NGFWs: What They Can Improve—and What They Can’t Guarantee

Next-generation firewalls add application-aware inspection and controls beyond traditional address-and-port filtering. Their effectiveness depends on policy, configuration, deployment and broader security measures.

A next-generation firewall (NGFW) adds application-level awareness and deeper inspection to the address-, port- and connection-state rules of a traditional firewall. That can give security teams more precise controls and help enforce boundaries between network segments, but it does not guarantee that attacks will be stopped or make a network zero trust by itself. The practical result depends on policy quality, configuration, performance and how the firewall fits into the wider security program.

What is a next-generation firewall?

A traditional firewall can allow or block network traffic using information such as source and destination addresses, ports and connection state. An NGFW adds awareness of application data, enabling it to inspect traffic at Layer 7 as well as at the lower network layers.

NIST’s November 2022 Guide to a Secure Enterprise Network Landscape describes application data awareness as the distinguishing feature of an NGFW. It also identifies deep packet inspection (DPI), intrusion prevention (IPS) and, when configured, decryption and inspection of TLS-protected traffic as capabilities associated with NGFWs. Not every product or deployment necessarily provides every capability in the same way.

Firewall approach What rules can use What that means in practice
Traditional network firewall Network addresses, ports and connection state Controls traffic based on lower-layer network information.
Next-generation firewall Those same network details, plus application data and potentially threat, identity or device context Can make rules more specific than address-and-port matching alone, depending on enabled features and integrations.

How is an NGFW different from a traditional firewall?

Applications do not always use a single predictable port, and traffic using a familiar port is not necessarily trustworthy. Application identification can help a firewall distinguish what traffic is doing, rather than treating the port as a complete description. Administrators may then write rules around an application or its function, subject to the firewall’s recognition coverage and the organization’s policy.

DPI examines packet contents more deeply than basic packet filtering. IPS capabilities can inspect traffic for signs of known or suspicious attacks and take configured action. These controls add context and potential detection points, but their effectiveness depends on accurate policies, current detection content, configuration and the traffic the system can inspect.

What does a next-generation firewall do?

Identify and control applications

Application-aware rules can be more granular than rules that allow or deny traffic solely by port. A rule may permit an approved business application while restricting other activity, even when traffic shares common network paths. Application recognition is not infallible: its breadth, depth, handling of evasive traffic and update cadence are important evaluation questions. Check Point raises these criteria in its vendor-authored buyer guidance; they are considerations to assess, not independent proof of any product’s performance.

Apply threat-prevention controls

NGFW offerings may combine firewalling with IPS and additional security features. Check Point’s guide also suggests evaluating capabilities such as sandboxing, anti-phishing, antivirus, anti-bot, DNS security, threat intelligence and integrations. Those are vendor-identified features to check for; they should not be assumed to exist in every NGFW or to be enabled by default.

Help enforce network segmentation

Segmentation divides a network into areas with controlled traffic between them. The U.S. National Security Agency recommends using distributed NGFWs to restrict unapproved traffic and enforce access controls between approved network segments. Application-aware policies can make those boundaries more specific, while identity and device context may help determine which connections are appropriate.

That context matters: a network rule alone does not verify a user’s identity, confirm a device’s security posture or establish least privilege across an organization. NSA guidance pairs network enforcement with those broader controls rather than treating the firewall as a complete access model.

Where NGFWs can be deployed

NIST describes several deployment forms: dedicated physical appliances, firewall software running in cloud virtual machines, and cloud firewall services, often called firewall as a service (FWaaS). NIST’s zero-trust implementation project also documents physical, virtual, containerized and cloud-delivered firewall examples managed centrally. In those specific project builds, the firewalls serve as policy enforcement points for segmentation and user- or application-based controls; the examples are not a general endorsement or evidence that a firewall alone creates zero trust.

The deployment form affects where traffic is inspected and which team operates the control. An appliance may fit a data-center boundary, while a cloud service or virtual firewall may better match cloud workloads or distributed environments. The right choice depends on network architecture, traffic paths and operational responsibilities.

Why encrypted traffic makes inspection more complicated

TLS inspection can expose activity that would otherwise remain inside encrypted sessions, but decrypting traffic creates both technical and governance trade-offs. NIST’s September 2025 final publication, SP 1800-37, explains that TLS 1.3’s approach to forward secrecy may interfere with passive decryption methods enterprises use to inspect TLS 1.2 traffic. The publication documents standards-compliant approaches for maintaining TLS 1.3 visibility; it does not mean every existing passive inspection setup will continue working unchanged.

Decryption also creates a place where plaintext and key material may be exposed. NIST SP 1800-16 notes that this can introduce compliance implications and make the inspection point a valuable target. Some organizations may decide that the risks of decrypting particular traffic outweigh the visibility benefits and instead analyze traffic patterns.

Where inspection is used, plan deliberately for certificate and private-key handling, inspection scope and exclusions, access controls, logging and performance. These choices determine both what the firewall can see and the sensitivity of the data it processes.

What changes for security and network operations?

An NGFW can consolidate more decisions at a network enforcement point: administrators may manage application controls, intrusion prevention and segmentation policies through a shared system. That can improve visibility and consistency, but it also increases the importance of disciplined policy management. Rules need to reflect approved applications and trust boundaries, and teams need to understand how updates, exceptions and integrations affect enforcement.

Automation, orchestration, hybrid-cloud support and scale are reasonable topics to include in an evaluation. Check Point’s buyer guide highlights them as selection considerations, but it is vendor-authored guidance rather than neutral market testing. Operational fit also includes staff skills, support lifecycle, interoperability and the cost of running the chosen deployment.

How to evaluate an NGFW for your environment

  1. Map the traffic and boundaries. Identify the applications, network segments, cloud environments and traffic paths the firewall must cover. Decide where enforcement should occur and which team will manage it.
  2. Test application identification. Ask how broad and deep application recognition is, how evasive traffic is handled and how updates are maintained. Validate against applications and traffic representative of your environment.
  3. Evaluate threat controls and their impact. Determine which IPS and other security features are included, which are enabled, and what effect they have on capacity and latency when used together.
  4. Review encrypted-traffic handling. Ask how TLS 1.3 visibility works, how certificates and keys are protected, what traffic can be excluded, and how privacy and compliance requirements are addressed.
  5. Check identity, device and segmentation integration. Confirm what context the firewall can use and how that context is kept current. Define the access rules it should enforce between segments.
  6. Match the deployment to the architecture. Compare appliance, virtual-machine, container and cloud-service options against where traffic originates and where inspection is needed.
  7. Validate management and capacity. Review policy tools, APIs, automation, interoperability, support lifecycle and staff requirements. Request throughput and latency measurements with your intended security features enabled and your traffic mix represented, then validate in a representative environment.

NIST’s category-level guidance does not establish a current independent, apples-to-apples product ranking, and no universal winner or performance figure follows from the capabilities described here. Actual results depend on the deployment and the features enabled.

Does an NGFW create zero trust or stop every attack?

No. A firewall is one enforcement point in a broader security architecture. It can support least-privilege network access and segmentation, but zero trust also requires decisions based on identity, device posture and the access being requested. NIST’s implementation project shows firewalls used as part of specific zero-trust builds, not as a standalone substitute for the rest of that architecture.

Likewise, deeper inspection and integrated threat controls can strengthen defenses, but they cannot guarantee prevention of compromise. Their value depends on suitable policy, configuration, inspection coverage, system performance and coordination with the organization’s other security controls.
