A 404 from an NGINX location block does not automatically mean the block is invalid. The request may be reaching a different server or location, mapping to the wrong filesystem path, looking for a missing index file, deliberately ending at try_files ... =404, or never reaching the application that should handle the route.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Fix the failure in this order: prove which virtual host and location handled the request, calculate the exact path NGINX tested, check directory indexing, inspect try_files fallbacks, then separate static files from proxied application routes. If the request goes through NGINX Ingress, also verify that a declared child path handles the URI.

NGINX chooses a server {} block from the connection details and request metadata, then selects a location for the URI. Only after those choices does it serve a file, perform a try_files test, or pass the request to an upstream. A syntactically valid block can therefore appear to be ignored.
There are several independent 404 sources:
- The request used a different
Host, port, TLS listener, or URI than expected. - A more specific exact, prefix, or regular-expression location won the selection.
rootor an alias-style mapping produced a disk path where the file does not exist.- A directory request had no configured index file.
try_filesexhausted its candidates and reached an intentional=404.- A static location intercepted a URL that should have been sent to an application.
- An upstream application, rather than NGINX, generated the 404.
- An NGINX Ingress parent path matched, but no declared child route handled the requested URI.
Do not change root until you know which of these occurred.

Step 1: prove which server and location handled the request
Confirm the virtual host
NGINX can select a different server block when the request has an unexpected host name, listening port, or TLS SNI value. Test with the same host and scheme that a browser uses:
nginx -T
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/app
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/app/
The nginx -T output shows the effective configuration after included files are expanded. Check the intended server_name, listen directives, and whether the request is arriving over HTTP or HTTPS. A local curl test without the production Host header can select the default server and lead to a misleading 404.
Apply location precedence correctly
NGINX compares the URI with all locations. An exact match such as location = /health handles only that one URI. Prefix locations match paths, and the longest matching prefix is selected provisionally. Regular-expression locations can then take precedence over that prefix. A longest prefix marked ^~ prevents regular-expression locations from overriding it.
| Location form | What it matches | Important 404 implication |
|---|---|---|
location = /path |
One exact URI | /path/ is a different request. |
location /path/ |
URIs beginning with that prefix | The trailing slash is part of the match. |
location ^~ /path/ |
Longest prefix, protected from regex override | Useful when a static subtree must not be captured by a regex location. |
location ~ pattern |
Case-sensitive regular expression | Can override an ordinary prefix location. |
location ~* pattern |
Case-insensitive regular expression | May capture extensions or paths unexpectedly. |
Inspect every matching block in the virtual host, including regex locations inherited from included files. A broad regex for file extensions can catch a request before the prefix block you edited. Conversely, a broad location / can run a static-file try_files rule for an application route.
Test the slash variants separately
/app and /app/ are not interchangeable during location selection. A slash-terminated prefix is also relevant to NGINX’s special redirect behavior when proxying: a request for the prefix without its slash can be redirected before the proxied handler is used. Always test both forms and record the status, Location header, and response body:
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/app
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/app/
Follow redirects only after examining the first response; otherwise a redirect can hide which URI produced the original status.

Step 2: calculate the filesystem path instead of guessing
How root constructs a path
With root /var/www/site; and location /assets/, a request for /assets/app.css is tested at:
/var/www/site/assets/app.css
root appends the complete request URI to the directory. If the real file is /var/www/site/app.css, the configuration is asking for the wrong path and will return 404 even though the file exists elsewhere.
How an alias-style mapping differs
An alias replaces the location prefix with the configured directory. For a subtree, the trailing slashes must be deliberate:
location /assets/ {
alias /var/www/site/;
}
Here, /assets/app.css maps to /var/www/site/app.css, not /var/www/site/assets/app.css. Use an alias-style mapping only when that replacement is what the directory layout requires. Mixing an alias with a location that does not have a corresponding trailing slash is a common source of surprising paths and redirects.
Verify the resulting path on disk
- Write down the exact request URI, including case and trailing slash.
- Identify the selected location and its
rootoralias. - Apply the mapping rule character by character to derive the disk path.
- Check the path on the server with a directory listing or an equivalent file test.
- Check ownership and execute permission on every parent directory after confirming the path.
- Check case: Linux filesystems normally treat
App.cssandapp.cssas different names.
Do not diagnose a permissions problem from a guessed path. First establish the exact path NGINX tried to open.
Step 3: handle directory requests and index files
A URI ending in / is treated as a directory request. NGINX checks the filename configured by the index directive; the documented example uses index.html. If that file is absent at the calculated directory path, NGINX returns 404 by default. The NGINX static-content documentation states: “If it does not, NGINX returns HTTP code 404 (Not Found) by default.”

