build, operating system, module revision, and whether that module build supports static or dynamic loading. The NGINX configure documentation describes third-party module build options. | Build against the compatible NGINX source with --add-module, or use a compatible dynamically built module when supported. |
Do not load a shared module compiled for a different NGINX build and assume it will work. F5’s package instructions apply to NGINX Plus, not automatically to NGINX Open Source.

Configure a local RTMP application
This minimal example follows the upstream module’s live-listener shape. It accepts an RTMP publisher at port 1935 and defines an application named live; it is not a complete YouTube relay configuration.
rtmp {
server {
listen 1935;
application live {
live on;
}
}
}
Place the rtmp {} block in the NGINX configuration context supported by your build. If the module is dynamic, load it in the main context as required by that distribution before using the RTMP directives. Then validate and reload with the commands appropriate to your installation:

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
nginx -t
nginx -s reload
On systems where NGINX is managed by a service manager, use its reload mechanism after a successful test. A successful nginx -t checks configuration syntax and module loading; it does not verify YouTube credentials, outbound TLS, SNI, or that a stream reaches YouTube.

Match the publisher URL to the application name
The publisher URL has the general form rtmp://host/app/name. The app segment must match an application {} block. In this example, use live as the application segment; the trailing name is interpreted by the application. For example, a publisher might use rtmp://your-server.example/live/channel1, replacing the hostname with your server’s address.

Limit access to the local listener
Port 1935 is the upstream example’s listener value, not a requirement to expose that port publicly. Restrict publishing to intended clients using network controls and the module’s available publish access controls, such as allow/deny rules. Avoid placing stream keys or other secrets in public configuration examples, logs, or shared screenshots. The module README also documents HTTP callbacks for publish and play events where an application needs additional controls.
Connect the relay to YouTube with RTMPS
YouTube’s secure ingest route is RTMPS: RTMP carried through an SSL/TLS connection. Google requires the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube ingest server and application path, port 443, a TLS connection, and SNI set to the destination hostname. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream’s Stream settings.
- Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL and the associated stream key. Use the exact values shown for that stream; do not substitute a generic endpoint or copy another stream’s key. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your live stream.
- Configure an RTMPS-capable relay or encoder to forward the stream to that destination. Confirm that the implementation connects over TLS on port 443 and sends SNI for the ingest hostname.
- Keep the stream key secret. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before using the stream again.
- Start the local publisher, then start or verify the relay. Confirm the incoming stream in Live Control Room before taking the broadcast live.
If using YouTube’s API rather than copying the URL manually, the RTMPS address is provided in cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress; consult the YouTube Live Streams API documentation. The URL and key are specific to the stream setup.
Why a generic NGINX push directive is not enough
The module’s documented push examples demonstrate generic RTMP relay behavior. They are not proof that a particular module version can perform YouTube’s secure RTMPS connection, negotiate TLS on port 443, and send the required SNI hostname. Do not paste an invented YouTube push URL or key into a configuration and assume it is secure. Verify those transport capabilities for the exact relay implementation you deploy.

Troubleshoot YouTube RTMPS connection failures
Check the connection in this order; the failure may be on the YouTube-facing relay even when the encoder-to-NGINX link is working.
| Symptom | Likely check | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| SSL or certificate error | The relay may be using the ordinary RTMP address, the wrong endpoint or path, or a port other than 443. | Copy the RTMPS URL from the current stream’s Live Control Room settings and connect on port 443 using TLS. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide advises checking the URL and port 443 for SSL errors. |
| Connection times out | A common cause is sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS server, or a network/firewall blocking the intended outbound connection. | Use the rtmps scheme and a TLS-capable relay; verify outbound access to port 443. Google notes that cleartext RTMP sent to an RTMPS endpoint can result in timeouts. |
| TLS connection starts but authentication fails | SNI may be missing or set to something other than the destination hostname. | Configure the TLS client to send SNI matching the YouTube ingest hostname. The hostname is needed for server authentication. |
| YouTube does not receive video, but NGINX accepts the publisher | The local application path, relay destination, stream key, or forwarding process may be wrong or inactive. | Confirm the publisher URL’s application segment matches the NGINX application {} name, then recheck the exact RTMPS URL and matching key in Live Control Room. |
| NGINX reports an unknown RTMP directive or fails to start | The module may not be installed or loaded, or it may not match the NGINX build. | Check the package/build compatibility, module load directive and configuration context; run nginx -t before reloading. |
Optional module features you may not need
The module also documents stream relay, HLS and DASH output, recording, HTTP callbacks, statistics output, and FFmpeg integrations for transcoding. These are separate functions, not prerequisites for forwarding a stream to YouTube. Add them only when your architecture needs them.
- HLS/DASH: Useful for generating local HTTP delivery outputs; the README’s HLS example expects H.264 video and AAC audio. Check codec compatibility across your actual chain.
- Recording: An optional local recording function, not a requirement for YouTube ingest.
- Callbacks and statistics: Optional operational or access-control features; protect any endpoints and output exposed by your configuration.
- FFmpeg integration: Optional transcoding capability. Do not assume it is active or required simply because the module supports an integration.