For example:
location /docs/ {
root /var/www/site;
index index.html;
}
A request for /docs/ checks /var/www/site/docs/index.html. It does not automatically search the parent directory or choose an arbitrary HTML file.
Choose an intentional directory behavior:
- Add the configured index file at the calculated path.
- Change
indexto the filename your site actually generates. - Use an application fallback if the directory URL belongs to a front controller.
- Enable
autoindex ononly when exposing a directory listing is deliberate and acceptable.
An index failure is distinct from a location mismatch. Confirm the selected block and calculated directory before changing either.
Step 4: audit try_files from left to right
Understand the ordered test
try_files tests candidates in order using the current root or alias mapping. The first existing file or directory wins. If no candidate exists, the final parameter determines what happens. In this common configuration, the 404 is intentional:
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
NGINX checks a file at $uri, then a directory at $uri/. If neither exists, =404 ends the request with status 404. This is correct for a purely static site and wrong for an application whose routes do not correspond to local files.
Use a real fallback for a single-page application
A client-side router usually needs unknown paths to return the application shell:
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html;
}
The fallback URI must itself be handled by a location and must exist at the configured root. If /index.html is missing, the fallback simply creates another 404. Avoid a fallback that internally redirects back into the same rule without changing the request; that can create an internal redirect loop.

Send misses to a named backend location
When the application should process routes that are not files, use a named fallback:
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ @backend;
}
location @backend {
proxy_pass http://backend.example.com;
}
The named location is reached only after the file and directory tests fail. Define it explicitly and verify that the upstream name, port, network access, and application route are valid. A named fallback avoids pretending that every application URL is a local file.
Check for fallback loops and hidden handlers
- Confirm that the fallback URI or named location is actually declared.
- Check whether the fallback is caught by another location with a second
try_files. - Inspect internal redirect counts and error-log messages for loops.
- Test a known file and a known application route separately.
Step 5: separate static content from application routes
A static location needs a valid path and an existing file. An application location needs a pass directive that sends the request to the process serving the application. For an HTTP backend, NGINX requires proxy_pass inside the location; the NGINX reverse-proxy documentation describes this as the directive used to pass a request to an HTTP proxied server.
Static subtree
location ^~ /assets/ {
root /var/www/site;
try_files $uri =404;
}
The ^~ keeps a regular-expression location from taking over this static subtree. The requested file must exist below /var/www/site/assets/.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProxied application subtree
location /api/ {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
This block does not search the local filesystem. If the backend returns 404, the status is an application response, not evidence that NGINX could not find a file. Compare the response headers and body with a direct request to the backend where possible.
Keep a broad static rule from swallowing app URLs
A configuration such as location / { try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } can intercept every route before an application receives it. Narrow the static location to the directories that truly contain files, or replace the terminal 404 with the appropriate URI or named upstream fallback. Use the corresponding pass directive for FastCGI, uWSGI, or gRPC applications instead of forcing those routes through filesystem checks.
Best Value
Step 6: check NGINX Ingress path declarations
NGINX Ingress adds another matching layer. A parent path can appear to match while no declared child path handles the requested URI. The documented example is a request for /static/fonts/bold.woff when the Ingress declares only child paths such as /static/css/ and /static/js/; the font request can return 404 because no child route covers it.
Declare every required subroute
- List the actual URL families used by the application, including fonts, images, uploads, and API paths.
- Declare a child path for each family rather than relying on a parent path alone.
- Keep the path type compatible between parent and child declarations.
- In the documented model, a
^~parent requires compatible^~subroutes.
After applying an Ingress change, inspect the generated NGINX configuration and test a representative URL from each child path. A working service and a correct parent path do not prove that every descendant URI is routed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use logs and a minimal request test
Validate before reloading
Run the configuration test before any reload:
nginx -t
Only reload after the test succeeds. If the active configuration differs from the file you edited, nginx -T will expose included fragments, duplicate servers, and the order in which locations are defined.
Read both logs
The access log confirms the request URI and status that NGINX recorded. The error log can show the path NGINX attempted to open, permission failures, internal redirects, or an upstream response. The NGINX Beginner’s Guide advises checking access.log and error.log when behavior is unexpected.
Correlate one request at a time:
- Run curl with the intended host, port, and exact URI.
- Capture the response status, redirect headers, and body.
- Find the matching access-log line.
- Read error-log entries at the same timestamp.
- Compare the calculated filesystem path or upstream target with what the log reports.
When an upstream application generates the 404, its response body, headers, or upstream timing often differs from NGINX’s local-file error. Confirm this before changing location precedence.
Choose the fix by symptom
| Observed situation | What to inspect first | Typical corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The edited block never appears to run | Host, listener, exact match, longest prefix, regex, and ^~ |
Correct the server selection or location precedence. |
| The file exists, but NGINX says 404 | URI-to-disk calculation, slash placement, case, and permissions | Correct root or alias mapping, or place the file at the calculated path. |
A URL ending in / fails |
Directory path and configured index filename |
Add or correctly name the index file, or configure an intentional fallback. |
| Only unknown application routes fail | Final try_files argument |
Replace =404 with the application URI or named upstream fallback. |
| Static files work but API routes return 404 | Whether a broad static location intercepts the API | Use proxy_pass or the appropriate application pass directive. |
| Ingress parent works but a descendant URI fails | Declared child paths and compatible path types | Add the missing subroute and regenerate the Ingress configuration. |
Worked troubleshooting examples
Example: the file is one directory higher than root expects
Suppose the configuration is:
location /assets/ {
root /var/www/site;
}
For /assets/app.css, NGINX tests /var/www/site/assets/app.css. If deployment placed the file at /var/www/site/app.css, choose an alias-style mapping that removes /assets/ from the disk path, or move the files into /var/www/site/assets/. Do not solve this by adding unrelated regex locations.

A browser request for /dashboard reaches:
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
There is no file named dashboard and no directory named dashboard, so the configured terminal action returns 404. If the application shell is /index.html, use that as the final URI and verify the shell exists under the selected root.
Example: an API route never reaches the backend
If location / contains a terminal 404 and the intended API block is absent or loses to another regex location, an API URL can die locally. Confirm the selected block with the effective configuration, create a dedicated location /api/ containing proxy_pass, and retest both a known API endpoint and a static asset.
Final diagnostic checklist
- Record the exact URI, including trailing slash, URL encoding, and letter case.
- Send the expected
Hostheader and use the correct HTTP or HTTPS listener. - Inspect
nginx -Tto identify the active server and every competing location. - Apply exact, longest-prefix, regex, and
^~precedence rules. - Calculate the full disk path produced by
rootor the alias-style mapping. - Check the file, directory, case, ownership, and parent-directory permissions.
- For a slash-terminated URI, verify the configured index file.
- Read every
try_filescandidate from left to right and identify its final action. - Use a real application fallback instead of
=404when the backend owns the route. - Keep static locations separate from proxied, FastCGI, uWSGI, or gRPC handlers.
- For Ingress, declare each required child path with a compatible path type.
- Run
nginx -t, reload safely, and correlate curl output with access and error logs.
Once these checks identify the stage that produced the 404, the fix is usually a precise configuration or deployment change rather than a trial-and-error rewrite of the entire server block.
